USAID ist ein staatliche Behörde, die 1961 von JFK gegründet wurde und auf der ganzen Welt Projekte finanziert. Auf Deutsch würde man es vermutlich euphemistisch "Entwicklungshilfe" nennen, USAID steht für US Agency for International Development.

Wie bei allen staatlichen Subventionen wird vermutlich neben Sinnvollem auch viel Skurriles gefördert, wobei das wie immer im Auge des Betrachters liegt.

Elon Musks DOGE hat jetzt die gesamte USAID-Finanzierung eingefroren, obwohl das ein Gericht wieder teilweise aufgehoben hat, und durchleuchtet die Agentur, die eine der größten derartigen weltweit mit einem Budget von 50 Milliarden Dollar ist.

DOGE wirft USAID unter anderem vor, das Bio-Lab in Wuhan co-finanziert zu haben, fragwürdige Diversity-Programme in anderen Ländern zu betreiben und US-Propaganda-Medien auf der ganzen Welt zu finanzieren, allen voran nennt Musk Politico, die sich im Moment im Kriegszustand gegen Trump und Musk befinden. Das beruht wohl auf Gegenseitigkeit. Fact-Checker bestreiten, dass Politico wesentlich von USAID finanziert wurde.

Auf der anderen Seite wird es sicher auch sinnvolle Projekte geben, Gesundheits-Initiativen in Südafrika, Kampf gegen AIDS, oder nachhaltige Landwirtschaft in Südost-Asien zu fördern.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Findet ihr die gesamte Einfrierung oder einen möglichen Shutdown von USAID gerechtfertigt? Wie kann man verhindern, dass derartige Agenturen für politische Agenden missbraucht werden oder ist das in Wirklichkeit sowieso die Kernaufgabe von solchen Initiativen?

USAID is a government agency that was founded by JFK in 1961 and finances projects all over the world. In German it would probably be euphemistically called “Entwicklungshilfe”, USAID stands for US Agency for International Development.

As with all government subsidies, a lot of bizarre things are probably funded alongside useful ones, although as always, that is in the eye of the beholder.

Elon Musk's DOGE has now frozen all USAID funding, although this has been partially overturned by a court, and is scrutinizing the agency, which is one of the largest of its kind in the world with a budget of 50 billion dollars.

DOGE accuses USAID of co-financing the bio lab in Wuhan, running questionable diversity programs in other countries and funding US propaganda media around the world, most notably Politico called out by Musk, which is currently in a state of war against Trump and Musk. The feeling is probably mutual. Fact-checkers deny that Politico was substantially funded by USAID.

On the other hand, there will certainly also be meaningful projects to promote health initiatives in South Africa, the fight against AIDS, or sustainable agriculture in Southeast Asia.
