Tomorrow is the last day before the first day back at work and I am still pretty skeptical as to how it is going to go, but the day starts with a doctor's appointment anyway, so it isn't going to be a full day. I actually have a few different medical appointments this week, so it is going to be an easy transition in. After almost two months, I am kind of getting used to the "do nothing" life and wonder what it will be like to get back into my old routine.

![IMG_20210814_204150.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23vhqaP4KZaTbamhQ9zH5F9XCBbAPcg8kGEy82VEU4RKiL5nmwWHypDBvUe3JdqpzScCa.jpg)

My wife is in recruiting and headhunting for a quickly growing company and it is interesting to have discussions about the various roles they are trying to fill. Finding the right person for a position is far harder than many people imagine, but I think if we all looked at the effort that we put in at our own workplaces, we would see at least part of the challenge.

Considering at least most people do their job for an income and not a passion, the chances of them putting in effort for a full day, is pretty slim. When there are specialized positions, it can be very hard to firstly find the necessary skills, then have them have the personality that is suitable to be part of the organization and after ticking all the other boxes, be able to offer them a competitive remuneration package. Not many people do their job for the love of it.

I have had quite a lot of jobs in my life and the vast majority of them have been pretty much solely for the money on offer, which was often, not very much at all. This meant that experience was on offer too, which was lucky, because I felt I have never had enough of that. I think this has meant that I have gained a bit along the way though.

![IMG_20210814_220009.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23tm7G2KP6KgGUdUeSSxLRQa96Lcce4hAkcMFQQaTQH37j4yRW3UsfsngwS7Rt6CCJuK7.jpg)

But, while a job is a major part of life, at dinner tonight and on the drive home, we spent some time talking about what is actually important in life. Yes, most of us (like it or not) need money to live in this society, but what that money buys is possibility, How we use what we receive matters and I think part of the problem for many is that we spend so much energy on the obtaining, that we don't spend enough time on the consideration of our potential possibilities.

It is interesting these days as it seems that a lot of people are looking for some kind of escape from their lives, such as out of economic hardship, yet don't really know what they would do if they did indeed find themselves free. If asked the question "What is your purpose", what would you answer?

It seems difficult for many of us to find meaning in life and I think that we end up defaulting to those suggested to us through society, whether it be a job, a family or doing nothing much at all. Many of us spend the time avoiding thinking about it, while waiting for it to drop into our laps, rather than actively searching.

Sure, sometimes things work out this way with very little effort involved, but I think that when it comes to living a life that we as individuals value, it generally requires effort and experience. We have to experience what we enjoy, as well as what we don't and work out what we are willing to work for. In the case of living a life of flow, it requires not only having a skill, but using that skill to meet a challenge, and the challenge being difficult enough that success isn't guaranteed. This means that sometimes we fail, which means we have met a challenge we couldn't overcome at the time, but it gives us the experience and direction in how we can improve.

Living a life in front of a screen as a consumer requires no skill, but it doesn't mean it can't deliver the satisfaction of having a skill. It is like living a life through a proxy, living vicariously through the skills of others - where we can consume the best of the best and the best of the imagination doing things that we want to do, but will not actively learn how to do.

When I was talking to my wife tonight, she said that often she is too tired to do the things that are important to her, because she has to do the things that she needs to do, for example to earn an income. I think many are in this situation too, but being too tired to do what you love is a pretty good indicator that either priorities are misaligned or, you might not love it that much after all.

There is a reason that more people don't do what they love of course - and that is because it is hard as fuck. It is bullshit when people say "love what you do and you'll never work a day" because, *love what you do and you will work constantly, in the same way that a parent doesn't stop parenting ever, because they live their child. And, it is a hard bloody life. Working is the easy part, the sacrifice of doing what you love is far harder.

Yet, I am not sure if those who aren't working a job are doing what they love either, as many tend to be stuck in some kind of consumer mindset, grazing on what they are fed, waiting for something better to come along. Given *all the time in the world* most of us waste it in the same way that we waste an hour in front of a show we don't enjoy, just because we watched the episode prior and feel that now we have invested, we can't give up.

Now, I don't have any of the answers for you and I barely have answers for myself in regards to the best way about living a life, but I do believe that it isn't through waiting for a life to be delivered, as it already was. We didn't have a choice in our creation, but once born, we start on a journey of discovery of what *our life* is going to be. Sure, we can compare it to the lives of others, but at the end of the day, we are who we are and are capable of what we are capable of.

We might not be destined for greatness, but there must at least be the opportunity available for us to use what we learn to improve the life that we as an individual experiences. Usage isn't a passive act, it is an active application and it is up to us to use what we have available to us, in the way that we choose. Whether we see the light of our potential or stay hidden in the dark from ourselves, is up to us.

Striking a match to light the candle is a choice.

Taraz

<div class="text-justify">Greetings! Reading your post was like watching on a screen some of the many discussions I keep inside my mind. Why should money, well not in itself, but its production, necessarily be the north of our parents' advice or upbringing? They stop nurturing skills that could even result in great talents, they stop nurturing that "curious spark" that guides every step in our lives? In the end, sadly they are right to worry, we must -produce- , because enjoying life turns out to be quite costly, but that does not necessarily imply annulling that desire to enjoy the simplest and most pleasurable things, such as drawing. Apparently we all, or in our majority and in a metaphorical way, turn out to be enclosed in those glass cubicles that you photographed and we eventually go out to live. Thanks for your publication!

