As you know, elbow strike is one of the most effective strikes in a close range. When you hit with an elbow, this is going to be painful for the attacker. You can use your elbow not only to strike but also to block.

You have to consider the distance when you make your move to defend yourself. The attacker cannot hit you by a punch or kick from distance. In a close range, things can happen pretty fast. You are defending one strike and the attacker can instantly hit you with another hand. You will find blocking with elbow very useful.

When you block and parry, you might expose some part of your body. If you are not aware of that, the attacker can take advantage of that moment to make his move. So your hands need to be in the proper position in order to prevent the strikes.

Let's talk about what you just watched in the video. To do block with an elbow strike, you raise your elbow up that also exposes your front part of the body. Your other hand should be up and in front of you so that you can defend any strike.

You can find this block useful when the strike comes to the side. If it is a straight punch, it is better not to use the elbow as a block. You can do outside parry or palm slap parry to defend that. 

You have to be fast to block with an elbow. If you are not fast enough, it might not work for you. It is highly effective in close range. As soon as you block any strike, counter-attack immediately.
