Finding calm in a sea of streams
<div class="text-justify">

My wife is worried that we are going to lose the value we have in crypto. I understand her well, after the struggles we have had in the last years, conditions she hadn't really experienced before, as she always knew she had a fallback position. Me however, have faced financial challenges a lot in my life and am accustomed to living a bit more on the edge.

One thing I am glad about at the moment though is, that while I haven't much outside of crypto, at least my portfolio is looking a little bit more diverse than it was not so long ago. Hive used to be by far the largest part of my holdings, but over the last year I have taken some opportunity to diversify a little (a little too much in some cases) and have seen some gains in some of those tokens that has allowed me to spread risk a bit further.

What I have noticed by making myself less "reliant" on Hive is that I am much calmer than I was, as not all the eggs are in the one basket. Don't get me wrong here, I *really want* Hive to do well and I will work heavily for it, but I feel less pressure. It is similar to when I took a second job atop my already established business - while the workload increased, as did the work stress, the risk managed position and a little more financial stability meant that I didn't have this daily feeling of being chased.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmdLKzgJZYnaUzRSb6jNbr6SSuqLhG5hn6HAc2FYGW9Sv5/image.png)

In my experience, it is hard to act well under financial duress, in the same way it is hard to act well when angry, panicked or desperate. This doesn't just affect me of course, it affects everyone around me and everything I do, generally for the negative. I work well under time pressure, poorly under financial pressure, although I have learned to take a "business as usual" approach the best I can, to compensate for my habitual responses.

I had a new client start with me today and we were getting to know one another and we were talking about the challenges he faced in his divorce a year or so ago and how it affected him. This is a person who works in metal manufacturing, has sleeve tattoos and is a Finn, people not known for their sharing of personal information. But, we all need a place to talk and when someone can offer an environment where we feel comfortable and safe, we tend to open up.

We spent time talking about the natural responses we have to breakups and how it seeps into everything we do, often making us less capable to do what ew might have been great at prior. We tend to be less effective at work, worse parents and generally more disrupted, as we go through an emotional rollercoaster, with it always sitting close behind our eyes, reminding us of our disappointment and anger. It is hard to let go and move on, but in time we mostly heal and potentially, learn far more about ourselves and become stronger for it, improving our ability to deal with the world.

Perhaps due to my teen years, financial scarcity affects me in ways it might not impact on others, but I have essentially avoided learning about how to improve myself in these areas and instead, have lived in fear. The solution to this issue isn't to work to become rich, but it has to be understood that in the current and likely future society we have, we are all going to struggle if we do not take financial well-being seriously.

I do understand my wife's concerns about the loss though, as for years I have been telling her that, "it will be okay, that we will work it out, that we will survive", but it was largely empty, with the only real plan to make it okay being, work more. Which I did, but there are limits to just how much work one person can practically do in order to bring income. At some point, working "smarter" has to be combined with the work in order to compound the efforts and this requires finding new forms of revenue.

But it isn't enough to make more, that "more" has to be used well to generate income or at least, not used at all in order to build up some kind of nest egg. If that more is used to expand lifestyle in relation to the increase, no matter how much work is done, nothing changes other than what we consume. And at least for most of us now, we likely aren't entirely happy with where we currently are.

Life isn't all about money and it probably shouldn't be such a focus in our daily lives, but we are all affected by conditions and money is a feature of our environment, no different to the weather or the city in which we live. Our conditions affect us in many ways, including what we are able to do. If it is a sunny warm day, we might choose to go to the beach, but if we live far inland, we likely can't. While we do have choices, our environment limits our opportunity to choose, in the same way that if we do not have money, our options to purchase opportunity is greatly reduced.

While the best things in life might be free, even basic subsistence in modern society requires money. And, when we struggle to have enough for what is required, it is very easy to feel the pressure of scarcity and act accordingly, which is in general, not that well in comparison to when we feel we have enough. "Enough" is subjective and also based on conditions, but most people will have some sense of what this means to them, based on their own life experiences.

