Emotional contingency - not a SteemDAO proposal
<div class="text-justify">

My proposal for the SteemDAO is to add a quick-start button. I am not sure what that looks like for a blockchain, but the one in my Honda looks like the one pictured.

Of course, it needs to be subtly adapted to be suitable for Steem.

![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdy4JD2ZQe6BqZhkAtFS3s8M7fQumFdz6czFV3fDfpWaG/image.png)

It was nice to have a near full 24 hours off Steem although I did notice that life is quite boring as I spend a fair bit of my time using and browsing Steem-related content in my free-time. It also became very apparent how much as the browser on my phone has 22 tabs open - *nearly all of them Steem,* with 2-3 crypto related.

I haven't investigated what actually happened past a few details to do with some curation calculations as I figure, there is nothing much I can do to help or change the situation and I will find out more later. There have likely been people formulating their posts over the last day and I wonder how many will be, "You know how much this cost me??"

Today I had a training session with a large client who is implementing the software my company sells and they are testing the configuration for a go live *some time next year.* The project development and implementation for this one client is between 2-4 years of work and then ongoing maintenance afterward to troubleshoot and reconfigure as necessary. When dealing with these kinds of things with companies that turnover billions, very little actually moves fast - nor is it ever cheap.

And - never is it perfect.

Next week I am going to be training a support team in another very large corporation what to do in the event of various catastrophic failures. Each company has internal processes, but the depth at which they go is generally dependent on what is at stake. For global companies, contingency planning is essential as when there are thousands and millions of moving parts, the chances of error are very high and small errors can set off chain reaction events that flow down the supply chain and by the time they are realized, it is hard to pinpoint their true origin.

Usually what happens is that the "cause" of a problem is determined by the perspective of the viewer and something like the question whether light is a particle or a wave, the answer varies depends on what one is looking for. Normally, people are looking or someone to blame for their misfortune or pain and while this might redirect the emotional imbalance and focus it externally, rarely is it useful.

When it comes to the development errors on Steem I am pretty forgiving as while there is a massive amount of room for improvement across several factors including testing and *external* communication, most of what is going on is so far outside of my expertise that it is difficult to comment on. Yes, I can throw my arms up and lay blame of various kinds, but really, what good does it do and how does it help improve *anything?*

I find it funny how large the imbalance is between the numbers of those complaining, and the numbers of those who can actually do something practical to change outcomes. The other interesting thing is that when the error is in a personal domain of expertise and the shoe is on the other foot, people want understanding and patience from the non-expert and critical audience.

But, everyone acts rationally based on their *emotions,* and while the "reason and logic" might not be apparent to others, personally it seems perfectly suitable for the occasion, otherwise it wouldn't be done. For some, getting upset with arms and legs kicking and screaming like a child throwing a tantrum - feels perfectly natural. Others might take the same conditions, shrug their shoulders and get on with their day.

This is the thing with contingency planning at a personal level; it doesn't matter how good your plans are, if your emotional reaction doesn't support the process required, they are useless. It is like having a fire extinguisher in your kitchen for emergencies, and then throwing water onto a grease fire. Emotional reactions especially under stressful negative conditions generally lead to knee-jerk reactions that do not support a positive outcome.

Anyway, I figure that some people might react poorly to the last 24 hours of Steem after having HF 21 and then HF 22 soon after to correct bugs, only to be followed by more adverse conditions. Others might take it all in stride however and perhaps they have become accustomed and desensitized to various errors and freezes on Steem and have instead moved away from the emotional reaction of the upset consumer and into the wait and see position of stakeholder or action stance of developer to correct issues.

Perhaps emotional contingency and tempered reactions are a sign of maturity and rather than looking for someone to blame, they look for something to do.

Some made the most of it.

Investigate no further my friend. I've already made the **official** ['announcement'](https://www.palnet.io/newsteem/@por500bolos/newersteem-too-much-spuds-wrecked-the-steem-blockchain-plus) about what's going on. :)

I had a fantastic time in discord cracking jokes and enjoyed non steem stuff. I even had a hang sesh with a steemian IRL and we didn't talk about steem at all.. I made it through 25 years or so online without steem so I survived today no problem.

I'm really still trying to find out if steem is suspended on binance due to our HF issues or is it AWS and out of our control ? I haven't seen anyone talk about this which I find odd.. I used palnet for the first time ever today so that's a thing.. Push start sounds great but what happens if the button shorts out? Coding is above my pay grade as long as my flag mana is recharged I'm happy 😂

@tarazkp ·
I quite enjoy the downtimes :D

Not sure about Binance but pretty sure they have to close the wallets when the chain freezes, which is why they run their own nodes and why having to ask them to update all the time sucks :)

Yes it's strange being one of only a handful of steemians online. Like talking a stroll at 3am when the world is asleep..

Binance not working whilst steem is frozen makes sense but it's been at least a week now, pre HF if I'm not mistaken.. I know someone told me they saw a 1 million steem buy on bittrex yesterday..
