&nbsp;&nbsp;Ashanti un soldado de la milicia popular, que hace unos años consiguió ganar fama y prestigio, tras esclarecer el caso del demonio que destrozó varios pueblos en Benín, justo a las riberas del Río Mono, ahora fue ascendido por el gobierno al cargo de guardián, en una de las principales reservas para la protección de animales, como premio a su heroísmo, cuando logró encontrar a la jirafa enfurecida.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Su vida ha mejorado notablemente, su única preocupación por estos días es cuidar a la manada de elefantes de la persecución de los cazadores de marfil, una situación que maneja bastante bien, gracias al apoyo de los organismos internacionales que financia el mantenimiento de la reserva, junto a los científicos y fotógrafos que pasean por las arcillosas mesetas recolectando datos para sus estudios, sobre el desarrollo y sostenibilidad de la vida a largo tiempo de estos animales, en peligro de extinción.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Según le comentó uno de los investigadores durante la tradicional cena en el campamento, ellos tienen especial preocupación por una de las manadas, ya que de acuerdo a sus datos, los elefantes integrantes de esta familia, representan el 50% de la población de raza pura de la especie que aún sobrevive en todo el planeta, quedando solo 3 machos con vida.

&nbsp;&nbsp;El viejo guardián finalmente da por concluida su pesada jornada diaria, retirándose a la cama colgante para dormir unas cuantas horas, disfrutando de las bajas temperaturas que se acercan, mientras contempla el retumbar de los truenos que abren el cántico del agua precipitándose sobre los suelos agrietados, trayendo consigo nueva vida, lo que le da tranquilidad a su corazón en tanto entra en un sueño profundo, recibiendo el rocío del agua tibia que escurre desde el techo de tejas del campamento.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Un poderoso estruendo llega desde la sabana hasta los oídos de  Ashanti, despertándose de golpe con la respiración agitada y trayendo a su mente inevitablemente, los recuerdos que aquella aterradora noche donde casi muere, inhalando profundo intenta recobrar la calma y se incorpora en medio de la oscuridad totalmente desconcertado, ante ese extraño sonido que parecía disimularse entre los ecos de los truenos, pero que se escuchaba mucho más seco.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Fue solo cuando oía los llantos agonizantes de un elefante, que su mente comprendió que eso era el disparo traicionero de una potente escopeta, así que de inmediato buscó su arma y subió a toda velocidad al vehículo de la reserva para dirigirse al lugar del evento, sabiendo en su interior que seguramente ya era muy tarde.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Luego de un tortuoso trayecto entre la oscuridad y los lodazales que hicieron complicado el avance del rústico, el guardaparque finalmente llegó a un desolado agujero donde yacía inerte, el cadáver de un elefante macho, al cual lamentablemente cazadores furtivos le habían arrancado los colmillos para sustraer el marfil. Una realidad aberrante que afecta a la población de estos animales, situándolos al borde de la extinción, tan solo por unos cuantos kilos de ese precioso hueso, que mantiene un altísimo valor en el mercado negro, para la elaboración de joyas.

&nbsp;&nbsp;Esta historia aunque es ficticia, no se aleja para nada de la realidad que está acabando con gran parte de la fauna de las planicies africanas, a manos de cazadores sin escrúpulos, que ya no respetan ni siquiera los linderos de las zonas protegidas y los refugios de animales, un espectro que esperamos algún día se desvanezca, cuando el hombre común, tome conciencia del daño tan grave que está haciendo, a los seres vivos de nuestra hermosa tierra.
