Dapper Labs Is At It Again With Their TopShot NFT Platform

Do you remember CryptoKitties from back in 2017? CryptoKitties were virtual kittens or the digital version of Pokemon cards which clogged up the Ethereum blockchain. It was an early glimpse into the world of NFTs. Back in 2017 over $1 million in transactions were completed or the virtual cats. One cat even sold for over $100k.

The company behind CrytoKitties was Dapper Labs. The company now has another project that once again is taking the crypto space for a spin and it’s called NBA TopShot.

The momentum behind cryptocurrency-based digital collectibles continues to build as the NFT market posts its best month yet—with tradeable “moments” platform NBA Top Shot leading the way.

The top three NFT marketplaces saw a combined trading volume of $342 million in February as interest in digital collectables continues to rise among everyday users and high profile celebrities, according to Dapp Radar’s February 2021 Industry Report.

NBA TopShot, offering basketball-themed collectibles officially licensed by the NBA, is the reigning champion among NFT marketplaces to date. According to Dapp Radar, NBA Top Shot captured more than 65% of the total NFT market volume in February, worth more than $225 million.

You even got NBA players themselves investing in the space as Aaron Gordon, Andre Iguodala, JaVale McGee and Spencer Dinwiddie have all invested in Dapper Labs.

It appears everyone wants in...I'm even trying to convince my 12 year old daughter to put her art into NFTs.

I don't really get unknowns trying to flog their 5 minute photoshops as NFTs, but officially licensed, virtual NBA cards I'm all over.

The NBA certainly knows what it's doing here.

I wasn't aware that the players themselves were involved. It seems like a promising idea but I hope the novelty of it doesn't wear off too fast, that's my fear about NFT's.

Yeah, it is crazy to realize these are the same people as the ones that created Cryptokitties, they must have some seriously talented minds in their team to pull off another success like this. I wonder how long the hype will last, right now there are still way more people that want a pack of every new drop that comes out, the last one was over 200k packs (at 14usd) and tonight a rare pack drop (priced at 199usd), I am actually considering to buy this one, even though I was already into the project in December when you could just buy as many packs as you wanted, but thought to myself why would anyone ever pay over 10 USD for a pack and I only bought one base series one pack (still grateful I did). I do like think they did an amazing job keeping the blockchain part completely in the background, I think the regular customer has no idea what a blockchain actually is and I am thinking that is a very bullish sign for mass adoption.
