## Bitcoin Community Split Over Key Proposal To Add Data [Bitcoin CryptoArt NFT](https://nftshowroom.com/gallery/vikisecrets_crypto_bitcoin-art-nft-21) https://decrypt.co/317071/bitcoin-community-split-over-key-proposal-to-add-data https://x.com/ColeTU/status/1919769008439464335 https://x.com/Excellion/status/1919484628601131218 https://x.com/notgrubles/status/1919399991061151943 https://x.com/TFTC21/status/1921600656651026805 https://x.com/Leishman/status/1921746985129799933 ## English The Bitcoin community is currently discussing a code change to Bitcoin Core that removes the data limit of OP_RETURN operations. The OP_RETURN workaround currently allows up to 80 bytes of arbitrary data to be stored in Bitcoin transactions. Proponents believe that without the limit, Bitcoin could implement more use cases such as NFTs or DeFi on layer 1, and that this would increase the demand for Bitcoin transactions in the long term, which would also benefit miners, as the block reward would steadily decrease and miners would have to live more from the Tx fees in the future. Opponents, on the other hand, fear that with the change Bitcoin could lose its focus on money and payment transactions in favor of NFTs etc. and that transaction fees and network utilization could increase. I think both camps have good arguments, but I don't see the dangers of lifting the data limit as dramatic, as it is already possible to store NFTs on the Bitcoin blockchain with the Taproot and Ordinals Protocol. Even the entire NFT, not just the link. On the other hand, blockchain space is generally extremely expensive and the question is whether it makes sense to integrate even more use cases on Bitcoin, or whether it would not be better to limit oneself to payments, but to do this really well in order to prevent overloading the blockchain. If the demand for Bitcoin transactions increases enormously in the future due to all the upgrades, the community would have to consider new scaling mechanisms such as sharding or layer 2 solutions, which is technically extremely challenging if you want to remain decentralized and secure at the same time. Blockchain trilemma. Ethereum, for example, has not managed to implement a decentralized sharding mechanism in 10 years, even though it was known from the outset that smart contracts are very complex and can easily exceed the capacity of a blockchain. In principle, a single successful crypto game such as CryptoKitties is enough to clog the entire Ethereum network. On the other hand, high Tx fees would prevent such use cases anyway. Proponents think that the market will sort it out and no artificial restrictions should be placed on Bitcoin. Bitcoin is evolving and adopting new use cases. What do you think of the Bitcoin Core proposal to remove the OP_RETURN data limit with the next Bitcoin Core version? Good or bad for Bitcoin?

It would slow things down and increase gas fees down the line. The last thing we need to see is BTC gas fees at $100. If we all want to see more people buying or even using BTC those fees need to stay down. Miners all want more money, they always will. But once you let the genie out of the bottle you can't put it back in!

I don't think the limit should be removed. There are already other chains for NFTs and other uses.
