Wednesday Walking To the Black River

For today's walk, I ventured to a place I've not visited before; a minor trail at a dead-end road that leads to the local Black River.

This area used to be part of what was known as "Tent City."  There were a number of large, obsolete cement culverts back along this stretch of the river; I believe they belonged to the city but had over time been converted to living spaces.  A large portion of the homeless folks resided here, undisturbed for the most part until the City decided to rezone the area and force the population to leave.

You can see the mounds of fill in the background above; once the home of a large Mobile petroleum refinery, then the culvert graveyard/homestead, and now currently in the process to become a greenzone/art zone/residence area for the city's population. Quite the history and future...all that said, I wanted to check out the shoreline and see the river on this grey, rainy day.

What did I find?

For starters, more puffball mushrooms, no less!

I also found an old storm sewage discharge; the masonry on the unit appeared a bit older.

There was also quite a bit of debris on the shoreline.  Lots of garbage, but also tons of discarded bricks.  If I knew what to do with them, I apparently have an endless supply of them...

With the shoreline scattered with debris, as seen below:

It is no doubt prime waterfront property with a view!

Such an interesting place, yet again. The area has around 140,000 people in total...I bet less than 1% of the group even knows this place exists, let alone have taken the time to visit it.  Tucked near the back of an industrial park, this trail and "beach" are definitely out of the way for most folks; unforgettable to most, but I was happy to document it.

These are most favorite types of places to visit...those that most don't find worthwhile to seek out and explore.  I wasn't sure what to find, but I appreciated every bit of the experience.
