DeepSeek hat ein Open-Source-LLM veröffentlicht, das an das Niveau von OpenAI GPT o1 herankommt, teilweise sogar übertrifft und viel weniger Rechenleistung/GPUs sowohl für das Training aber vor allem im Betrieb benötigt.

Das hat die USA in Schrecken versetzt und zu einer Korrektur der Nvidia-Aktie und des Nasdaq geführt.

China hat es trotz Sanktionen geschafft, OpenAI und die Closed-Source-KI-Industrie alt aussehen zu lassen.

Wobei man fairerweise aber sagen muss, dass auch Google mit Gemini Flash bereits effiziente, kleinere KI-Modelle anbietet, die von den Kosten und Performance auf dem Niveau von DeepSeek liegen sollen.

Seit Montag hat sich Nvidia aber wieder etwas erholt und liegt jetzt im 5-Tage Trend bei -8.4%.

Der Unterschied ist aber, dass DeepSeek aus China stammt und angeblich mit viel weniger GPUs/KI-Chips ausgekommen ist als OpenAI. 6 Millionen Dollar statt Zig Milliarden für das Training des Modells.

Dazu kommen die globalen KI-Chip/GPU Export-Beschränkungen der USA, die noch von Biden eingeführt wurden und die weltweite Distribution von KI-Chips (Nivida GPUs) begrenzen soll. US-Cloud-Anbieter sollen damit weltweit eine Art Monopolstellung bei KI-Rechenleistung erhalten und sichern.

China hat mit DeepSeek diese Pläne jetzt öffentlichkeitswirksam konterkariert, wobei man aber nicht genau weiß, wieviel Compute DeepSeek wirklich für das Training des Foundation-Modells V3 und R1 benötigt hat. Es gibt auch Spekulationen, dass China in Wirklichkeit viel mehr Ressourcen und H100-Chips in das KI-Startup gesteckt hat als öffentlich bekannt.

Jedenfalls wirkt sich der DeepSeek-Moment aber auch die KI-Export-Beschränkungen negativ auf das Wachstum von Nvidia aus. Es wird damit gerechnet, dass auf Grund der aktuellen Entwicklung weit weniger Chips benötigt (und exportiert) werden als gedacht.

Auf der anderen Seite wird selbst mit effizienteren Modellen der Bedarf an GPUs wohl auch in den nächsten Jahren weiter steigen und vielleicht sogar zu noch mehr Nachfrage führen. Jevons Paradoxon. Technischer Fortschritt führt letztendlich zu einer noch größeren Nutzung des Rohstoffs (GPUs).

What crashed Nvidia (NVDA)? DeepSeek or the US AI chip export restrictions/sanctions?

DeepSeek has released an open source LLM that comes close to the level of OpenAI GPT o1, in some tests even surpassing it and requires much less compute/GPUs both for training but especially in operation.

This has shocked the US and led to a correction in Nvidia shares and the Nasdaq.

Despite sanctions, China has managed to make OpenAI and the closed-source AI industry look old.

However, it is fair to say that Google already offers efficient, smaller AI models with Gemini Flash, which are said to be on a par with DeepSeek in terms of cost and performance.

Since Monday, however, Nvidia has recovered somewhat and is now at -8.4% in the 5-day trend.

The difference, however, is that DeepSeek comes from China and allegedly made do with far fewer GPUs/AI chips than OpenAI. Investing 6 million dollars instead of tens of billions for training the model.

In addition, there are the global AI chip/GPU export restrictions of the US, which were introduced by Biden and are intended to limit the worldwide distribution of AI chips (Nivida GPUs). US cloud providers are thus to maintain and secure a kind of monopoly position in AI computing power worldwide.

China has now publicly countered these plans with DeepSeek, although it is not known exactly how much compute DeepSeek really needed to train the Foundation model V3 and R1. There is also speculation that China has actually invested far more resources and H100 chips in the AI start-up than is publicly known.

In any case, the DeepSeek moment but also the AI export restrictions are having a negative impact on Nvidia's growth. It is expected that far fewer chips will be needed (and exported) than expected due to current developments.

On the other hand, even with more efficient models, the need for GPUs will probably continue to increase in the coming years and perhaps even lead to even more demand. Jevon's paradox. Technological progress ultimately leads to even greater use of the resources (GPUs).
