There was no need to travel far for the invitations to today's Jazz-Matinée, as all the artists come from a region that I have made my home. Nevertheless, one or two national borders had to be crossed, as in 1991 ruthless, nationalistic egotists came to the conclusion that the common house ‘Yugoslavia’ had to be torn down. Each of them insisted on their hut instead, where they could cook their own porridge. Nevertheless, good musicians do not accept national borders. Musicians come together everywhere and do what pleases every ear.

> Für die Einladungen zur heutigen Jazz-Matinee bedurfte es keiner weiten Wege, da alle Künstler aus einer Region stammen, die ich zu meiner Heimat gemacht habe. Und dennoch musste die eine oder andere Landesgrenze überquert werden, da 1991 rücksichtslose, nationalistische Egoisten zur der Überzeugung gelangten, das gemeinsame Haus **»Jugoslawien«** müsse abgerissen werden. Stattdessen bestand jeder auf seine eigenständige Hütte, in der der eigene Brei gekocht werden konnte. Doch gute Musiker akzeptieren keine Landesgrenzen. Sie finden überall zusammen und tun das, was jedes Ohr erfreut.

# Vlatko Stefanovski – Whether with or without electric power. As long as it's a guitar!
It is challenging to categorise **Macedonia**n guitarist Vlatko Stefanovski into a specific musical style. Originally, it all started with rock “n” roll. He recorded 13 albums with the band **Leb i Sol**, among others, before presenting his first own work called **‘Zodiac**’ together with Bodan Arsovski in 1990. Afterwards, he recorded **‘Cowboys and Indians’ with Goran Bregović**. He composed the **Gypsy Song** for the film **‘Gypsy Magic’**, which became a big hit in the Balkans. Via **Joni Mitchel**l, Stefanovski became increasingly interested in jazz, which ultimately brought him together with **Allan Holdsworth and Jan Akkerman**.

# Miroslav Tadić – Whether classical, blues or jazz - the guitar is always there
The **Bosnian** guitarist Miroslav Tadić was trained in classical guitar in Yugoslavia and Italy. It was only after his studies at **CalArts in Los Angeles** that he began to explore other musical styles. Incidentally, Tadić still teaches at this American training centre today. The trade magazine **Guitar Playe**r lists him as one of the thirty most radical and individualistic guitarists in the world. It is not without reason that colleagues such as **Jack Bruce, David Torn, Howard Levy and Markus Stockhause**n invite him into their recording studios. Considering their Balkan roots, who can be surprised that Tadić and Stefanovski form a dream duo?
Der **bosnische** Gitarrist Miroslav Tadić wurde in Jugoslawien und Italien an der klassischen Gitarre ausgebildet. Erst nach seinem Studium an der **CalArts in Los Angeles** näherte er sich auch anderen musikalischen Stilrichtungen. Übrigens unterrichtet Tadić noch heute an jener amerikanischen Ausbildungsstätte. Das Fachmagazin **Guitar Player** listet ihn unter den dreißig radikalsten und am meisten individualistischen Gitarristen der Welt. Nicht ohne Grund bitten ihn Kollegen wie **Jack Bruce, David Torn, Howard Levy oder Markus Stockhausen** in die Tonstudios. Wen kann es da verwundern, wenn man die Balkanwurzeln bedenkt, dass Tadić und Stefanovski ein Traum-Duo bilden?

# Vasko Atanasovski – Whether composing or playing - a boundless dedication
Whether it's the saxophone, the flute or the as yet unmarked sheet of music, there is hardly a more versatile and creative composer and musician than the **Slovenian** Vasko Atanasovski. Jazz, rock, classical or traditional - there is no terrain in which he is not instantly at home. His 13 albums produced to date, all of which have been praised by audiences and critics at home and abroad, are the best proof of this. Whether for dance, puppetry or theatre, whether for choirs, ensembles, orchestras or soloists - Atansovski's compositions are in demand everywhere. The list of collaborations reads like a who's who of the music world. And who should not be missing? Vlatko Stefanovski!

> Ist es das Saxofon, die Flöte oder das noch unbeschriftete Notenblatt, es gibt kaum einen vielseitigeren und kreativeren Komponisten und Musiker, als der **Slowen**e Vasko Atanasovski. Jazz, Rock, Klassik oder das Traditionelle – kein Terrain, auf dem er sich nicht augenblicklich bestens zurechtfindet. Als bester Beweis dienen seine bislang 13 produzierten Alben, die allesamt vom Publikum und der Kritik im In- und Ausland gelobt wurden. Ob für den Tanz, das Puppenspiel oder das Theater, ob für Chöre, Ensembles, Orchester oder Solisten – Atansovskis Kompositionen sind überall gefragt. # Rade Šerbedžija – The fine -minded man with the distinctive voice
To describe Rade Šerbedžija as a member of the jazz family would be far too bold an endeavour. Rather, I have asked the **Croatian with Slovenian-Macedonian** roots on stage today because he has taken to the microphone on various occasions as a guest of the musicians listed above and (although he is better known as a film and theatre actor) has not cut a bad figure in the process.

Vielmehr habe ich den **Kroaten mit den slowenisch-mazedonischen** Wurzeln heute auf die Bühne gebeten, weil er zu den verschiedensten Anlässen als Gast bei den oben aufgeführten Musikern zum Mikrofon griff und dabei (obwohl eher als Film- und Theaterschauspieler bekannt) keine schlechte Figur abgab.