This is what I like to hear! :)

I am hoping that in the not too distant future, we are able to change the economy enough, hat we get out of the box earlier and have more opportunity and encouragement to do so.

I don't ever take the experience aspect of working for granted, even when the job sucks. We are products of experience after all and for me the more difficult a job I don't like is, the stronger mentally I get when I decide am going to excel at it

As a kid, I used to clean newly-built apartments before the painters came in. It was a hard job and I did it alone, but the hourly pay was good and excellent for a 12 year old. I sometimes wonder if I could still find some of this work on weekends. A few hours here and there makes a difference financially, plus it is a good place to think.

I too have noticed a lot of people seeking something else, some other career or some other job.

They want to do something else but when asked what would they love to do, they are not sure. They don't have definite answers.

Maybe it's because people see other's business/jobs from the outside only. I have a friend who does animation background VFX something for the local movies.

His life is fun. He plays video games all night while doing his work. Gets to meet and party with some local celebrities and influencers.

But when I stayed with him for a month, he is quite dedicated. And he has to sit in front of computer for 12-14 hours straight when he is on deadline. Workload is sometimes nothing and sometimes back breaking.

People don't get to see this close up, so they only dream about a better lifestyle, or money. And forget to put more efforts and dedication in their own job/business.

Maybe if we learn to enjoy parts of our job, it would make everyone's job interesting, satisfying and more economically viable. I don't know about others but I truly believe that almost any job could be done with more dedication and more passion. And results would be more meaningful๐Ÿ™‚

>Workload is sometimes nothing and sometimes back breaking.

Does he do it freelance? Freelancing can be lucrative, but it can also suck hugely, as there is a lot of inconsistency in the workload. Just think what happened when all of the studios stopped filming for months on end in many places - where does the bread come from? I had this trouble in my own business last year and it still hasn't fully returned to what it was - and then health issues stopped me ramping up.

>Maybe if we learn to enjoy parts of our job, it would make everyone's job interesting, satisfying and more economically viable.

When I work with people looking to shift positions or get promotions, I help them understand that even if the money is good and most of the job is okay, a lot of what has value is grunt work, not glamor. A lot of people in the 90s went into law because of legal TV shows and courtroom dramas - most layers sit at a desk with a pile of papers 95% of the time. many will never see the inside of a courtroom.

> I don't know about others but I truly believe that almost any job could be done with more dedication and more passion.

There is not a moment in our lives that are 100% uninteresting. The most boring work meeting is full of potential points of interest, yet most tune-out of life and wait for something interesting to fall in their laps.

Yepp, he does freelance work, but he is good at what he does, so he almost always have work. Been doing it for 5-6 years now. Plus the boom in video content consumption and all the solo artist trying their hand at youtube etc, wants his help.
So, his work wasn't much affected.

> A lot of people in the 90s went into law because of legal TV shows and courtroom dramas

Lol, true. After watching Suits series and Better call Saul, I thought lawyers have a good lifestyle. TV and social media glamourise careers and lifestyle too much.
Only people who have seen it closely or lived it, knows.

@tarazkp I want to express to you that I enjoy your reflections on daily life.

I am currently self-employed because I also take care of my babies, a 3 year old prince and a 4 month old princess. But in the company where I was working before I could see that, although knowledge and experience are important, attitude is also important, for example, a person with work ethic and interested in learning can do much more for the company than one who has more experience but with bad attitude.

I now have less time for myself, but now I reflect more, I feel that I have worked all my life but I have not been able to enjoy many experiences that I dreamed of when I was about to graduate. It is difficult to find the balance between generating income and having time to enjoy a well deserved vacation.... For now we keep trying. :-)

I agree and the harm that a poor attitude can do in an organization is enormous, if they are also have a personality that can get support.

> It is difficult to find the balance between generating income and having time to enjoy a well deserved vacation.

For sure. I don't know all the details of your life, but hopefully at some point you find the space to enjoy what you have worked for. :)

I remembered a childhood episode when I had drawing skills and my father refused to let me go to an "artistic" school because artists didn't make money, to go to a conventional school and study a "productive" career. Here at HIVE I feel that I am doing part of what I love to do: writing. Very few people can say they love what they do and that's a shame. I like my work. I love it. Another thing: those images are great. I had the feeling that many of us are in a glass cubicle that we can't get out of. Nice weekend. Hugs, @tarazkp

My dad had the same experience with his father. He was painting in secret and earning at 12 years of age painting movie signs. He studied to be a teacher which he was at the age of 16, but it was his artiatic skills that got him out of Malaysia and into Australia. But funnily, he loved being a teacher and did both until into his eighties.

Hive is a brilliant place to explore skills and can help them flourish, if given the time and attention. It is empowering.

Hope you are doing well Nancy

Wow, such an incredible story. So, that' how you have so good work ethic, work with consistency, and don't shy away from hardwork.

All those values and lessons you learned from your dad, such an inspiration๐Ÿ™‚

Good day nice article. Was talking to my friend the other, he needed some advise regarding a job offer he just got. I advised him to go for what he likes so he doesnโ€™t see the job to be stressful. Passion for your job makes everyday seem like a holiday.

No job is 100% great, most have more negative than positive. I find the trick is to make sure that the bits that are positive are enough that the bits that are negative are manageable.
