I had never been to this area southwest of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, so I was curious to see what I would find. My guideline was mainly to photograph the oldest spots to illustrate a historical publication I was working on. >*No había estado nunca por esta zona del suroeste de Caracas, la capital de Venezuela, así que sentía curiosidad por ver con qué me iba a encontrar. Mi pauta era sobre todo fotografiar los puntos más antiguos para ilustrar una publicación de corte histórico en la que estaba trabajando.* <center></center> Together with the people of the community who accompanied me, we started the tour along the main avenue of Macarao, where the facilities of the Fire Department of the Capital District are located, there was quite a lot of movement around this important institution. >*Junto a la gente de la comunidad que me acompañó, empezamos el recorrido por la avenida principal de Macarao, donde están las instalaciones del Cuartel de los Bomberos del Distrito Capital, había bastante movimiento en los alrededores de esta importante institución.* <center></center> Nearby there is a square with a playground and several recently constructed buildings made by the Misión Vivienda (Housing Mission), a government plan that provides low-cost houses or apartments for the population. >*Cerca hay una plaza con parque infantil y varios edificios de reciente construcción hechos por la Misión Vivienda, un plan gubernamental que entrega casas o apartamentos a bajo costo para la población.* <center></center> Macarao was founded a little more than four centuries ago (1620) and with its 131.4 km2 is the largest parish of the 22 that are part of the Libertador municipality of the Capital District. Its name comes from the cacique of the Toromaimas tribe, who had this area under their dominion before the Spanish colonization. >*Macarao tiene poco más de cuatro siglos de fundada (1620) y con sus 131,4 Km2 es la parroquia más grande de las 22 que forman parte del municipio Libertador del Distrito Capital. Su nombre proviene del cacique de la tribu de los Toromaimas, quienes tenían bajo su dominio esta zona antes de la colonización española.* <center></center> As in any other town in Venezuela, here there is also a Bolivar square and in front of it a church. Built in 1740, this is the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Curucay. >*Como en cualquier otro pueblo de Venezuela, aquí también hay una plaza Bolívar y al frente una iglesia. Construida en 1740, esta es la Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Curucay.* <center></center> Walking through the central part of Macarao, I was told which were the oldest streets and houses, many of them no longer seem so old because they have been intervened over the years but there are others that are. >*Caminando por la parte central de Macarao, me indicaron cuáles eran las calles y casas más viejas, muchas de ellas ya no lo parecen tanto porque han sido intervenidas a lo largo de los años pero hay otras que sí.* <center></center> For example this one I show below I was told it is one of the oldest houses still standing here. Being on the outskirts of Caracas and having a lot of fertile soil, Macarao was until well into the twentieth century a purely agricultural area, providing vegetables and fruits for the people of the capital. >*Por ejemplo esta que muestro a continuación me dijeron que es una de las casas más viejas que se mantienen en pie aquí. Al estar en las afueras de Caracas y tener mucho suelo fértil, Macarao fue hasta bien entrado el siglo XX una zona netamente agrícola, proveedora de hortalizas, vegetales y frutas para la gente de la capital.* <center></center> <center></center> Note the adobe (mud mass) wall that still persists in this other old house. >*Fíjense en la pared de adobe (masa de barro) que aún persiste en esta otra casa vieja.* <center></center> There are also buildings that have been restored, like this colonial house, we were not able to see it inside but it surely has a beautiful internal courtyard like all those of this style. >*También hay edificaciones que han sido restauradas, como esta casa colonial, no pudimos verla por dentro pero seguramente tiene un bello patio interno como todas las de este estilo.* <center></center> We also passed by an emblematic site of the town, the library, which although due to the technology that surrounds us today is no longer visited as it used to be, it is still active and there were some people consulting books. >*Pasamos también por un emblemático sitio del pueblo, la biblioteca, que aunque por la tecnología que hoy nos rodea ya no es visitada como antes, sigue activa y había algunas personas consultando libros.* <center></center> <center></center> Finally we headed to the town cemetery to take more pictures and wow!, it has a very beautiful setting because it is surrounded by vegetation and mountains. >*Finalmente nos dirigimos al cementerio del pueblo para hacer más fotos y ¡vaya!, tiene un entorno muy hermoso porque está rodeado de vegetación y montañas.* <center></center> And it is that this cool area of Caracas is home to the Macarao National Park, which with its 15,000 hectares is an important reservoir of flora, fauna and water resources. >*Y es que esta fresca zona de Caracas alberga el Parque Nacional Macarao, que con sus 15.000 hectáreas es un importante reservorio de flora, fauna y recursos hídricos.* <center></center> <center></center> Despite being close to a large and congested city like Caracas, it seems to me that Macarao preserves in many of its corners that pleasant atmosphere that rural places usually have. >*A pesar de estar cerca de una gran y congestionada ciudad como Caracas, me parece que Macarao conserva en muchos de sus rincones ese agradable ambiente que suelen tener los sitios rurales.* <br> <center>**THANKS FOR VISITING MY BLOG! / ¡GRACIAS POR VISITAR MI BLOG!**</center> <br> <sub>***Photos taken with a Sony Cyber Shot digital camera / Fotos hechas con una cámara digital Sony Cyber Shot***</sub> [//]:# (!pinmapple 10.42622 lat -67.03569 long d3scr)
