Not Collected Enough
<div class="text-justify">

After the last week or so, I thought I would sit quietly writing, whilst nursing a gin. We had some fish for dinner, so I could even have a slice of lemon also, which I normally don't do. With this particular gin however, it is okay, as it isn't that great, but is quite sweet. Personally, I think my favorite has been Hendrick's with cucumber - but I am not that fussy. Not like an alcoholic "not fussy", just not that snobby that slight differences really matter all that much to me.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/23uFU9i11tZmFR4xw5Jf9EwCAqoGpLhcWq3Qr6fKmSAZvcN8bgitKXNpaJUvQgP11eYTo.png)

This week hasn't been the greatest, but there has been positive movements, since we found out that while our insurance isn't going to cover us, the heating company will. However, we have had a lot come out of pocket unexpectedly, which has left us a little short and there is more coming that we will have to likely replace now, and send the bills forward.

> Like a new washing machine.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/tarazkp/48Tnv9xefZknruvyhaXtrMHxWKgt1vQAiRGXFEstDkzZRvZizAQbA2Gt43PWh2WDCs.png)

Our washer isn't that old, but since it froze, isn't draining. Thankfully, we didn't run a load through, otherwise it would just be stuck in there, since the door won't open. I don't know much about whitegoods repairs, but I assume there was a little bit of water in the pump that takes the water out and once that froze, it destroyed the part. It might be repairable, but I think it should be replaced. We haven't been able to test the dryer yet.

> Either way, bills for the heating company insurance.

But, it will come out of our pocket first, and it is a little tighter than I had hoped it would be, with still a week until I get paid, and the bills are mounting. Normally, we do have a bit of an emergency fund put aside, but we have used that covering extra expenses and last month, I added extra onto the loan to pay that down faster. It is more of a liquidity problem, but nothing to overly worry about.

However, as my wife was paying the bills and saw her bank account dwindling, the stress was evident. Like it or not, money has an effect on our lives and not having enough at the right times, or having to spend too much at the wrong times, will have an effect. I am not overly concerned at this point, but I think it is good that my wife feels a bit of the pressure right now, because I think at times she doesn't think that much about expenses.

>Well, that is not quite true.

She does, but she doesn't think about the opportunity cost of expenses. She is more of the kind that as long as we have enough to do what she thinks we should, that is fine. But, it doesn't look too far into the future at what might happen later. She definitely doesn't have an investment mindset, even though she knows she should think more about it.

But, I think this is common for many people, where we are more short-term thinkers, so as long as we are able to get what we want and need now, we aren't too concerned with the wants and needs of the future. Essentially, investing is preparing for those future wants and needs, under the assumption that they will arise.

And in general, it is a pretty good call, because we tend to want to "progress" in life and one of the ways we feel we are doing so, is by expanding our footprint, which usually has a cost. For many, it is more material things like a better house, car, or clothing. For others, it might be experience-based, like travel, concerts or some kind of event. However, we are pretty much built to expand, not retract.

>We are collectors.

What we collect can change. It is easy to think about stamps, or cars, or even money - the things that often "enlightened" people will call materialistic, but they are collectors too. Collectors of knowledge, or the feelings that they get from their spirituality. Even the people who give up everything but what they need to survive, are collecting something, even if it is imaginary points they believe they need, for an imaginary afterlife.

>Self-interest.

We are all pretty much self-interested, meaning that we are interested in what we are interested in, even if it comes at the expense of others. We can be self-interested and still add value to others, but there really is very little difference in the mechanics of the process.

>One collects money.
One collects experiences.
One collects notches on the bed post.

Is there really that much of a difference? One is addicted to caffeine, one is addicted to cocaine, one is addicted to serving the God they believe in. No difference, they each get a high of some sort, a feeling of satisfaction, a reprieve from the withdrawal, the longing, the compulsion.

>Relief from the pain of going without.

They say that we should be grateful for what we have, but perhaps the problem is that that we define ourselves by what we don't have, and maybe that is natural. When we "don't have" we look to get, either through desire or need, and it could be that this is a natural part of our humanity. When we don't have food, we are hungry, and will search for food. When there is no one with us, we get lonely, and will search for companionship.

>Maybe not having is what drives us forward.

Of course, if we aren't careful, want turn into need, so we feel that we are missing out, that we must have, that we are compelled. Addicts once again, withdrawals coming in the form of FOMO.

While we are all collectors, I guess we should also consider what we are collecting, and why we are doing so. What is the point of collecting money if it is not to be used? What is the point of collecting knowledge that will never be applied? Or collecting experiences that will never be remembered? What is the point of doing anything, if it doesn't take our species forward in some way, even if that way is negligible?

>Maybe it comes down to intention.

Does it add to the collection, or the collective?

I finished my gin.

It's just plain difficult to lead a good life amidst the current economic suffocation. Luckily, you and your wife are weathering the storm well, I think she's done a good thing standing in for you till your pay arrives. I wish you the best with coping with the situation.

