I had come with my friend Carla to the town of San Lázaro, located in the Andean mountains, to participate in a spiritual retreat where we spent a week away from the outside world to concentrate on our inner peace. I needed it after what happened in the hospital where I worked. I just wanted to forget those memories that I could not get out of my mind. 

On Sunday, the spiritual guides proposed us to choose between two activities: to walk through the Orama forest or to enjoy the nice hot springs wells that were inside the facilities of the big retreat house.

 I wanted to go to the wells to relax my body, and I imagined myself floating in those green and sulfur-smelling waters. 

"We'd better go walk through the forest; it must be exciting. Come on, Rebeca, come with me; it will do you good" 

"Well, I'm going to please you, Carla" 

 "Let's join the retreat group in the living room, and from there we'll leave."

We arrived at the forest, and, as we walked along the paths among the tall trees, four people joined us. I don't know why I felt uncomfortable. 

"And who are they?" 

Carla looked at them. "They look like a family. I think it's the mom and dad with their kids."

I looked at them, this time more closely; they had passed us and were in front of the group. 

The man had a brown hat that covered half of his face and a leather bag that he carried across his back. The woman was dressed in a long blue skirt and knee-high black leather boots. Her hair was long and reddish. The children were the strangest. The male was about twelve years old, with shoulder-length straight hair. He wore a long-sleeved plaid shirt and also wore boots and a hat, and every so often he would turn and look at me with a smile on his freckled face. The slightly older girl was tall and thin, with long black hair, and was wearing a long skirt and, over her white shirt, a green shawl. She was hopping and pulling on the branches of the plants all along the trail.

 The guide was pointing out the beauties of the forest, which was getting thicker and darker. The tops of the big trees did not let the sunlight through, giving the impression that it was getting dark. 

"Carla, what time does your watch have? Mine stopped"

"It's only 10 o'clock in the morning, but it's very dark, don't you think so, Rebeca?"

"Yes, that's why I asked you. And now that family is ahead, and we're following them. I don't see the guide. I don't like this, Carla. And the others don't say anything. Doesn't it seem strange to you?"

 "It doesn't seem so. Let's ask them."

 We approached a couple we met at the retreat. And I asked them "Do you know why we follow these people? And I point to the family: and where is the guide?"

"We don't know, but I think you do, the woman replied."

 That answer left me very intrigued. Why should I know? 

The trail began to ascend, and the sound of birdsong could be heard. It was a long, high-pitched sound that got into my ears. As we climbed, I realized that, like the guide, some people had disappeared. 

It must be that these people had gone other ways. The truth is that I was very disoriented, and my friend Carla seemed indifferent to what was happening. 

We arrived at a waterfall whose waters falling on the stones produced a great noise, and when I turned to the sides, I realized that there was no one there. I was alone. 

"Carla, Carla."

The echo answered me 

"Carlaaaaa" 

Behind the waterfall I could see the family saying goodbye to me and then vanishing. And at that moment I understood. 

They were the people who had been admitted to the hospital on my night on call. They were coming from a party in their village, and the car had gone off the road. The father, mother, and child had arrived dead; the boy had survived the accident. I was able to talk to him; his clear eyes looked at me, and very calmly he said, "I will be fine", but I could not save him. 

I sat down on a rock and started to cry. The tears ran down my cheeks, and I felt as if all the sadness that I had repressed in my heart was being emptied. And as I cried, I listened to the wind through the branches and then the air rushing in and out of my lungs as I took a deep breath. 

I came back to my consciousness as I heard the soft voice of the guide telling us. Feel your hands, your feet, and little by little your whole body, and when you are ready, slowly open your eyes. 

I opened my eyes and looked at Carla next to me and all the participans. Their faces, like mine, conveyed a great peace.  

Carla and I stayed a few more days enjoying the nature that surrounded the place, and as we walked through the forest, the strangest thing that happened to us was that we had the feeling that we knew it, that we had already walked these paths.

Había llegado en compañía de mi amiga Carla  a la población de  San Lázaro, ubicada  en las montañas andinas, para  participar en un retiro espiritual donde durante una semana nos alejamos del mundo exterior para concentrarnos en nuestra paz interior. Lo necesitaba después de lo ocurrido en el hospital  donde trabajaba. Solo quería olvidar esos recuerdos que no podía sacar de mi mente.

El domingo, los  guías espirituales nos propusieron escoger entre dos actividades: recorrer el bosque de Orama o disfrutar de los agradables pozos de aguas termales que estaban dentro de las instalaciones de la gran casa de retiro.

Yo quería ir a los pozos para  relajar mi cuerpo y me imaginaba flotando en esas aguas verdes y olorosas a azufre.

