Building Blocked
<div class="text-justify">

I wonder what it says about a person who when playing with assorted Lego pieces, they try to make sure that the colors match. Is it an obsessive compulsive thing, or is it a creative thing? Perhaps it could be both together, or maybe neither, or either - but depending on the person, there might be something that could be inferred from their behavior, if cross-referenced with other traits to build a cluster.

>This is what I was thinkin about when Smallsteps we playing at a shopping center activity display.

She didn't care about the colors she was using, but it has always driven me a little crazy since childhood when I wasn't able to have enough of one color to make a design uniform. I would often disassemble and find another way to do it, so that the colors would be uniform.

I don't think I have OCD.

*I don't even have good attention to detail.*

I am one of those MVP creators, not the most valuable player, but someone who can put together a *minimum viable product* quickly, and then let others pore over the details and flesh it out. There is value in both aspects, but details are meaningless without frameworks to hang them on, so there is a process required.

A lot of my work however is in the details, which might not be the best fit for my personality, but gives me an opportunity to build skills in other areas. Though with this, I also wonder where is the line between the value of focusing on what we are good at and diversifying our skills into other areas.

For instance, most jobs these days are not specialized in the same sense as they were, as there are far more tasks involved that might lay outside of the specialty itself. Even something like a manager has to do a range of tasks that forty years ago had a team of people performing them, whether that be admin or forecasting work. Now, a lot of these things have been combined, even if they aren't the strength of the person, but they still have to be met at a "passing grade" for the position.

This widens, but dilutes the skill base and has an opportunity cost on high skill areas. For an illustration of this, it is like an office worker who decides to do their own renovations. They go onto YouTube and learn how to do things and even though they get it done, it takes longer and still probably at a lower quality to a professional tradesperson. But, it might be cheaper, as long as *nothing goes wrong* in the process - which it often does.

So, what is the balance between developing new skills and honing the skills we have, the ones that provide the majority of our value? We are encouraged to skill diversify, but is that really the best option, or is it a middle-path solution, trying to play it safe?

This is something I have to consider in terms of the skill development opportunities for my daughter, as it is very difficult to predict what will be necessary and, what will be in demand. One of the things that I consider as important are core parts of personality growth traits, like the ability and willingness to learn, as well as emotional stability and resiliency to overcome challenge. There are other skills like interpersonal and collaborative skills, as well as situational awareness aspects that can be developed also.

What I do predict is that in the future, whatever the skills needs are, there is going to be a lowering of people who are able to do the harder to possess skills, because the culture is about ease of uptake now, where "easy to obtain" is the target, even if it isn't something that is tradeable.

Tradability is important, because if we don't having something to trade for whatever we need to live, we are going to struggle heavily. Obviously, it is easy to look at skills trades like plumbing and electrical to earn money, but there are other things that bring us value too. For instance, social interaction and companionship. If all we have to trade is sex, we aren't likely going to end up building those deep connections we value and consider make a good life. But, if we are emotionally volatile and unable to negotiate and compromise, we are also unlikely to build connections.

Life is a bit like all of those Lego blocks in the picture, it is what we make of it. There is no clear plan on what is right or wrong, but there are frameworks we can use as guides to build upon. Sometimes, we might want to dive into and develop the details, but things don't always go to plan, the conditions change, colors don't match, so we have to shift our approach.

At the end of the day, whatever we build will eventually be taken to pieces and returned to the universe, but the plans we leave can create the frameworks for those that come to build faster, better, stronger - and make the best of what they have, creating lives they value.

Big fan of MVP here, itโ€™s about getting things out consistently. I remember hearing a very prolific creator along time ago to talk about the work to publish model. Especially with where the state of algorithms are today, you are rewarded for being consistent.

You know that with this reflection I asked myself a question: If there is something I am not so good at or it is difficult for me, is it good for me to put more effort into it? Or on the contrary, I concentrate on what I am good at and enjoy it without any obligation.
Sometimes because of study or work we have to make an effort in things that do not go with our personality because society puts each one of us in a box without caring about anything else.

I agree with the point that it is more important to work on the personLity skills than that of occupational skills. An openness to learning and resilience makes it possible for us to face the challenges bravely and adopt what is needed.

