Virtuelle Realität: Wieviel Platz brauche ich zu Hause für VR? Weniger als du denkst 😎

Zwei Dinge haben mich in der Vergangenheit immer davon abgehalten, mir ein VR-Headset zuzulegen. Erstens der Preis (2016 waren VR-Headsets sehr teuer und man brauchte einen Hochleistungs-Gaming-PC, was zusammen mehrere Tausend Euro kostete) und zweitens der Platzbedarf.

Anfängliche VR-Setup-Videos haben empfohlen, Möbel in der Wohnung extra für VR umzustellen und Platz für drei externe Sensoren und die ganzen Kabeln zu schaffen. Das hat mich abgeschreckt und war für viele User ein Showstopper .

### Wieviel Platz braucht VR wirklich?

Seit kurzem teste ich die neue Oculus Quest 2 in meiner kleinen Zwei-Zimmerwohnung/Schlafzimmer und kann euch Entwarnung geben. Man braucht keine externen Sensoren mehr und kann Standalone-VR sogar mit oder ohne PC betreiben.

Und man braucht weniger Platz, als ich ursprünglich dachte.

Konkret kann man die meisten Games im Stehen oder sogar im Sitzen spielen, wobei sich stehend natürlicher/immersiver anfühlt.

Als Faustregel würde ich sagen man braucht circa eine ein mal ein Meter große Standfläche, was jetzt nicht so dramatisch ist.

Wichtiger als die Standfläche ist allerdings, dass man Armfreiheit nach allen Richtungen hat, da man die Arme sehr viel bewegt und dabei nicht unabsichtlich den Monitor, Lampe oder Möbel umstoßen oder sich verletzen möchte.

Grundsätzlich ist es aber natürlich so, je mehr Platz man hat, desto besser, da man sich dann auch natürlicher fortbewegen kann und nicht immer Angst haben muss, irgendwo anzustoßen.

Aber wie gesagt, man könnte VR sogar in einer kleinen japanischen Wohnung betreiben, solange man genügend Armfreiheit hat.

Virtual reality: How much space do I need at home for VR? Less than you think 😎

Two things have always kept me from getting a VR headset in the past. First, the price (in 2016 VR headsets were very expensive and you needed a high performance gaming PC, which together added up to several thousand Euros) and second, the space requirements.

Initial VR setup videos recommended rearranging furniture in your home specifically for VR and making room for three external sensors and all the cables. I was really put off by that. This was a showstopper for many users.

### How much space does VR really need?

I recently started testing the new Oculus Quest 2 in my small two-bedroom apartment and can give you the all-clear. You no longer need external sensors and can even run standalone VR with or without a PC.

And you need less space than I originally thought.

Specifically, you can play most games standing up or even sitting down, though standing feels more natural/immersive.

As a rule of thumb, I'd say you need about a 1 by 1 meter footprint, which isn't that dramatic.

More important than the footprint, however, is that you have arm room/clearance in all directions, since you move your arms a lot and don't want to accidentally knock over the monitor, lamp, or furniture or injure yourself.

Basically, the more space you have, the better, because you can move more naturally and don't always have to be afraid of bumping into something.

But as I said, you could even run VR in a small Japanese apartment as long as you have enough arm clearance.