—Mejor vamos a recorrer el bosque, debe ser emocionante. Anda, Rebeca, acompáñame, te va a hacer bien.

—Bueno, te voy a complacer, Carla.  

 —Vamos a unirnos  al grupo del retiro en el salón y de allí partiremos.

Llegamos al bosque y, mientras caminamos por los senderos entre los altos árboles, se nos unieron cuatro personas. No sé por qué me sentí incómoda.

 — ¿Y esos quiénes serán?

Carla los miró. —  ñParecen una familia.  Creo que son la mamá y el papá,  con sus dos hijos.

Los miré, esta vez con más detenimiento, nos habían adelantado e iban enfrente del grupo.

El hombre tenía un sombrero marrón que le tapaba la mitad de la cara y un bolso de cuero que lo llevaba cruzado por la espalda. La mujer iba vestida con una falda larga de color azul  y botas de cuero negro hasta las rodillas. Su cabello era largo y de color rojizo. Los niños eran los más extraños. El varón tendría como doce años, con el cabello liso hasta los hombros. Llevaba una camisa de manga larga de cuadros y también llevaba botas y sombrero y cada cierto tiempo volteaba y me miraba con una sonrisa en su cara pecosa. La niña un poco mayor era alta y delgada, con el cabello largo y negro y llevaba puesta una falda larga y sobre la camisa blanca un chal de color verde. Iba brincando y tirando de las ramas de las plantas por todo el sendero.

El guía nos iba señalando las bellezas del bosque, que cada vez se fue haciendo más denso y oscuro. Las copas de los grandes árboles no dejaban pasar la luz del sol, daba la impresión de que estaba atardeciendo.

 —Carla, ¿qué hora tiene tu reloj? El mío se detuvo.

 —Son apenas las 10 de la mañana, pero está muy oscuro. ¿No te parece, Rebeca?

 —Sí, por eso te pregunté. Y ahora esa familia va adelante y los estamos siguiendo. No veo al guía. Esto no me gusta, Carla.  Y los demás no dicen nada. ¿No les parece extraño?

—Parece que no. Vamos a preguntarles.

Nos acercamos a una pareja que conocimos en el retiro. Y les pregunté

 —¿Saben por qué seguimos a esas personas? Y señalo a la familia: ¿y dónde está el guía?

—No lo sabemos, pero yo creo que tú sí sabes,  —me respondió la mujer.

Esa respuesta me dejó muy intrigada. ¿Por qué tenía que saberlo?

El sendero comenzó a ascender y se escuchó el canto de unos pájaros. Era un sonido largo y agudo que se me metió en los oídos. Mientras subíamos, me di cuenta de que, al igual que el guía, algunas personas habían desaparecido. 

Será que esas personas se fueron por otros caminos. La verdad es que estaba muy desorientada y mi amiga Carla parecía indiferente a lo que estaba ocurriendo. 

Llegamos a una cascada cuyas aguas al caer sobre las piedras producían un gran ruido y al voltear a los lados me di cuenta de que no había nadie. Estaba sola. 

—Carla, Carla. 

Me respondió el eco 

"Carlaaaaa" 

Detrás de la caída de agua pude ver a la familia despidiéndose de mí y luego desvanecerse. Y en ese momento lo comprendí todo.

Eran las personas que habían ingresado al hospital en mi noche de guardia. Venían de una fiesta en su pueblo y el carro se había salido de la carretera.  El padre, la madre y la niña habían llegado muertos, el niño había sobrevivido al accidente. Pude hablar con él, sus ojos claros me miraron y con mucha calma me dijo: *voy a estar bien*,  pero no pude salvarlo. 

Me senté sobre una roca y comencé a llorar.  Las lágrimas corrían por mis mejillas y sentí como si se estuviera vaciando toda la tristeza que tenía reprimida en mi corazón. Y mientras lloraba, escuchaba el viento entre las ramas y luego el aire que entraba y salía de mis pulmones mientras respiraba profundamente. 

Volví a mi conciencia al escuchar la voz suave de la guía que nos decía.  —Sientan sus manos, sus pies y poco a poco todo su cuerpo, y cuando estén listos, abran lentamente los ojos. 

Abrí los ojos  y miré a Carla que estaba a mi lado y a todas los participantes del retiro. Sus rostros, al igual que el mío, transmitían una gran paz.  

Carla y yo nos quedamos unos días mas disfrutando de la naturaleza que rodeaba el lugar y al pasear por el  bosque,  lo mas extraño que nos sucedio,  es que teniamos la sensación de conocerlo, de que ya habíamos caminado por estos senderos.
