Hello friends, I have been posting in the Hive Garden community for a long time. Now I am ending it with a new post. As we enter the autumn season, the harvest of many vegetables and fruits has begun. Since I live in a high altitude region, we start planting the products in the late spring season, and as such, the harvest season is delayed. The harvest of some products reaches the end of November. One of these products is turnip, which I will talk about in this post.

Sonbahar mevsimine girdiğimiz bu günlerde bir çok sebzenin, meyvenin hasadı başladı. Yüksek rakımlı bir bölgede yaşadığım için ürünlerin ekimine ilkbahar mevsiminin sonlarında başlıyoruz, hal böyle olunca hasat dönemi gecikiyor. Bazı ürünlerin hasadı kasım ayının sonunu buluyor. Bu ürünlerden biri de bu gönderide değineceğim şalgam.*

There are vineyards in 3-4 different places in our garden. Since we had a hot summer, the grapes ripened earlier than in previous years. The grapes are not fully ripe, some of them still need time. Actually, it is better this way. This way, the grape consumption period will be extended.

*Bahçemizde 3-4 farklı yerde üzüm bağı var. Sıcak bir yaz mevsimi geçirdiğimiz için üzümlerin olgunlaşması önceki yıllara göre daha  erken oldu. Üzümler tümden olgunlaşmadı, bir kısmının henüz zamana ihtiyacı var. Aslında böylesi daha iyi. Böylelikle üzüm tüketme dönemi uzamış olacak.*

Grape care is not very difficult. There is pruning in the spring. It does not need much water. It is enough to water for two weeks, sometimes longer. We do not trade grapes. We only consume them fresh. Armenians living here 100 years ago used to make wine from grapes. Apart from that, there are those who dry grapes and consume them in the winter.

*Üzümün bakımı çok zor değil. İlkbahar mevsiminde budama işlemi var. Çok fazla suya ihtiyaç duymaz. İki haftada bazen daha uzun sürede su vermek yeterli. Üzümün ticaretini yapmıyoruz. Sadece yaş haliyle tüketiyoruz. 100 yıl önce buralarda yaşayan Ermeniler üzümden şarap yaparmış. Bunun dışında üzüm kurutup kışın tüketenler var.*

The turnip we planted in early August has grown quite a bit. Its root and stem are not yet the length we would like, so there is still a long time until harvest season. Both the leaves and the stem and root of the turnip are important. My family loves dishes that use turnip, but I am not very interested. Its leaves are pickled and used in dishes. The stem and root are cooked with dried meat. This dish is also loved by many.

*Ağustos ayının başlarında ektiğimiz şalgamın boyu iyice uzadı. Kökü ve gövdesi henüz dilediğimiz boyda değil, bu yüzden hasat mevsimine hala uzun bir süre var. Şalgamın hem yaprakları hem gövdesi, kökü önemli. Ailem şalgamın kullanıldığı yemeklerini çok sever, benim ise pek ilgim yok. Yapraklarının salamurası yapılıp yemeklerde kullanılır. Gövdesi, kökü kurutulmuş et ile birlikte pişirilir. Bu yemeğin de seveni çok.*

Turnip leaves are not at the level we want this year. Most of the leaves are damaged and torn. It is not a big problem if we chop the leaves and pickle them after harvest, but it creates a big problem for those who will trade in it. Nobody will buy turnip leaves that are damaged like this.

*Şalgam yaprakları bu yıl istediğimiz düzeyde değil. Yaprakların büyük kısmı hasar görmüş, parçalanmış halde. Hasat sonrası yaprakları doğrayıp salamurasını yapacağımız çok sorun değil ancak bunun ticaretini yapacaklar için büyük bir sorun oluşturur. Bu şekilde hasar görmüş şalgam yapraklarını kimse almaz.*

The area where we planted turnips did not turn green. This is due entirely to faulty irrigation. The area that did not turn green was not given enough water during planting. Of course, this problem could have been detected immediately at the beginning and the planting process could have been carried out again.

*Şalgam ektiğimiz alanın hepsi yeşermedi. Bu tamamen hatalı sulamadan kaynaklı. Yeşermeyen bölgeye ekim esnasında yeterince can suyu verilmemiş. Tabii bu sorun ilk başlarda hemen tespit edilip yeniden ekim işlemi yapılabilinirdi.*

In short, this year's turnips are not as we wished. Not only are the leaves diseased, but the entire planting area has not turned green.

*Kısacası bu yıl şalgam dilediğimiz şekilde değil. Hem yaprakları hastalıklı hem de ekim alanının tümü yeşermedi.*
