¡Hola querida comunidad del anime y manga! 

En el post de hoy, les quiero compartir un experimento que estoy haciendo con uno de los OCs de mi manga "Ángel Guardián": animando a Gersiel.

Gersiel fue un ángel guardián y un guerrero de élite quien, luego de completar su etapa como ángel guardián, fue asignado como maestro de muchas generaciones de ángeles.   Nadie sabe en realidad cuántos años tiene él, pero se dice que tiene más de 500 años en el cielo.

Cuando su tiempo como maestro había culminado y estaba listo para su ascenso, se le asignó un último estudiante:  Kyrsiel.  Una vez que su estudiante cumpliera su entrenamiento, sería ascendido de inmediato.

A Gersiel no le gustó mucho al inicio este cambio en su proceso de evolución, pero luego de pensarlo, llegó a la conclusión que no era realmente mucho lo que debía esperar, ya que su alumno debía cumplir su entrenamiento dentro de cuatro años, que es lo que generalmente se tomaba el completar todo el proceso.

Muy lejos estaba en ese entonces Gersiel de sospechar que el proceso se extendería por quince años, ya que Kyrsiel era por muy lejos lo que se podría esperar de un ángel: era indisciplinado, flojo y nunca se tomaba en serio los entrenamientos.  En la práctica final, Kyrsiel falló en cuidar a su protegido humano, por lo que, se le dio una nueva oportunidad en proteger a una joven a quien los demonios estaban acechando sin aparente razón.

Si Kyrsiel supera la prueba, ganará sus alas y Gersiel podrá continuar su ascenso, si falla, deberá repetir nuevamente todo el entrenamiento, lo cual serán más años de demora en el proceso de Gersiel.

Gersiel suele ser bastante reservado y callado, sólo Kyrsiel logra hacerle perder la paciencia.  Es un guerrero a quienes los demonios temen y odian y sus compañeros ángelicales admiran.

Así que, tomando en cuenta la personalidad de Gersiel, quise hacer un pequeño clip de animación donde pudiera reflejar un poco su lenguaje corporal.  Este clip está compuesto de tres tomas que estarían intercaladas con otras dos escenas que aún estoy trabajando.

Lo primero que hice fue el boceto para definir los movimientos, decidir las partes móviles y las que quedarían fijas en la animación y sobre todo, trabajar la parte que me resultó más retadora: las alas.  Mantener el volumen y tamaño con el movimiento fue algo que me llevó más tiempo que incluso la soltura del cabello.

Tomé inspiración del anime Gaiking, ya que los Hombres Aves tenían diseños bastante sencillos pero funcionales para las alas.  El anime retro me ha sido de mucha ayuda para entender e interpretar este tipo de situaciones.

Una vez definido el boceto y los ajustes necesarios, pasé al clean up.  Quise intentar un lineart al estilo más moderno: líneas delgadas y con un tono oscuro sin llegar al color negro absoluto.  Quería ver qué tal se vería así, aun cuando tengo mucha influencia del anime retro de los 70´s, 80´s y 90´s.

Al momento de realizar el color, experimenté con los colores planos sin sombras.  La paleta de colores original de "Ángel Guardián" son colores más saturados y brillantes.  Quise probar con tonos con menos saturación y más opacidad como suele usarse en muchos animes actuales.

Agregué el fondo y este fue el resultado final:

No puedo decir que quedé cien por ciento satisfecha con el resultado.  Siempre me ha parecido que visualmente los linearts tan suaves y delgados combinados con las paletas de tonos con menos saturación le resta ese "algo" propio del anime tradicional y al experimentar con esto, pude confirmarlo en mi opinión.

Trabajé este clip de animación con Clip Studio Pro.  No sé si luego intente pasar estas escenas a Tahoma 2D para ver la diferencia con un lineart más definido.  Por lo pronto, terminaré los dos clips faltantes para completar toda la secuencia y poder compartirlo con ustedes.

Hello dear anime and manga community!

In today’s post, I want to share an experiment I’m doing with one of the OCs from my manga “Guardian Angel”: animating Gersiel.

Gersiel was once a guardian angel and an elite warrior who, after completing his term as a guardian, was assigned as a teacher for many generations of angels. No one really knows how many years he’s been around, but it’s said he’s spent over 500 years in heaven.

When his time as a teacher ended and he was ready for his own ascension, he was given one last student: Kyrsiel. Once his student completed training, he would ascend immediately.

Gersiel didn’t like this change in his evolution process at first, but after thinking it over, he concluded that it wasn’t much of a wait since his pupil was supposed to finish training in four years, which is the usual time frame.

Gersiel could not have guessed back then that the process would stretch to fifteen years, since Kyrsiel was, by far, the least angelic of an angel: undisciplined, lazy, and never taking training seriously. In the final practical exam, Kyrsiel failed to protect his human charge, so he was given a new opportunity guarding a young woman whom demons were stalking for no apparent reason.

If Kyrsiel passes this test, he will earn his wings and Gersiel can continue his ascension. If he fails, he must repeat all the training, which means more years of delay for Gersiel’s process.

Gersiel is usually very reserved and silent, only Kyrsiel can make him lose his patience. He’s a warrior feared and hated by demons and admired by his fellow angels.

With Gersiel’s personality in mind, I wanted to make a short animation clip to reflect a bit of his body language. This clip consists of three shots that will be intercut with two other scenes I’m still working on.

The first thing I did was the sketch to define the movements, decide which parts would move and which would stay fixed, and especially tackle what I found most challenging: the wings. Keeping their volume and size consistent in motion took me even more time than animating loose hair.

I took inspiration from the anime Gaiking, since the Bird Men had simple yet functional wing designs. Retro anime has greatly helped me understand and interpret these kinds of situations.

Once the sketch and necessary adjustments were defined, I moved on to clean-up. I tried a more modern line art style: thin lines in a dark tone, but not pure black. I wanted to see how it would look, even though I’m heavily influenced by ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s retro anime.

When coloring, I experimented with flat colors without shadows. The original “Guardian Angel” palette uses more saturated, brighter colors. I wanted to try less-saturated, more opaque tones like those used in many current anime.

I added the background, and this was the final result:

I can’t say I’m 100% satisfied with it. I’ve always felt that very smooth, thin line art combined with lower-saturation palettes lacks that special something of traditional anime, and experimenting confirmed that, in my opinion.

I worked on this animation clip with Clip Studio Pro. I’m not sure if I’ll later try moving these scenes into Tahoma2D to see the difference with more defined line art. For now, I’ll finish the two remaining clips to complete the sequence and share it with you.
