I think the models involving the tiny extra dimensions are pure mathematical ones to give mathematical meaningful solutions to overcome discrepancies with the current models. It doesn´t mean those extra dimensions do really exist. But if, there would be no way for us to detect them. In a higher dimensional universe (no proof of its existence however) we indeed would appear like flatlanders in our universe. By the way, we don´t have to apply the flatlander´s analogy. Already the 4th dimension, the time, is not reachable for us, we can see time only as going by, but we cannot influence it. You gotta admit the 5th Dimension had a great sound back in the 60's. Sorry, I couldn't resist. With regard to time travel, how do we know it is not possible to travel through time? We discover new things all the time. One day flight was impossible. Then in 1903 it was shown to be possible. Now we all fly. It is that nagging problem that we don't know until we know. We also can't know what we don't know. With the Block Universe Theory (all things exist in space-time and passing of time is an illusion) time travel should be possible, in theory.
