ARE ANTS VEGANS OR PREDATORS?

Hello to HiveFam from our Ants Family who live with us for 1 year already.
And you know what was the main surprise for me? I never expected ants to be predators!

These small even tiny insects eat seeds, fruits, veggies - anything but all food is natural, and ...not alive.
How mistaken I was!

When the consultant of Ant shop told me that we had to buy daphnia for them, I was puzzled...why....but ok, no problem.

Then she told us we had to give pieces of meat from time to time. What??? Meat to ants?
And they really were happy when my hubby brought them pieces of meat.

And finally we decided to check whether they would eat...another insects or not! Like real predators!

My son found a fly somewhere at the balcony. We had very warm weather during some weeks, and the nature wanted to get up earlier that it usually happens. But now it's real winter, and all insects had hatd times. LIke this dead fly.

My son is always happy when he has something interesting to give to his ants because their investigations are always super cool.

So he gave them that dead fly....and...you know what?
They were so happy!!
It seemed to me they were hungry for some months, because their activity increased many times!

They were running around the fly trying to catch her and...take away to their secret rooms with food.
And they managed to do it very fast! Even 1 ant can take 1 big fly to his room! they are really very strong!!

After some hours there was no fly any more....only wings were left...
Don't know why but they don't eat wings of other insects. Maybe they are not tasty;)
