An Alternate Palate

I was halfway through a much, much heavier piece than this and then thought, *no, this can wait.* Normally I don't do that and will write out my thoughts from start to finish, but tonight I just wanted to write something that was lighter, more personal, and just well, not something that is critical of the world in some way. I spend a lot of time on the current state of it all and while I am far from impressed, it does weigh heavy on me to focus attention there. Sometimes, it is good to have a breather, catch the wind back, and cleanse the palate.

*Moving on.* 

A funny thing happened today, as my daughter made a friend with the next door neighbour child, who is two years younger but the same height as Smallsteps. She came into the house for the first time and firstly asked "why is your house so ridiculous?" which was probably more a decorating style thing as the colour *palette* of our home is quite white and neutral. The second question was "Why does your dad look like that?"*Like what?* "So brown!"

I don't think Smallsteps has really had to answer those kinds of questions before, but she just said that, *he is from Australia, nearly everyone looks like that there.* Which in her experience of having talked mostly to my family, is true. 

> They had fun playing together. 


And now the holiday for Smallsteps begins for real, as tomorrow my wife will go to work while we play around the house and  maybe take a trip to the city by tram. With the new school starting, she is going to have to learn how to travel alone there, so we are going to practice several times until she is comfortable. Plus, her cousins live in the city and we are going to shuttle them backwards and forwards through the summer to spend time together.

And, I was thinking that since I have a museum pass, Smallsteps and I can visit the various museums together and spend time really going through and seeing what is on offer. Normally, we are on more of a schedule and when my wife is there, it is harder to keep Smallsteps' attention. With me though, we can have a ball talking along the way. I think she would appreciate the displays more when she has some time to think about them.

But that is not on the cards for tomorrow, because on Mondays, all the museums are closed in Finland apparently. So, we can do it later in the week, or next week, or the week after... We have time. And of course, we have plenty of things to do around the house. Well, I do. The garden needs constant vigilance and I have many, many projects that need doing soon.

Next on the cards:

- 2-3 Planter boxes (1 almost done)
- Bin storage shelter 

I have immensely enjoying getting my hands dirty of late. 

And see? I don't think there was anything too heavy in here tonight and I think it was just what the doctor ordered for my mind to get a little space for a bit, and get the coming week started with a little family reflection. It is effective to plan the week ahead, but in my experience, *don't get too attached* to the plans, because things will likely change anyway.

>How's your week looking?

Woooooooooork! After 2 weeks of a mix of being sick, then hungover, then sick again, there's a lot waiting. And after 2 weeks of bare minimum, I'm hyper motivated to get a mega amount of stuff done. Trying to cut swearwords out of my regular vocabulary, but mega amount does sound weird. 

I wasn't able to do much with Lily, either, though we had our moments. Especially today, we took her and a friend of hers to the next big town and did all the cool things - eating Vietnamese style ice cream, doing that huge ship-swing that almost made me vomit, trampoline, shopping (Ellie bought her earrings, her friend unicorn-hair-clips [she's 2 years younger] and herself a bracelet), and then eating sushi and drinking bubble tea. It was great to have such a patchwork-family-day. 

I did finish sieving the compost the other day. Did not do my lungs well, as I almost coughed them out after the effort while still being a little sick. I didn't make my hands too dirty, but my shoes, oh, my shoes! got about 80kg of compost earth now. Nice little pile.

Hope you'll have a great week ahead! Those museum plans sound very enjoyable. And Smallsteps seems to be in the age of enjoying those very much. That curiosity they have...

Of course they are, but I tend to use them too much, and they slip in when Lily is listening. So, I'm replacing them. I started that because I was using swearwords in Spanish which I learned among friends. Thinking they weren't that bad, I used them in other occasions. That wasn't a good idea, so I had to learn to not use them again. Some people here are very sensitive...

I had to make about three separate trips to the store to get more lumber and I still didn't have enough!  I have one small section that I just kind of piecemealed together. I think my biggest issue is how the sides attach to the legs, I really screwed up there.  You can see the finished project in the opening photo of my post today.

I devote three or four days a week to my daughter. She is only two and a half years old. She continues to surprise me with her cutest behavior. I love the way she asks about everything she sees and the surprised look on her face when she hears it. Once, when she asked whose hand cream was on the table and I couldn't remember which one of us bought it, I answered that it was mine. I was confronted with my daughter answering me that no, it wasn't yours, it was my mom's. I think museums are not only fun for children but also very useful for their developmental processes. Have a good weekend.

I agree. two and a half might be a little young, but it won't be long until walking through a museum can be filled with great conversation. Enjoy it!

Monday work and maintenance of the lawn on the property I am trying to offload.

Tuesday taking parents in law to the doctor to fill out POLST firms

Wednesday in person all day work in Seattle 

Thursday production deployment at work and placing father in law in retirement home

Friday easy day - work and a haircut

POLST: Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment. It is basically a medical form where he tells what he wants to be done to him in case he cannot make decisions himself. Like if he wants to be on life-support and stuff like that...

The decision wasn't mine, I am just helping my mother in law to place him in the home. She has been caring for him for years and it is getting worse, so she is at the end of her rope...

Taking a short break from the intensity of life and planning some fun moments with your daughter is a very good decision. I have been getting my hands dirty lately. I am interested in gardening. I look after animals. I really enjoy it. It makes me feel like I have accomplished something.

Yesterday we were in our garden. I thought that wine and shashlik were the best. But it turned out that I liked mowing the grass around the blueberry bushes the most :) The day was pleasant, +21 degrees Celsius and there was not a single mosquito or midge.
