I wish it was easier to spend steem. I think the problem is that it is on so few exchanges (and the wallet on Poloniex gets regularly disabled).

Very good and very well written article. I can agree with you that Steem blockchain is (though I wouldn't say perfect) very good and quite well thought through system that *"combines the powers of inflation and network effect to grow the economic value of itself and of those who have their stake."* 

But I can't agree with you about some other things as they are simply not the actual facts.
For instance, *"Steem is"* ***NOT*** *"inflation based currency with 10% for first year, 9.5% for second year, 9% for third year and so on."* 

Although Steem is inflation based currency the inflation rates are NOT determined by the number of years passed but **by the number of new blocks occurrence** ***(or being produced).*** 
In other words, and starting with the hard fork 16 in December 2016 (as before that the inflation rate was 160% per year - huge difference) **yearly inflation rate has been set to starting 9.5% which number is decreased by 0.01% after every 250,000 new blocks being produced** ***(created).*** 

According to [Steem White Paper](https://steem.io/SteemWhitePaper.pdf) the expectations were it would happen at the frequency that would create an estimate rate decrease of about 0.5% per year. But it doesn't have to be so. We can experience less than 12,500,000 blocks (50 x  250,000) being created per year same as much more.

There is also another aspect of inflation or maybe better to say **another way how the inflation is handled on the Steem blockchain,** which aspect you entirely forgot, neglected or maybe didn't know about it.

The thing is that each newly created block creates one new Steem token. From one day to another, accumulated total is divided in the following way. 
- 10% goes to Witnesses as the payment for their work for powering the blockchain
- 15% goes to SP holders (equally split among the members according to the each member's SP holding amount) and 
- **75% creates the Reward Pool** 

The actual available amount in the Reward Pool you may see the easiest on [Steem Supply website](http://steem.supply) displayed as ***"Total rewards fund."***
*(At the time I'm typing this, the available total for the rest of the day is 740,845 STEEM and as time goes by it would be lower down for each, in the meantime, given vote.)* 

Furthermore, the new available total for tomorrow will be created at the end of the day when the newly created tokens (so far we have them 14,365 for today), after made payments to witnesses and SP holders, will be added to the Reward Pool. 

With this, we arrived at the...

...where I can somewhat agree with you that maybe *"large steem holders should stay away from taking rewards through authoring"* **but I can't agree with you that they should also stay away from curation!** 

The reason "why" is plain and simple as from my point of view, the large steem holders (each according to its SP amount) **are,** in fact, **the only ones who may more significantly pool out the bigger amounts from the Reward Pool and divide it among bigger number of members, exactly and almost only** (except if you expect to receive some donation) **through curation** ***(voting)!*** 

And if you maybe fear that way the Reward Pool might be drained sooner than later, you don't have to be (especially if the votes are going to be spread wisely) as it would only increase the Steem blockchain activity (firstly from rewarded members that would be able to spread it more on other members with some positive 'butterfly effect'), and which activity would then result again with more new blocks (tokens) created.
