Honor is linked to the virtues of sincerity and honesty, which translate into the exercise of truth before others and oneself. In turn, these virtues are indispensable to the dignity of the human person. It is not a question of culture, but of allowing oneself a new way of being and living. Without the burden of guilt, but with the commitment to the truth, which, being alive and in the process of learning, is modified by the expansion of consciousness and the capacity to love. This makes freedom possible. When we pledge our word, it is bad faith not to keep the commitment. We do not undo a commitment out of vanity or variation of mood. This reveals weakness of character. However, there may be a just and well-founded reason. It should be remembered that the word must be associated with truth. Truth is always linked to good, it is the conscious manifestation in favor of light. How to behave when a fact or a vision arises that modifies the understanding of that reality? Should we remain faithful to the word even if it is disloyal to truth and light? This would be like consciously allowing evil. Imagine a king condemning an alleged wrongdoer to be hanged. Remember that the word has the equivalent force to the pronouncement of a sentence in the sphere of the one who pronounces it. When the final hour arrives for the unhappy man to climb the scaffold and thus put an end to his days in this existence, an irrefutable fact emerges that proves the innocence of the condemned man. Should the king keep his word or go back on it? Is it wrong to back down in the face of a new truth? Is there dignity in keeping one's word even when the error it contains is discovered? Perceives that when the sentence was pronounced there was dignity in thinking that it carried the truth in its content. However, the truth was modified in the light of a new reality. Will there be dignity in keeping one's word in the face of conscious error? </div> <center></center> <center></center> <div class="text-justify"> <center>  </center> When I was a child I used to hear that "the word of a king cannot be reversed". Well, a king who does not have the necessary virtues to reverse a position, whatever it is, does not deserve to be lord of himself.. Keeping one's word, even in the face of new and life-changing things, is the stubbornness of atavistic and dark conditioning of pride and vanity. Demonstrates fear of the opinion of others in order to admit a mistake, to cope with the new or in relation to their freedom to think and be different. For centuries, primitive and malicious minds have distorted the meaning of the word as an instrument of good, imposing a false concept of honor, with the intention of manipulating the decisions of others for their selfish and often dark interests. We unconsciously absorb these vices. On the other hand, it is necessary to have humility and simplicity to look for the other person and reveal that the vision was modified, to recognize the deception, to apologize for what has happened, repair the damage that has been caused and continue in peace, because regardless of what they say, we must have compassion for those who were left unsatisfied. Peace is born of the perception of walking on the enlightened side of the Path. Then it, peace, will cease to be a transitory concession and will become a definitive conquest. Retracting in discourse, as long as it is to maintain the connection with the truth, is not dishonor, it is true dignity. It is an attitude of respect for the commitment made to oneself and to the light. Before the word that can commit me to someone, I have a primordial commitment to the light. If something changes in the period of time between the agreement and the execution, I will remain faithful to the truth, even if it leads me to break my word, even if I have to face insubordination, offenses, misunderstandings, provocations or slander. In this case, courage, patience and tolerance are necessary, as well as love, of course. </div> <center></center> <center></center> <div class="text-justify"> To be worthy is to live according to the truth. Indeed, we always have to be able to review our stances. In my view, there's a difference between making a promise (thus committing our word), and clinging to a posture. In the example you provide, for instance, the King's pledge is to serve justice, not to execute the condemned. If the condemned is proven innocent, it's justice to spare him. If the King couldn't backtrack on his decision, then he'd be failing his pledge. When I first came into contact with the Vedas, I was introduced to the concept of Dharma. A King once promised one of his concubines that he'd do anything for her when she asked. She decided to hold on to that pledge and later, seduced by a demon, she called upon it and forced the King to send his most beloved son to the Jungle (an expression of Hell in Hinduism). The King fell ill because it was wrong to send his son to the Jungle without having committed a crime, but the young man himself told him that it was worse to backtrack on his word, because then he'd be failing his Dharma. I now understand Dharma as Duty and Purpose, but in those days I was confused by how this situation indicated that doing right isn't always doing good or vice-versa. Nice post. I wonder, have you been in a position where you've had to retract your word even when you deemed your stance correct?

Right, in the post I explain a little more inside the subject, because it is ''normal'' to get confused, especially when we all have gone through that situation (and at once I answer you the question), I have gone through it many times and it has made me understand this subject a lot, especially in my political belief, because before I was not clear of my political ''belief'', I made decisions that I knew were bad, but I did it only because I ''promised'', and that weighs, stains, hinders or embitters. It is good to remember these differences of doing good or doing the right thing, when doing the right thing is not necessarily the best decision and vice versa. I remember back in the aughts when US media started calling John Kerry (who ran for president in 2004) a "flip flopper" because he had changed his position on the Iraq war and was now against it. Yeah, that's called learning more facts and changing your opinion based on information. It's the mature thing to say, look, I was wrong before and now I believe this based on this new information. It's immature to hold to your original position even in the face of new evidence that proves otherwise. It *floored* me that so many people didn't understand that. Exactly. Life has nuance and mitigating circumstances, things change, truth is revealed. If we could all perfectly know the perfect truth right away, we wouldn't have these problems. But we can't, so we always have to be open to new information that comes out later. It's like when a scientific discovery upended things people believed in religion, and people got deep in their denial about it. When I was a kid and still Catholic, I didn't feel that that faith was threatened by evolution. I just didn't think you could add up the bible and decide that the Earth was 6000 years old or that dinosaur bones were "a trick from satan" (yes, that's really a real thing an evangelical friend of mine was taught at her bible COLLEGE and she believed it). I felt like if your faith is so weak that it's threatened by knowledge and you can't wrap your head around both at the same time, your faith isn't very strong to begin with. You can see the evidence that the Earth is billions of years old and still believe in the Christian god. The bible is full of metaphors and parables but you're gonna insist Genesis is literally seven Earth days of 24 hours? That's silly.