How rapidly the world is changing, it can never be said which skill would be in demand in the future or which one will be obsolete. A preparation for the future is to build a strong personality along with valuable interpersonal characteristics

We cannot make life a puzzle to put together or a Rubik's Cube to find the colour face to face; life is random, we can plan and make all the provisions, but always something does not go as planned. Life is not a Lego game; well, yes, why not, a Lego game with defective pieces from the factory? Best wishes that you are enjoying your family holidays to the fullest. A hug from afar.

I used to be one of those people that needed to have things "just right". Attention to detail was something that started when I was a kid and was pounded in my head in the military. But, ever since I started my health struggles, that seemed to fall away. Not sure what happened, but I just stopped caring so much about things having a specific place or what colors matched. I am starting to gain a little of that back now. I think it was a matter of mental health more than anything.

As far as a manager needing to have more skills these days, I agree. It is not enough to be a great leader, and have good management skills. For instance if you work in IT, you have to be well versed in the technical aspects of a great deal of things now. It used to be you could be an inch deep and a mile wide as long as you were a good leader and could manage budget and projects.

It is strange how some people's attention to detail keeps them functioning, and for another, it is a dysfunction. I think we all need some order in our lives, but at least for me, too much saps my strength as much as having too little.

I think the breadth of the skills we need to function well in a typical job is underrated these days - and a lot of people don't have many of them, but those that do - aren't rewarded.

I think breadth for most managers is what is needed, at least those in IT service, but instead they are looking for the opposite. They want depth instead. So what you get is a manager who was a real shit hot network administrator with a CCNP, but can't manage a budget, lead a team, deal with escalations and customers, or think outside the tech box...all at the same time. Just my observations before I left the field.

Funny how kids can reveal so much about themselves when they play. My grandson has a road made out of clip together carpet /rubber tiles. Most kids would keep it flat and drive cars, but no he builds a 3 d house with a roof. Most kids don't think like that and he also likes his toys in straight neat little lines. I am fascinated watching how his brain thinks. Happy to see some creativity at least which is a good sign.

> it has always driven me a little crazy since childhood when I wasn't able to have enough of one color to make a design uniform.

I'm with you mate. I need my designs to at least be symmetrical or it would drive me absolutely crazy. I CRAVE symmetry in my lego structures.

I've also been out of work for the past 3 months, and I'm fi ding it increasingly difficult to find opportunities that matched my prior wages and living standards. Competition for job placements has indeed gotten stronger and more daunting. It is rough out here in unemployment land.

I had a beautiful set of Derwents once upon a time, similar to this:

https://static.craftelier.com/media/catalog/product/cache/mtda/858x858/s/t/studio_derwent_madera_72.jpg

I always kept them in color order, because it made it far more efficient to find them :)

When I was a kid, I got a lot of hand me down Lego pieces and it was in a big box all mixed up. There was something calming about the sound it made as I would dig through there looking for the right piece.

@ryivhnn ·
One of the things to not get hung up on is thinking that you need to impart all of these skills to children from birth. There are a lot of things that the brain quite simply will not get until itโ€™s good and ready no matter how early you start and how many different teaching techniques you apply. If youโ€™ve done the basics (teach reading, writing, maths, optionally basic physics/chemistry which is like cooking and tides and stuff falls when you throw it, optionally other practical skills if youโ€™re into that kind of thing, research and cross referencing skills, ability to deal with being wrong and perhaps most importantly curiosity and love of learning, bar learning difficulties and extreme introverts, social skills will come if you keep doing social things) then theyโ€™ve got a solid base from which to learn whatever skills they want.

Iโ€™m reasonably sure youโ€™ll have most of not all of that stuff going already.

On the Lego thing I struggled to remember the last time I played with Lego and the brick colours being what they were and also having a lot more more than I did as a kid (we have a huge crate and sadly the kids donโ€™t play with it anymore) I think I just made interesting patterns in whatever I was making. I canโ€™t remember what the kids did, think the big two went for aesthetics, eldest had the habit of overcomplicating everything from young and youngest would generally just make without a care. Seems to be more or less the same in Minecraft ๐Ÿ˜†

I think Iโ€™m doomed, I apparently have no valuable skills, as the best I had were my storytelling/entertainment abilities ๐Ÿ˜…

Life is like the Lego blocks, but they do not fit each other all the time, that is to say, it does not always go as we have planned. As you said, everything can change in life in a moment. We should be ready for this, and have B, C, D... plans.
