Reddit Blackout: free API access and third-party front-ends killed before the IPO. Is Reddit slowly dying?

Reddit hat vor dem IPO den kostenlosen API-Zugang und praktisch alle Front-Ends von Drittanbietern gekillt. Stirbt Reddit damit langsam?

Ähnlich wie Twitter hat Reddit den kostenlosen API-Zugang gekillt und verlangt jetzt astronomische Summen, um einzelne Postings automatisiert auslesen zu können.

Damit sind jetzt nicht nur alternative Front-Ends tot, sondern auch die Moderatoren von Subreddits haben die APIs für die automatisierte Moderation von Postings genutzt.

Als Protest haben die Moderatoren der meisten Subreddits, auch r/Bitcoin, für zwei Tage die Subreddits auf privat geschaltet und damit den Zugang gesperrt. Reddit Blackout.

Denke, dass sich Reddit damit ähnlich wie Twitter selber ins Knie geschossen und bei Entwicklern sehr unbeliebt gemacht hat und es gibt jetzt noch weniger Incentives Reddit zu nutzen.

Verglichen mit anderen Social Media macht es für Content Creators eigentlich keinen Sinn, qualitativ hochwertige Inhalte auf Reddit zu teilen.

Dazu kommt die zweifelhafte Zensur der Reddit-Moderatoren. Eine kleine Gruppe von Usern bestimmt im Prinzip willkürlich, was man auf Reddit posten darf und was nicht.

Mein Account wurde wie berichtet auf r/Bitcoin ohne ersichtlichen Grund shadow-gebanned. Meine Bitcoin-Postings gelangen nicht einmal zur Abstimmung in der Community, sondern wurden bereits im Vorfeld gefiltert.

Habe danach meine Nutzung von Reddit eingeschränkt, es wird nichts mehr gepostet, kommentiert, upgevotet etc.

Ein Grund, warum Reddit und Twitter das machen, ist einerseits neue Einnahmen zu generieren und die exklusive Kontrolle über die Front-Ends zu erlangen, um mehr Werbung ausspielen zu können. An alternativen Front-Ends verdienen Twitter und Reddit nichts.

Was sagt ihr zum Reddit Blackout? Denkt ihr, dass mit der Einstellung des kostenlosen API-Zugang, sich Reddit selbst ins Knie geschossen hat und den Wert der Plattform vor dem IPO gemindert hat?

Reddit killed free API access and virtually all third-party front-ends before its IPO. Is Reddit slowly dying?

Similar to Twitter, Reddit has killed free API access and now charges astronomical sums to be able to automatically read individual postings.

So now not only are alternative front-ends dead, but subreddit moderators have been using the APIs to automate moderation of posts.

In protest, the moderators of most subreddits, including r/Bitcoin, have set the subreddits to private for two days, blocking access. Reddit Blackout.

I think Reddit has shot itself in the knee with this, similar to Twitter, and made itself very unpopular among developers and there are now even fewer incentives to use Reddit.

Compared to other social media, it doesn't really make sense for content creators to share quality content on Reddit.

Add to that the dubious censorship of Reddit moderators. A small group of users basically arbitrarily determines what you can and can't post on Reddit.

My account was shadow-banned on r/Bitcoin for no apparent reason, as reported. My bitcoin postings don't even get to vote in the community, but were filtered beforehand.

Restricted my use of Reddit after that, no more posting, commenting, upvoting etc.

One reason Reddit and Twitter do this is to generate new revenue on the one hand and to gain exclusive control over the front-ends to play out more advertising. Twitter and Reddit do not earn anything from alternative front-ends.

What do you think about the Reddit blackout? Do you think that by discontinuing free API access, Reddit has shot itself in the foot and diminished the value of the platform before the IPO?

It sucks to hear that you got shadow banned but I have heard that it is quite common. At the same time, it's too bad that the people caved in and stopped the blackout. I don't think they are going to do anything about that API access to make it cheaper for people.
