Attempting Los Feliz

I have not been keen to leave Koreatown by myself over the past year. When I do so the experience has been mentally exhausting and this last outing was no exception. I had an unused gift certificate to an art store in Los Feliz so I thought that presented a good excuse to attempt to make my way in the world on my lonesome .

Ubers were upwards of 30 dollars one way so I had no other option but the Metro. The underground was more disgusting than ever; and the glassy stares of it's denizens were dark with hopelessness. LAS public trnsportation has always felt like dodging slow-moving zombies, but post-pandemic it has reached a new level of sadness and horror. Human sick and urine is everywhere ; I avoided the escalator as the handrails were coated with a sticky mass of vile detritus. I managed to find a relatively clean seat unlike my last outing and settled down; comfortable in the notion that I was not going to miss my stop and this was all going to be easy.

I missed my stop. I nodded self-assuredly to myself thinking a certain stop was not mine but it was indeed the one I was supposed to disembark at. I attempted to take the train back, but my brain mixed up again somehow and I let it pass. Not wanting to dodge zombies in the subway any longer I attempted to take a bus as they looked so empty earlier. While waiting a young girl was running back and forth near the bus stop with liquid falling from her mouth. When I entered the bus I did not feel like sitting near people in the current environment so I stood. Only two stops. It was embarrassing that I could barely keep my feet while tough looking women stood next to me casually . I felt so out of touch and privileged.

First I went to Soap Plant; Which houses “ Wacko” and the “ La Luz de Jesus” gallery. I took a shortcut and came upon an encampment lining the street near Soap Plant. Encampments are everywhere in Los Angeles now. There was a huge surge of evictions before the pandemic and eviction moratoriums do not appear to have helped much during as homeless encampments have swelled.

When I enter Wacko any sense of enjoyment feels impossible. I did not want to miss out on seeing some art after coming all this way however.

The first exhibit was some glorious escapism by Ana Bagayan.

Then Guy Colwell-Challenger’ exhibit at the “ La Luz de Jesus” gallery dragged me back to reality. Nice to see art used for a higher purpose.

I went to Blu Rooster to use my gift certificate. I bought some oil pastel pencils because I did not know they existed and a unique black mixed-media pad I them went looking for food.
It was a sad search, as restaurants I had enjoyed a few months ago appeared abandoned. Thankfully “The House of Pies” was still open in all it’s deliciously affordable glory. I had a diet coke and a burger and made this silly little sketch.
