Looking to go electric
I will start by saying I am no petrolhead. Cars for me are a convenient form of transport. I have never had a really sporty one, but then I did have a fairly quick motorbike for years. I could happily live without a car, but where we live there is limited public transport. I can get to work by train, but doing the shopping and other activities need a car. We actually own three vehicles, but our old camper van is in need of repairs and my trusty Hyundai i10 recently suffered a gearbox failure, so we just have our old Honda CRV to use for now.

I have been keeping an eye on the electric car market for some years. They have been steadily improving and there is now a huge range of models to select from. It used to be pretty much just the [Nissan Leaf](https://www.nissan.co.uk/vehicles/new-vehicles/leaf.html). Now most manufacturers have a fully electric model. I could go for a hybrid, but that is a compromise in that you have both times of motor to worry about and most cannot go far purely on electric. We have the Honda for long journeys, but we rarely do more than fifty miles in a day.

The 'death' of the Hyundai has added some urgency to the search, but we hope to have extra funds soon. We may just need to buy a cheap petrol car to tide us over and it will also be something for the kids to practice in before they take their tests. You need a manual transmission for that.

So the plan is to lease an electric car when our funds come through. I have been looking at the options and it looks like you pay from around £1500 up front and then from £200 each month. Running costs should be minimal as electrics are much cheaper per mile than petrol. Leasing appeals due to the high purchase cost and the fact that there are likely to be better models in just a few years. We have a driveway and will, of course, get a charging point and that should cost a few hundred pounds after getting a government grant. The public charging infrastructure is improving all the time. I will have to look into how you pay for those.

If we have enough money we are also looking to get some solar electric panels for the house that may also have some storage capacity so we may be able to at least partly charge the car from the sun. This has a high up-front cost too, but it is something we have long wanted to do. Solar panels have come down a lot in price since we built our house sixteen years ago.

There is lots of information available on electric cars now. The major motoring press cover them and there are some more specialist outlets. [Next Gteen Car](https://www.nextgreencar.com) has lots of reviews and information. [DriveElectric](https://www.drive-electric.co.uk/) specialises in leasing them.

I have watched a lot of videos from the Fully Charged channel. They have reviewed lots of cars and have some videos on other alternative fuel issues.

These are some of the models we are considering. Of course a Tesla would be nice, but cost is an issue and I am not looking for spectacular performance and some of the extra features like self-driving.

The Hyundai Ioniq is one of the cheaper lease options. This is from a couple of years ago, so there may be changes since then.

https://youtu.be/0kZgYdKmIKA

The VW e-Golf is also cheap to lease. Other cars may have a longer range, but that is not a high priority for us. I know some people need to drive 300 miles all the time, but they are exceptions. The e-Golf is more conventional than some electric cars as it is more of an adapted existing model than a whole new one. They have extended the range a lot over the first version. Batteries are improving all the time, but unless you can afford a Tesla you will have to accept that you need to plan long journeys.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah4lrqWx8E0

I will have to look at the economics and see if it is worth paying more for a Leaf or BMW i3. There is the Renault Zoe that has less range, but that may be too limiting. There is an electric Mini due out some time.

I am interested in hearing from anyone with experience of electric cars. I know @demotruk has had a Leaf and I have talked to him about it.

I would hope we will get our first electric car in the next few months and of course I will write about it on Steem.

I realise than all cars have an environmental impact, but given that we need a car we can try to make it greener. If we can generate our own power then the arguments about them using power generated with fossil fuels is less of an issue. Those arguments are a bit spurious as refining oil for fuel uses a lot of electrical power too.

Steem on!

Well duh! You may notice I mentioned getting a battery for those. You can get some that were previously in electric cars, but still have a lot of capacity. We are out a lot during the day, but you get something for selling your power to the grid.

You always gotta go with the VW. That German engineering you know... I am kind of excited about he Ford electric truck that is coming out in the future. I think their partnerships will put them very far ahead of the competition. Because of the vast expanses over here I don't feel like electric is always the most feasible option. At least right now anyway. We will get there eventually.

Well my Indian built Hyundai did 115k miles with nothing serious going wrong until just now. The Germans must be worried. The viability does depend on where you are. If you like in a city and can charge on your drive then it is probably best to go electric, especially as you may avoid road charges as in London. I know you do some long trips. Even visiting our daughter at university 80 miles away may be viable if we can do a rapid charge there to top up. Getting to my sister in Scotland would be trickier, but after a couple of hours of driving I need a rest anyway.

@jacobtothe ·
One solution may be buying a Prius with a dead battery and doing the replacement work yourself. Elbow grease is required, and I know you didn't like the complexity and potential problems of two powertrains, but it could be far less expensive. [Video here.](https://youtu.be/Q3RCdrh666w)

A pure electric is a good option for a commuter car and short-distance driving, but the expense is significant, the battery replacement cost is significant (although avoided in your lease plan), and neither mains power nor solar nor battery technology is very environmentally friendly, but solar at home is becoming more viable nowadays. It could work.

A simple gas-powered economy car is still probably the best way to go, IMHO. New automatic transmissions are starting to be more efficient than manuals. Support infrastructure is everywhere.

I'm not really looking to go the DIY route. Leasing a petrol car is not much cheaper. It's just the way we prefer to go and it is a viable option these days. Should be less maintenance as a lot of the things that wear out on a car are not there. Even the brakes should last longer as you can use the motor to recover the energy.

Interesting. I do not know if they are available in the UK. Do they make right hand drive cars? I know Chinese motorbikes are sold here, but I do not know of any cars from there. If they can produce electric cars much cheaper then I am sure they will sell.

I don't know if you can already get their cars there as a private person.

Not too many options for that in our small town, but there are schemes in cities. Our public transport is limited and expensive.

I am holding out the best I can so that my next car will be an all-electric. It seems silly to me that there are still so few people getting behind it as, *Air quality matters.* In Finland cars come with a heavy cost including electrics which don't seem to get much of a subsidy, but hopefully that changes soon. I already have a charging point in my carpark for the winter (even though I don't have an engine warmer in my Honda), but I am unsure if it will have a high enough voltage.

Regardless, the plan is electric as even though at times it might be inconvenient for long trips, 99% of the time it will be fine. The other benefit is that while the batteries are improving, eventually a battery swap is all that is needed to get a "new engine" and while the electricity it runs on now might be less than green , that can change with innovation and if the demand moves away from petrol, the innovation budget increases. An electric car doesn't care where the electricity comes from, a combustion engine always needs fuel.

I have been thinking the same. Burning oil is on the way out. As you say the electricity can come from anywhere. There's a lot of solar and wind here these days.

And who knows what the next innovations will be in things like clean nuclear or who knows what else on top.
