Every time I hear "I don't get out of bed for less than XX amount" I wonder, how many hours the person spends in bed. I guess there are some people who have the luxury to just make demands like that and still get served, but most people I have ever met, just don't. Well, I guess they could demand, but  I don't like their chances of having their demands met.

I have a similar aversion to the statement "work smarter, not harder" because what that is saying is that a person will minimize the amount of work they will do, in order to achieve the same results they are already getting. It is like choosing to salary-cap oneself, which seems like not the way someone should be going. I do get that people should be smarter with the ways they work, but what I have found is that the most effective people don't stop working hard when they find better ways to do things, they just reallocate the saved resources to where they are more effective.

Saving energy on one side, spending the saved energy more effectively on the other. It seems that humans tend to look to save energy more often than investigating what we will do with it. Most of us want more time in our lives, but when we have it, waste it. We want more freedom, but don't think about what that means, how we will apply it, or perhaps most importantly, how we will behave once we have it. 

Like it or not, most of us *freeze* when we are given even a little bit of freedom. I noticed this when I was a kid in art classes. When we had the "freedom" to do what we wanted, most of the kids *drew a blank.* They just couldn't decide on something they wanted and would ask the teacher to give them some guidance. Only a small percentage actually relished the opportunity to *finally* be able to be free.

This type of situation has presented itself many times over the years, especially in the workplace. It has always intrigued me how people don't want to be "told what to do" but when they don't have clarity on what they should be doing, they want rules applied. In the corporate world of organizational bullshit speak, this sets up a system where nothing gets done. Leadership can be vague in their "direction" and say that it is up to individuals to apply it to their role, but the individuals don't know how to apply such vague direction. Each blames the other, because both are missing concrete examples and activities.

Having freedom is a funny paradox, because as soon as a person has it, they are less free than when they were being told what to do, because now their actions belong to them, and they have to take responsibility for the outcomes. Not many people actually like paying the consequences of their actions, because often they are negative. While people like to claim their own prowess for successes, when there is no one to blame for failures, they will look for any other excuse that they can invent to palm blame off in another direction. 

At the end of the day though, we can only live the experience that we have and whether we play an active role or not, whether we work hard, not at all, or somewhere between, no matter what decisions we make, or what circumstances we face, it is us as the individual that has to live it, paying the cost, or getting the gains. Some will choose *not to get out of bed,* and some will choose to *stay out of bed* as much as possible.

Stay in bed long enough, and muscles and mind atrophy and at some point, you aren't worth waking up.
