Eine short-selling Investment-Firma hat schwere Vorwürfe gegenüber D-Wave geäußert, den Quanten-Computer-Pionieren sogar Betrug vorgeworfen.

Tatsache ist, dass die D-Wave Aktie QBTS durch die Decke geht, hat sich seit Jahresanfang verdoppelt, gestern ein Plus von 25%.

D-Wave schafft es alle paar Jahre die Anzahl der qubits zu verdoppeln, sind sehr aggressiv im Marketing und bieten mit "hybriden Lösungen" klassisches IT-Consulting im Bereich Prozess-Optimierungen an.

Kerrisdale Capital kritisiert genau dieses Geschäftsmodell mit den "hybriden Lösungen", das wenig transparent ist. Es entstünde der Eindruck, dass D-Wave bereits real-world Lösungen auf Basis von Quanten-Computern anbiete, und sogar Quantum Supremacy erreicht habe.

Der Verdacht, der im Raum steht, ist jetzt, dass D-Wave die Optimierungs-Algorithmen tatsächlich großteils auf klassischen Computern ausführt und nur aus Marketingzwecken das Label "Quantum Computing" und "Quantum Supremacy" nutzt. D-Wave betreibe sozusagen Gold-Plating mit dem Begriff "Quantum Computing".

Technisch wäre laut heutigem Stand der Ansatz mit Quantum-Annealing gar nicht in der Lage, größere real-world Probleme zu berechnen.

Das würde sich auch mit meinen Recherchen dazu decken, ein Paper aus 2021 ist zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass man mit einem 5000 qubit Quantum-Annealer gerade einmal ein Travelling-Salesman-Problem mit 8 Städten lösen kann. Zum Vergleich, klassische Optimierungsalgorithmen schaffen hingegen TSP-Probleme mit Millionen Städten zu lösen.

In der Praxis wären die Computer von D-Wave trotz tausender qubits gar nicht in der Lage, sinnvolle Use-Cases zu berechnen.

Mittlerweile geht man davon aus, dass man für sinnvolle Quanten-Computer sogar Millionen qubits benötigen würde.

Das Problem ist allerdings, dass Quanten-Computer aus den bereits genannten Gründen (Noise, Decoherence) nicht sehr gut skalieren.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Denkt ihr, es ist etwas Wahres an den Anschuldigungen dran oder handelt die Investmentfirma aus monetären Motiven, um die Aktie unter Druck zu setzen? Ist D-Wave unter oder überbewertet?

## Solving the Traveling Salesman Problem on the D-Wave Quantum Computer

A short-selling investment firm has made serious accusations against D-Wave, even accusing the quantum computer pioneers of fraud.

The fact is that the D-Wave share QBTS is going through the roof, has doubled since the beginning of the year, yesterday a plus of 25%.

D-Wave manages to double the number of qubits every few years, is very aggressive in marketing and offers classic IT consulting in the area of process optimization with “hybrid solutions”.

Kerrisdale Capital criticizes precisely this business model with the “hybrid solutions”, which is not very transparent. It gives the impression that D-Wave already offers real-world solutions based on quantum computers and has even achieved quantum supremacy.

The accusation now is that D-Wave actually runs most of its optimization algorithms on classical computers and only uses the labels “quantum computing” and “quantum supremacy” for marketing purposes. D-Wave is, so to speak, gold-plating with the term “quantum computing”.

According to the current state of the art, the quantum annealing approach would not even be able to calculate larger real-world problems.

This would also coincide with my research on this, a paper from 2021 came to the conclusion that a 5000 qubit quantum annealer can only solve a traveling salesman problem with 8 cities. By comparison, classical optimization algorithms manage to solve TSP problems with millions of cities.

In practice, D-Wave's computers would not even be able to calculate meaningful use cases despite thousands of qubits.

It is now assumed that millions of qubits would be necessary for meaningful quantum computing.

The problem, however, is that quantum computers do not scale very well for the reasons already mentioned  (noise, decoherence).