I wrote piece the other day about this being ["the year I walked away"](https://leofinance.io/@tarazkp/the-year-i-walked-away) from debt and this constant feeling of not having enough, by building a stronger foundation and expanding revenue streams. Each day I work toward that goal, with the end goal being that my wife and daughter will never have to face the stress of not having enough, or having to pass up opportunities for happiness by doing something they are good at and will love, because they don't have enough to take the chance.

While there is value in the struggle and I believe it plays a large role in who we are, I am not sure how much value there is in economic struggle, especially long-term. Perhaps the challenge shouldn't be trying to get enough money to survive or even thrive, it should be in exploring who we are and what we can do, in order to practice ourselves into the best versions of who we can be. When we are always having to chase a dollar first, it doesn't leave much time or energy to become our best.

A lot of people might disagree with me on the importance and connection of financial availability to happiness, but that could be due to the meme of "money doesn't make you happy". No one questions this, as either they have enough and are still unsatisfied, or don't have enough and have to believe that they can still be happy. Of course though, anyone can be happy under all kinds of conditions, but some conditions lower the bar, some raise it.

Money can't of course make us happy, it is just a tool, but it has the unique attribute of being able to buy almost anything. It doesn't care what it buys, but what it buys become conditions of our lives that influence us. I would love to be able to take my daughter to Australia to meet her family, but can't. I would love to be able to buy some time with my wife where we can be alone to enjoy each other's company over a nice dinner occasionally, but when we do, the sense of the "cost" is weighing in the back of the mind - both of ours. I would love to never again have to worry about my card clearing at the cost of groceries. I would love to be able to be able to be more charitable, without having to think about what I am going to have to go without to be so.

A world of abundance isn't just about ending suffering, that is just the first step. What it has to push into is us discovering the best versions of ourselves as individuals and as a society of people who inhabit the same environment, the one that affects us all and limits our opportunities. One day, money might not be a feature of our environment at all, but they aren't the current conditions of our lives.

Charity starts at home, so does the world of plenty.

Nice post touching life challenges!
(You should mention the troubles on facing technology; for example the spammers ruined my Everyday posting since weeks ago! Still I am not able to post at Hive, neither at Leofinance. At least I am happy to see my last investment at booth is growing!
And yes, this amazing opportunities on cryptos can give us some Peace of mind, if we are patients.

I just changed the Hivesigner password. When I have tried to do Recupere account, it said there is not someone trying to change. So I cannot change the Keys, or at least I don't know how.

First off, I have to say that is a wonderful picture, I love the softness and pastoral setting it evokes.

I like the phrase "money doesn't make you happy", it might not, but it is needed to buy new toys, and while the shine of new toys wears off in time, it was still fun to play with.

I think we are in a good time right now for crypto, especially with a few things I see happening on Hive. one week and it will be one year for Hive. HF 25 is getting close, the setting of one more foundation stone or two. I think outside interest are beginning to see Hive is becoming a serious block chain.

One month ago at $0.12 and lately bouncing around the $0.30 range and interest being provided for the savings account part now, so people can save and not wait 13 weeks on a power down, but be able to get what they want in three days. The rate is not much right now, but more than any bank. I think the long term nest egg can be a very real thing for Hive.

> HF 25 is getting close, the setting of one more foundation stone or two.

I really hope that *the next one* will introduce some new capabilities.

>I think outside interest are beginning to see Hive is becoming a serious block chain.

It only really takes one or two influencers to make a move - and everything changes.

>The rate is not much right now, but more than any bank

People compare it to other defi pools though, not banks. What would be interesintg is to have a native defi pool on Hive. It would be a powerhouse for the community.

When we are always having to chase a dollar first, it doesn't leave much time or energy to become our best.

I couldn't agree more. I think that being calmer and having more options can help in achieving a balance. We would all like to be more generous, but from my experience I have learned that first you have to help yourself in order to be able to help others later

Depends on if you have money or not.

It should, considering the size of the populations.

Hahaha, I have always worked, worked and much more worked, but the smart that you talk about is still missing to this day.
With a wife and 3 kids I had to work every day and also many nights and there was never a cent to spare or to save. Funny how one can get used to that after many years and work was always the answer.

