Coco Was Missing for 4 Days - Then She Came Back

Last Sunday, Coco went missing. It started when she had asked for food, so I decided to boil a chicken leg because she loves slurping the soup and is crazy about chicken. She waited patiently in the corner of the room, but eventually got fed up and went out into the garden. When the chicken was ready, I called her, but she didn’t come. Then she disappeared for four whole days.

We searched everywhere. Blu was meowing nonstop, clearly worried and looking for her. The more days passed without any sign of Coco, the harder it was to believe she’d come back. Some said maybe she was taken by an owl or chased by a fox, or worse, lost or hurt.

On Thursday, we went to all the places Coco usually follows me and kept calling her name, hoping she’d hear me and find her way back.

Blu helped too; his loud meows echoed through our usual spots, and he ended up panting with exhaustion.

We returned home without her, feeling heavy-hearted and thinking she might have been taken or worse.

Blu has been anxious every day. Whenever I call “Coco!” he looks around hopefully, then slowly loses hope when she doesn’t appear.

But then, suddenly, while I was in the kitchen, Coco appeared. She slipped through a gap in the partially opened window, looked a little shocked, as if to say, “Is this where I’m supposed to be?” She stood still for a moment, and I managed to snap a photo.

It was the best surprise. I gave her food and treats right away, and she was so hungry.

We think she was chased and got lost, and must have heard me calling her; she found her way home.

Blu was over the moon to see her again.

Today, we all went on our usual walk, and Coco was so happy to be back.

They led me to the den they discovered a few weeks ago. We hung out there for a while and had fun as usual.

What a harrowing experience. I am so glad for you Coco has returned safely. I have been fostering a dog a 20 minute drive away, and last month some of the ladies in the neighborhood offered to take on the care and daily walks I was providing. I was happy to let them step in, as there were three different households, with 4 kids and 5 dogs between them, which enabled Chewy to get some much needed socialization I simply couldn't provide, only being able to spend an hour or so a day with him.

Today I went there and he was gone, the feed bucket and waterer were gone. One of the ladies that had been tending to him called me when she saw I was there doing yardwork and gave me a cock and bull story about him somehow running off - apparently taking his cherished food bucket and waterer with him on the lam. While I am outraged at the theft of the dog, it wasn't my dog that I was fostering, and at least I know he isn't hurt in a ditch somewhere, but is in the care of someone that wants him enough to steal and lie for him.

It's a bitter thing, but at least I don't fear for his health and safety like you did Coco. I expect his owner back in about a month, and despite that I just stepped up to do my best for the dog while the owner was unexpectedly away, I will feel like a terrible failure when I have to tell him his dog has been stolen. There's people you can trust with your life, and people you cannot trust with your dog, and it turns out I have been made the latter, despite my best efforts.

Oh, that is heartbreaking. Sorry to hear that.  It’s really hard to accept that some people you counted on were never worthy of that trust. Sometimes, we act with the belief that others think and care the same way we, but many have the wrong motivations, and some will exploit your goodwill.

You just need to tell the truth to the owner, and hopefully, Chewy will find his way back, just like Coco did.

Honestly, I blame the owner for creating this situation to begin with. My concern was only that the dog he abandoned didn't suffer from their irresponsibility, nor that the property the owner left him at was destroyed by the aptly named Chewy abandoned there. Despite my anger at the owner, I would never have given away his dog, and am even more outraged at the betrayal by them claiming to have principles. I expect Chewy is in better circumstances than I was able to provide him, but the lying thieves have destroyed their reputation with me, and that will reverberate across the small community where I provide services to many of the residents.

Pet thieves do not receive the welcome of families that care about their dogs, and rightly not. At least not from anyone whose opinion matters to me. I recently provided an outdoor kennel for someone with a litter of puppies they're selling there, and those nine pups are going for ~$800 a pop. They were well aware that I was temporarily taking responsibility for Chewy, and that the thieves offered to help. They'll not accept any 'help' from them after they learn of this, and all the dog lovers in the neighborhood visit their pups. I wouldn't want them on my property in this circumstance. IME character earns or loses goodwill, as it should. I may not be able to return Chewy to his owner - but that's his own fault to begin with - and there will be permanent consequences to the conceit and cavalier betrayal of trust the thieves demonstrated, in a close knit community where most people have dogs they love.
