<div class="text-justify"> After the incident and altercation outside our apartment building last night, I was thinking about a conversation I had with some colleagues only a few days earlier as we drove together. It was about problem drinking statistics and the rate of domestic violence in Finland, two things that seem to go hand in hand. Part of the reason it is so high in Finland is that there is more openness to reporting here than in other places, but the numbers are quite significant regardless. https://i.imgur.com/PujXrf5.jpg Out of my circle of friends, the numbers of people (women) who have been raped, attacked, in abusive relationships and been abused verbally on the street or physically and inappropriately touched in nightclubs is extremely high. In my opinion, there is never an excuse for this kind of behavior. *Never.* We live in a strange world when this kind of behavior is normalized. I had a discussion with a client this morning and she brought up the people she knew directly and this is a common thread in the experience of being in Finland - alcoholism, abuse, depression, suicide and various other negative social behaviors -*everyone knows someone who perpetrates or is a victim of social disorder.* She spoke about the men who go to places like Thailand as sex tourists, and the women who go to places like Tunisia as sex tourists too. But, Finland is of course not alone in this as a country and the only real conclusion that can be ascertained is, people can be weird, messed up and often cruel individuals who are *willing* to inflict suffering upon others or take advantage of economic hardships for their own gratification. *It is a strange world...* One of the things I mentioned with my client is that we have created a world where we encourage victimhood and no matter what the position, there is always support to be found. In the past, the reference and social circles were much smaller and much more connected to the individual and the immediate environment, whereas now they are open to everyone, even strangers at a global level. If a person tried to justify bad behavior in a small group of friends, it would be hard to garner much support, but on Facebook with 1000 "friends", Twitter with ten thousand "unknowns" and Instagram with who knows what, no matter what is said it can attract some level of support and make the person posting feel justified, even if it is met with even more resistance. People will naturally side with the views that confirm their beliefs rather than those that go against and the people that support fringe viewpoints can be very strong supporters as they are likely to hold the same perspective or desire. In the world of the internet where there is a home for every want, it is always possible to "feel supported" and find a community that agrees with a position, no matter what it is. This can silo and echo-chamber perspectives to reverberate and ramp up beliefs and behaviors unchecked and over time, give a very unrealistic view of the world that leans to extremes and polarization. And, because much of it is not in open discourse due to taboos, there is very little tempering of views, not unlike cultural brainwashing. Whatever the percentage of our experience is nature or nurture, we do know that our environment has a profound impact on our behavior and when we live in a society that drives for the support of individual freedoms no matter impact to others, it creates a world of compartmentalization that disconnects behavior from consequence. People feel justified that their view is acceptable. While in a mild sense this might be healthy, many humans are prone to take their pleasures and "rights" to extremes and then cry victim if they get pushed back against. We have engineered a world where people feel they are entitled to act as they please - but be protected from the reaction. It is imbalanced. Taraz [ a Steem original ] </div>

Alcohol is not an excuse for such behavior and in my opinion they need help, but also some severe punishment. Pandering to these people will not help the problem go away and I blame society for being too soft.

I don't understand why people are able to get away with "but I was drunk". In Finland alcoholics get better healthcare than most - the cost must be enormous.

Our society is fragmented and yes there is victimhood that finds compassion in their own fragmented areas. Our environment encourages much of this. A certain amount of it is normal and healthy as long as we do not embrace internet ghettos. We can help support, educate, and heal. I feel supportive groups are good as they serve a purpose for a season. Attitude has much to do with it. In time the environment will reflect the attitude of its dwellers. But it is up to us to reset the balance. Thanks @tarazkp

There are internet ghettos already which I imagine are the places where information goes to die. Low-value, easy to consume junk data.

I find it ironic when the **champions of the working poor, enemies of the greedy rich** find something they disagree with online. If they can identify the author's employer, they'll do everything they can to get him sacked; destroying his livelihood without a second thought. If they discern he's self-employed or retired; there's no easy way to hurt him, so they'll just move on to the next thought criminal. So now the only people who are really free to speak their minds are the rich.

An interesting fact that is made interesting as it contradicts the approved media narrative of the bad man perpetuating violence against women is that women are as likely (some studies suggest more likely) to initiate violence in their personal relationships. Part of what helps skew the narrative is often they are still given a pass with law enforcement/judicial system. Some interesting studies on this (of which there are many more for any interested). https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2968709/ https://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/crime/item/19133-women-more-likely-to-commit-domestic-violence-studies-show We have also seen what feels like an epidemic in recent years with female teachers having sexual contact with students (for which they also seem to get a more lenient interaction from the judicial system). There still seems to be a double standard suggesting young boys/males are "lucky" if such a thing occurs. No entertainment that feelings between sexual partners is often hard enough for adults to deal with, let alone boys maturing into adulthood. Nor the consequences for the young lads if a pregnancy occurs and they are now on the hook for paying their rapist child support for which they are ill equipped to handle. A condemnation of not only dealing with the mental/emotional issues of the sexual encounter, but probably a sentence to lifetime poverty and or jail time for not being able to fulfill their court mandated payments to the adult woman who took advantage of them.

>women who go to places like Tunisia as sex tourists I must be living under a rock, had no idea that happens. Domestic abuse is usually against women, but not always. During the course of our marriage, my first wife developed schizophrenia (which led to the breakdown of our marriage, divorce, and her eventual suicide). She had started having some bizarre behavior but it wasnβt until she assaulted me that I internalized that *sheβs crazy* because Iβm a big guy and she was petite. Luckily I was raised that *itβs never okay to hit a girl*.

>I must be living under a rock, had no idea that happens. When I was in Egypt at a resort city (Hurghada) the amount of 50-60-something women walking around holding hands with early 20s boys was high. If I remember, a little less than 20% of the domestic violence in Finland is women directed against men. That is quite high I think. Either way, none of it is required. Schizophrenia and similar things are somewhat exceptions as there is an illness involved. "Drunk" is never an excuse but is more prevalent. It must of been hard on you living with her in many ways.