I do often wonder if it's possible to become a Billionaire without some sort of psychological compulsive obsessive disorder. To create situations where you're earning so much money that you, your family and your future generations couldn't possibly spend, usually to the detriment of others.

I personally prefer to save, because I'm not confident we'll have enough for retirement in a couple of decades, but my partner is far more likely to spend on having an enjoyable time now. I do wonder if she remembers all the previous delicious restaurant meals, etc, or is it only the next one that matters? In which case it's not really about the collecting or collection, but the enjoyment of the now.

I don't think so. Or at least, I think it takes a certain kind of person to have that much drive.

>In which case it's not really about the collecting or collection, but the enjoyment of the now.

I think this is part of the collector mindset too. That enjoyment of the now is like collecting "highs" isn't it - always looking for the next hit.

I know it probably doesn't help much, but the pump isn't that hard to replace. Taking the frame off the unit is honestly the hardest part. We had a sock stuck in our pump one time and I had to tear the thing apart to get it out. I didn't know what was causing the problem until I got the whole thing opened up. Hopefully you can get back on track soon. I know the unexpected stuff like this can be hard to cope with at times.

I feel like a lot of these units are built to fall apart, once they are opened up. I will replace it if I have to of course, but if it will be covered by the insurance from the heating company, it is on them.

How the hell did a sock get through there?

It’s certainly annoying but the washer pump is incredibly easy to replace. A lot of them have a panel on the back you can pop off and you have full access to it. Pop the electrical clip off, change the pump and hook it back up. Hopefully they will pay for it all but if they don’t, keep that in your back pocket! Pumps are like 40$ these days.

It feels like these things come as the toughest situations pile up. Hopefully this is the last of the damn curve balls man! Jeez lol.

I know that there are a lot of people who have the wrong mindset when it comes to the future and trying to invest and save something for it. A lot of time and money spent chasing stupid stuff, but I guess we each have our own definition of stupid. I would much rather do something that a friend of mine wouldn’t want to do and them the opposite. I guess that’s the good and unique thing about being human, different tastes for different people.

If they aren't going to cover it, I am going to try and fix it myself. I am good with some things, but whitegoods repair is not one of them - but may as well try, eh?

>It feels like these things come as the toughest situations pile up. Hopefully this is the last of the damn curve balls man! Jeez lol.

I suspect there will be more soon. At least, that seems to be the way it goes.

We each have different tastes, but I wonder where the line is. People say "fight for what you believe in", (as long as the society of the moment accepts it).

I think being a collector and then letting go is kind of a cycle. When both those things we get tired of is when life kind of gets boring and then just becomes harder to live as well. I feel it's a good for emotional health to be a collector of memories. :)

But, even our memories are not collected well - we remember so poorly, adding detail, forgetting fact - making it into a story. So, is it really valuable that we "did it" when we actually won't remember it for what it was?

I was just thinking how alone I felt in the middle of the party, as most of them were thinking of such different ways of living than me. Thanks to Hive I met some similar people. Should we stop drinking? Maybe?

i put myself in your shoes, I just returned from vacation and my washing machine is having problems so it needs to be repaired, tomorrow the technician is coming, in addition to other expenses that have just arisen with my car.

The corrective maintenance collection list started with the budget (money) in contraction, starting January. πŸ€”πŸ«£

It sucks to hear that the machine is having issues and that you had to deal with so many issues. Life sucks and I think times will be rough for at least the next few years. With all the layoffs that I keep hearing about in the news, I think we definitely need to stay positive. In a way, I think we all desire some things and money is just a part of the equation that makes more sense to people. Unless you are part of the top percentage of people who have too much money.

Is there are deadline on when you can claim damages from the heating company? It is good if you can immediately tell a problem like the washing machine. But what if some internal pipes were weakened, and give out some time down the line [I hope it doesn't]? It is good that you have money saved up to cover the initial expenses, hopefully the reimbursement is fast.

Not at this point - but the washing machine has already been earmarked as a potential problem, so hopefully it will be covered.

Even though you only vaguely touched on the border of a few ideas of existentialism I still feel like you might be interested in reading some Ernest Hemingway novels if you haven't already XD

I'm pretty sure there's other existentialist writers but that was the one I remember from English Lit

Sucks that insurance wouldn't cover it (hope they're good for anything else otherwise may as well just drop them as a waste of money) but good that the heating company did.

Good luck getting the washing machine repaired or replaced :S

I have only read "The old man and the sea" a long time ago - I liked it, but I think I wasn't ready to dive into more of the meaning behind it at the time.

The insurance company should cover, even if not our fault - and then fight the heating company. What the fuck is it for otherwise?

I feel like this is why private insurance was pretty much forced over here, there were too many people that were opting out (either self-insuring by trying to make sure they had a massive savings buffer or just assuming/hoping it would always happen to other people and never ever to them) which would cause that entire scheme to collapse in on itself.
