I'm back with a new DIY project, and this time it's another piece of furniture I found on the street. I had just stepped out for a few minutes around my neighborhood when I came across this little table in front of a neighbor's house — they were moving out. Actually, it’s a kid’s vanity table, and as you can probably tell, it was in pretty bad shape. It was damaged both from poor maintenance and also because the material was really low quality — cheap MDF. But even so, I felt like it had potential. I thought I could bring it back to life and make it look nice again.

Na verdade, é uma penteadeira infantil — e, como dá pra ver, ela estava bem detonada. Além da má conservação, o material também era bem frágil, um MDF de qualidade bem baixa. Mesmo assim, achei que valia a pena tentar recuperar. Acredito que ainda dava pra salvar e dar uma nova vida pra essa peça, deixando ela mais bonita e funcional.

So I brought the table home and started brainstorming ways to fix it up. The first thing I needed was a new tabletop. Some people suggested using glass to keep the vanity function, but honestly, that wouldn't make sense in my home — it just wouldn’t be practical. Instead, I used a simple piece of plywood I already had lying around. The goal was to spend as little as possible on this project.

Once the new top was nailed in place, it was time to paint. I originally wanted a slightly different shade of green, but again — I didn’t want to buy new paint. I decided to use what I had: some white paint and a few pigments. I mixed them to come up with a shade that looked nice. It wasn’t exactly what I had pictured, but I ended up loving the result — it turned out fun, cheerful, and it matched the vibe of my house, which already has a lot of colorful furniture.

> Resolvi trazer a mesinha pra casa e comecei a pensar nas possibilidades de reforma. A primeira coisa que fiz foi providenciar um novo tampo. Algumas pessoas até sugeriram usar vidro pra manter a função original de penteadeira, mas aqui em casa isso não faria sentido, pois não seria útil pra mim desse jeito. Então, usei um pedaço de compensado bem simples, que eu já tinha guardado. A ideia era justamente gastar o mínimo possível nesse projeto.

> Depois de fixar o novo tampo com pregos, chegou a hora de pintar. A minha intenção inicial era usar um tom de verde diferente do que acabou saindo, mas como eu não queria comprar tinta nova, resolvi aproveitar o que já tinha em casa. Usei uma tinta branca base e misturei com alguns pigmentos até chegar em uma cor que me agradasse. Não ficou exatamente como eu imaginei no começo, mas achei o resultado bonito, alegre, divertido, e combinou com o estilo da minha casa, que já é cheia de móveis coloridos.

I should mention — sorry! — I don’t have great photos of all the steps. I mostly filmed the process instead of taking pictures, so a lot of the images I have are screenshots from the videos, and the quality isn't the best.

About an hour after painting, the paint was fully dry and I still had to deal with the tabletop. I could’ve painted that too, but I thought it would be more interesting to stick on a wood-look adhesive. Honestly, I just felt like trying something different. I had ordered the adhesive online — it looked beautiful on the website, kind of like freijó wood — but when it arrived, it didn’t look quite as nice in person. I was a little disappointed with the quality, but I decided to use it anyway. I mean, for a piece that came from the trash, anything was already an upgrade.

I applied the adhesive, and to my surprise, it was really easy to do. I finished the edges and still felt like the piece needed a personal touch to really reflect my style. That’s when I remembered a heart-shaped drawer pull I had been saving for just the right moment — and this was it.

> Cerca de uma hora depois da pintura, a tinta já estava completamente seca. Ainda faltava dar um acabamento no tampo. Eu poderia ter pintado também, mas achei que seria mais interessante aplicar um adesivo que imita madeira. Foi uma decisão meio no impulso, confesso. Comprei esse adesivo online e no site ele parecia lindo, com um visual de madeira freijó. Mas, quando chegou, me decepcionei um pouco com a qualidade. Mesmo assim, resolvi usar. Afinal, pra uma mesinha que veio do lixo, qualquer melhoria já fazia diferença.

> Colei o adesivo e, pra minha surpresa, foi bem tranquilo de aplicar. Fiz os acabamentos e ainda faltava um toque final pra deixar a peça com mais personalidade. Aí lembrei de um puxador em formato de coração que eu já tinha guardado há um tempo, esperando a ocasião certa. Era agora.

In the end, I think the little table turned out super cute! For now, it’s sitting in this little corner of the house because we don’t have much space at the moment. But I’m happy to have it here. More than anything, I hope this inspires you to give new life to old furniture — even stuff you find on the street.
