Si leíste los libros o incluso si solo viste las películas basadas en las novelas de Harry Potter escritas por JK Rowling sabrás muy bien que las varitas poseen características muy marcadas que se nos mencionan a lo largo del relato y las películas como por ejemplo; longitud o flexibilidad. También está la capacidad innata de elegir a su portador entre otras cosas.

#### Cuasisensibilidad;
Aunque los magos y brujas pueden canalizar su poder en casi cualquier cosa Ollivander nos indica que el poder del mago ve su máximo esplendor con el artefacto indicado, en este caso la varita indicada. Como ya sabemos la varita es la que elige al mago, pero esto no significa que un mago no podrá ejecutar magia sino posee su propia varita, solo que quizás esta magia no sea lo suficientemente poderosa o efectiva.
Aunque no poseen una capacidad probada de pensamiento las varitas pueden realizar cosas por si mismas, incluso proteger a su portador del peligro aun este no lo requiera o no lo haya advertido. Cuando se sienten afines a un mago o bruja algunas incluso lo expresan emitiendo luz o algún tipo de suave melodía.

La longitud de una varita puede estar un poco relacionada con la estatura y proporción física del mago como es el caso de Dolores Umbridge cuya varita es inusualmente corta o de Hagrid cuya varita es notablemente más larga de lo normal.

Este es un concepto bastante dominado; la rigidez no es más que la predisposición de la varita a cambiar de dueño y adaptarse a la magia del portador que la lleve. Aunque este concepto también se usa en ocasiones para referirse al tipo de madera del que está hecha la varita.
Las varitas pueden cambiar de dueño si su anterior portador es desarmado o asesinado en combate sin embargo esto es muy poco usual, una varita no aceptará fácilmente a otro mago que no sea el que esta haya escogido. Este fenómeno puede verse más notablemente en la varita de Saúco cuya lealtad es bastante cambiante, siempre prefiriendo la mano del mago vencedor de su antiguo portador lo cual en mi opinión dice mucho de la naturaleza de la varita, una naturaleza ambiciosa y hambrienta de poder, pues es esta cualidad la que más valora dicha varita, ella solo valora y respeta el poder, nada más.
Por lo demás y a diferencia de lo que se cree, las varitas no cambiaran tan fácilmente de lealtad entre magos y brujas, sin embargo hay varitas un poco más propensas hacerlo que otras, esta suele ser una confusión muy usual si solamente viste las películas, pero tranqui que ya lo sabes por si alguien te pregunta.

La magia sin varitas no es una práctica común en Gran Bretaña, es impredecible y muy peligrosa, solo puede ser ejecutada con magos de una increíble habilidad y destreza. De lo contrario puede causar graves accidentes en incluso la muerte de quien al usa.
Albus Dumblendore, así como Voldemort y Alastor Moody eran practicantes de esta forma de hacer magia y aun así preferían el uso de sus respectivas varitas; se sabe que el mismo Merlín era capaz de ejecutar magia solamente con la mente o los gestos de su rostro, sin necesidad de usar las manos. Son varitas hermanas cuando comparten el mismo núcleo mágico del mismo espécimen o animal mágico que les dio forma.
Un ejemplo bastante conocido es la varita de Harry y la de Voldemort las cuales poseen un núcleo de pluma de cola de fénix, pero ambas plumas pertenecen al mismo fénix. Esto es algo que no suele pasar con naturalidad y es extremadamente raro.
Cuando dos varitas hermanas se baten en duelo sus dueños pueden herirse mas no asesinarse y esto es porque las varitas se niegan hacerse daño mutuamente, a este extraño fenómeno se le conoce como Priori Incantatem.
