TIL: A parrot can ask questions

Last night I was at the recording of a [BBC radio show](http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00snr0w). The Infinite Monkey Cage is a mix of science and comedy, but they can really go into depth. The topic was the mind and covered various areas including cognition and language. One of the experts mentioned [Alex the parrot](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_%28parrot%29). This bird was studied for thirty years and showed a high level of intelligence. Various animals such as chimps, gorillas and dolphins have been taught to use language, but apparently they never ask questions. Alex was given various tasks involving colours. One day he saw himself in a mirror and said "What colour?". I'm sure that must have got a big reactions from the researchers. Unfortunately Alex died at the fairly young age of 30. This sort of experiment can be controversial as the scientists may be giving unconscious hints to the subjects, but maybe other animals are smarter than we assume. We are animals too and maybe there is a smooth scale of intelligence rather than us being on a totally different level. I'm sure most pet owners see some intelligence in their pets, yet many of them will still eat animals of with brains of a similar complexity. Funny old world we live in.

Say steev, I was gonna say you forgot to use the right tags, but I feel you know what you're doing.

What you just posted about intelligence in animals is actually one if the reasons why people become vegetarians. When we see animals as more than meat bags, then some form of hesitation should come over us b4 killing them, personally can't stand to see a chicken or a cow slaughtered.

Also, intelligence in animals is still pretty confusing, I mean, does a chicken know why I'm feeding it fat? Why doesn't it run/escape when I open the cage?

What did I get wrong with the tags? I wonder how much people use them anyway. 

Our relationship with animals is complex, but I just try to encourage thinking about it. We keep chickens, but have no intention to kill them. They are sort of pets who also give us eggs. We will try to give them a good life. 

I don't think most animals can plan like we do, but they have a form of consciousness.

about the tag, was gonna say you have one left, but its all good.

Parrots are really smart.I once saw a cockatoo that could recite the entire alphabet.  He would arrange colour rings in  order of the colour.  He would whistle that "amazing grace" song so loud and so well. I was so impressed. Thank you for sharing your post

sounds like fun the idea of going to a radio show and watching behind the scenes as they record it... The parrot died at a young age, that's too bad, don't they live to like 78 or something?.. what a cool story.  When our dog Jerry, an aussie passed, we had him put to sleep at the vet clinic they had a parrot in the room at the head of the medical bed, that bothered me.  No telling what this intelligent creature had to watch in that room. Apparently this one just dropped dead one day, but they can have a long life. I don't think animals think in the same way we do, but they are conscious beings who deserve to be well treated. Of course it varies a lot. I wouldn't consider an insect to have a personality.

We've been to a few radio and TV shows. You get the tickets for free.

Perhaps there is a shift occurring among the scientific community? I was under the impression that anthropomorphism wasn't a generally held belief. I know that people doing animal research like to tell themselves that animals don't have emotions or feelings.

As far as eating habits go, in nature about the only relatively common trait I have noticed is the tendency to avoid cannibalism.

I've not studied this much, but am going mainly from my own observations. When you say 'like to tell themselves' is this so they can justify what they do to animals? Don't meat eaters do this to?

Humans have broken away from the natural food cycle. Our diets are not very natural, but they may provide what we need. There are enough alternatives for us to not need meat. We can decide what we want to do.

I've seen this myself at an "animal park" where the trainers said it about dolphins.

It came across as pretty disingenuous.
