Ancient Roman Amphitheater in Carnuntum, Lower Austria

Carnuntum ist eine ehemalige Römerstadt in Niederösterreich (1–4. Jahrhundert AD), das heute als Freilichtmuseum die römischen Geschichte wiederauferstehen lässt. Sehenswürdigkeiten sind das Heidentor, das wiederaufgebaute römische Stadtviertel, das Amphitheater und das Museum Carnuntum.

Das Amphitheater in Carnuntum wurde Ende des 2. Jahrhunderts AD errichtet und war für etwa 13.000 Besucher ausgelegt, also für damalige Verhältnisse ziemlich groß, würde ich sagen. Die römische Weltstadt an der Außengrenze des Römischen Reichs hatte zum Vergleich damals circa 50.000 Einwohner.

Direkt neben dem Amphitheater gab es auch eine Gladiatorenschule, die erst 2011 entdeckt wurde.

Carnuntum is a former Roman city in Lower Austria (1–4th century AD), which today is an open-air museum reviving Roman history. Sights include the "Heidentor" Pegan Gate, the reconstructed Roman city quarter, the amphitheater and the Carnuntum Museum.

The amphitheater in Carnuntum was built at the end of the 2nd century AD and was designed to hold about 13,000 visitors, quite large by the standards of the time, I would say. The Roman city on the outer border of the Roman Empire had about 50,000 inhabitants at that time.

Right next to the amphitheater there was also a gladiator school, which was only discovered in 2011.

Jetzt mal ganz unter uns: Wer zum Teufel ist je auf die Idee gekommen, ein solches Gatter vor die Ruine eines ehemaligen Amphitheaters zu platschen?
Ein Heidentor habe ich, aus der Zeit, als ich mit Augustus unterwegs war, immer noch so in Erinnerung:

Höchstwahrscheinlich haben nach 1945 die Russen das Original abgebaut und durch dieses „geschmiedete Kunstwerk“ ersetzt. :-)
