I have been reading the Steemit Statistics posts compiled by @arcange on a regular basis (and now it has been translated into different languages which is great), and the motivation for this post came from talking to some of the people on Steemit who feel like they don't really have much of a say in what goes on around here and that perhaps the distribution of wealth/power is on a tipping point where changes are required. Now if we think about the typical rules regarding the distribution of power/wealth using the 80/20 rule, you may expect that somewhere around 20% of the people probably holds about 80% of the power (or something like that). So I looked at one of the websites that tries to estimate the proportion of adults and the wealth that they represent: https://inequality.org/facts/income-inequality/ Here we are talking about less than 10% of the adults with over 80% of the wealth share in terms of their income, which as we know is rather disturbing and a sign of income equality across the globe. This prompted me to look a little bit more closely at the latest statistics to see what the numbers tell us about the distribution of voting power on Steemit looked like, and two of the graphs provided the key information: https://steemit.com/statistics/@arcange/steemit-statistics-20171111-en Based on the figures provided in these two charts I compiled the following table with some quick calculations: I will come back to the two figures that I calculated from this information, which is the species equivalent and whale equivalent values, but first let's just look at the distribution of accounts and voting power. What you can see visually is that each category of users are about one order of magnitude (roughly) less than the previous category (I used a log scale to make this easier to see), but the real difference in voting power is actually most significant between the Whales and everyone else: Take away the 'inactive' accounts (no posts, comments or upvotes for a certain period of time) and you have essential a three-tier society where the Minnows, Dolphins and Orcas make up the 'middle class': So let's come back to the 80/20 rule and see what the distribution of headcount and voting power looks like without the inactive accounts: Here is the percentage of each user category in the overall population: And the percentage of overall voting power represented by each category: And we thought the figures in the global income inequality was a cause for concern... here we are talking about 91% of the population holding 1% of the voting influence compared to 71% of the low income group holding 3% of the wealth. And on the other end of the scale, you have whales that make up less than 1% of the user accounts holding over 70% of the voting influence. Finally, to put all of this in perspective, let me get back to the original question in the post, and what the two values that I calculated means: The species equivalent value is the total voting power of the entire user category (I use the term species here very loosely) as a ratio of the average voting power of a single whale . So this means that all the voting power of the redfish added together is still only equal to half of the average voting power of a whale (and there are 42 of them out there swimming in the ocean). Luckily, the total voting power of all the minnows is equivalent to 2.5 whales, which means that they can potentially rise up as one against one unreasonable whale at least. The whale equivalent then, is the total number of users in a category required to reach the average voting power of one whale. Simply put, if you want to have the average voting influence of one whale then you only have to convince 150k redfish users (even though there are only around 70k of them) to hold a similar opinion, or 26 orca users. That would mean just to simply exert the same influence of a whale it requires both the 'lower class' of redfish users and at least one segment of the 'middle class' to hold the same view, or over 90% of the active users to agree on something, which is as close to a unanimous decision as you can get in modern society. Is this distribution of user category and voting influence cause for concern, and does it relate to the relative stability that we have seen in other types of organisation where a very large and disproportionate distribution of power keeps the rest of the population in check? I guess only time will tell... 'I am part of a Steemit Business Intelligence community. We all post under the tag #BIsteemit. The metric I would be concerned about is not current distibution, but the trend. It wouldn't make sense to me for Steem Power to be highly distributed right now in the early days. The important thing is that power is being distributed more widely over time as the network grows.

@demotruk - I agree, so it is important to define metrics that we can use to look at the trend over time. And also not to use metrics as an indicator of whether the system is 'fair' or not, but how much things have changed over defined periods of time.

We meet again @plushzilla, and I hope this is a good sign for our future collaborations! While you dig into the trend also please consider the speed of change; because there is an issue as to whether it is fast enough. More generally, thank you for an eye-opening post. I wish I had the time to show you another side of this 'not pretty' picture. It is a collection of payouts that are large and which make no sense unless you bring into scope the idea that some powerful people "love these gals/guys". Since I don't have the time give several examples (there is no shortage of them), I will leave you with two. A famous YouTuber arrived here and on his very first post, almost all of which was about introducing himself, he got $15,000+ SBDs as payment for content whose 'green quotient', on a scale of 0 to 10, was about 1! Second example: there are some of YouTubers with large YouTube followings, which means they're already getting paid by Google, and they bring their videos over here, adding little or no โgreenโ content, and yet they are consistently getting impressive payouts. As I said, not a pretty picture!

Please allow me to add the following relevant general comment, as a newbie here, having joined about six weeks ago. In support of this comment I wish to observe that I now have more than 300 posts or comments, and anyone looking at my comments will see that I consistently make an effort to put some 'green content' into my comments. A substantial part of my reading is in the area of issues upon which your post touches, and my general feeling right now (and "feeling" is the right word) is that Steemit is a wide open and welcoming society for free communications and helpful acquaintances; but it is a virtually closed society so far as the "SBD payout game" is concerned. My feeling is that those of us newbies who want to be happy at Steemit should ignore this game and look for other rewards in this society. I know this remark will make powerful people here angry; but here is why it is reasonable advice. The concentration and the main sources of great power are such that we are not going to get the powerful to walk away from their power any time soon. Thus, we minnows had better try to have fun at Steemit in ways that donโt involve paying attention to that game; because it so frustrating. Most interestingly, the marketing mantra that you most often see about Steemit is the following: "come for the rewards and stay for the company". I wonder if the person who composed this mantra realizes that it is a tacit admission that the reward system is broken. In a recent interview on YouTube our famous @Dan used the word "abused" in referring to the system.

this is a really good posts @plushzilla. What I like is the way you have mixed steemit data with external data. Keep up the good work. I think the distribution is not in steemit favor at the moment, but I have a few posts planned on it so I wont get into it here. Steem on :-)

I don't think Steemit is immune from the laws of economics and social behaviour, and if we are to try and avoid some of the issues that we seen as a result of the imbalance of power and inequality then we really need to start doing something soon. I look forward to your future posts to further enlighten us on this issue :)

I love your #bisteemit @paulag. Great post @plushzilla! It's the free market. Investors have the last word on the worth of Steem.

Great post. This shows clearly that something needs to be changed in the power distribution for Steemit to grow in the future. Would be interesting to see, if this distribution changed in the last year, or generally if indeed the growth of the user number can at all change the metrics (e.g. the whale equivalents), or if the mutual votings of whales to other whales posts further increases the relative SP concentration in the "fins" of few only. By the way, did the number of whales change over time or is it rather constant? Did some Steemians become whales or did more whales powered down to orcas?

@stayoutoftherz - I think something that was lacking in my post is a comparison of the current distribution against historical data, as you and others have suggested. Perhaps the trend is in the right direction and my snapshot only captures a point in time when the balance is still shifting. But I like the fact that we are making use of the information available to us to question and consider answers for making decisions for the future, and that has to be a good thing :)