Now only, as I am much older, some thoughts have dawned about smart money, savings and such, but it is a stranger to me and I just have to plow on forth hoping to plant some seeds that will grow.
Soon I will not be able to work anymore and that chapter of my life will be closed.

Too late to learn the tricks of investments and such, but hope is still aflame that I will make it to the end!

@papilloncharity ·
*Sometimes I wonder if we should get used to it, or if it is part of the plan to keep us in line*.

Let me tell you that since we sold the Papillon head office and moved down here, our entire working life has changed Taraz.
No more staff and normal 6:30am rushing every day to open the place and to get everything going. No more dicey travelling at night and crossing red traffic lights to protect ourselves against lurking criminals at the lights. And so many other things, as we worked with the people in a high crime area.
Now it's way more relaxed as we have partnered with existing charities and non-profits with their own staff and I have more leeway to roll our projects out.
One can naturally get used to working every day, but at times it can feel like the old slave system.

*Does this worry you? It worries me*.

Yes indeed, the end of my working life is not far away and I have limited time to get everything in order. The mistake that I made, is that I have never considered it seriously.
The priority of course is Papillon as it has to continue and the human side is okay, as Marian is still young and there are a few other board members that will also keep the projects running, but it's the financial side that I have to secure.
That's why we have established the Endowment fund, as if it is big enough, the interest will keep the projects running.

*Not for crypto*. =)
Remember that my first encounter with a PC was when I was 40+ years old.
Ask me about the technical details of most trades and I will know them very well, but ask me about IT stuff like trades and sales and buys and stakes and all of the "fanagalo" of IT language and I am lost at sea.
I bet that you have never known what type of language "Fanagalo" is. Just so am I with IT language.

For example in fanagalo (fanakalo) I will say; "Hamba tata lo gollowan" (Go and fetch the wheelbarrow) :)

Your comment about having to worry about your card clearing when buying groceries, really hits home with me.

I remember growing up being on reduced lunches (they would reduce the cost of lunch in public schools for poor kids) and using food stamps to buy food.

When I was around 8 I found out the government did not count candy as food as I was buying milk and some bread and had a little left over and I grabbed a candy bar.

I put the RED colored 5 dollar food stamp on the counter and they made me put the candy bar back.

Then shortly after getting out of the military I remember days of having to put things back at the checkout line.

Still to this day I tell my wife my only measure of how well off we are is if I need to worry about how much I spend at the grocery store.

As far as I know, they never did the food-stamp thing in Australia or in Finland (where I am now), but I can imagine that it isn't exactly empowering for anyone to have to use them. I suspect that it likely has an effect on the relationship with money for life, one that might be hard to use to an advantage.

>Still to this day I tell my wife my only measure of how well off we are is if I need to worry about how much I spend at the grocery store.

It is probably a very good indicator and should probably be the basis of the bare minimum.

I can somewhat sympathize. I have a salaried job that pays well for the area in which I live. However, my wife and I had some deferred purchases prior to getting this job. So, we are paying off some major upgrades to our lives. We aren't struggling, financially. However, we could be doing better.

Lately, opportunities have come up for me to make a little extra money. It seems ungrateful for me to turn down the work. Any little extra cash does help us. I think we will have finished paying off some major items this year, which will finally allow us to feel prosperous after five years.

In any case, I feel restless if I am only doing my job and not taking advantage of the offers for side jobs that come my way.

I do look forward to the day when Hive and LeoFinance can provide me with income. But, I still need to build up my stake. The goal is to travel one day and use Hive for income in much less expensive countries, along with our pensions.

>It seems ungrateful for me to turn down the work.

The problem I see with this is that it has no end. I am much the same, so keep taking more and more work until I am overextended and have to scale back or renege on the contract.

>which will finally allow us to feel prosperous after five years.

This will feel good. 2022 is my goal for this :)

>The goal is to travel one day and use Hive for income in much less expensive countries, along with our pensions.

It feels like a dream, but could very well become a reality for many.
