"Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs"

First mentioned in the 12th century, the Confrérie des Pénitents Noirs (Brotherhood of the Black Penitents) was a French religious order devoted to to a number of pious exercises such as aid to prisoners (especially those condemned to death), the sick, and the insane. Most notably, they took care of proper Christian burials of the dead. Members of the Black Penitents would hold monthly processions around town, covered in black poncho-style outfits and cloaked with black hoods.

This particular chapel of the Black Penitents dates from the 15th century and is one of the more prominent places of Collonges-la-Rouge, the charming village in the Limousin region of France. The chapel was used chiefly in the burial of the dead through the  Brotherhood, hence its name. Accordingly, the decoration of the building is rather sparse.

_Die Confrérie des Pénitents Noirs (Bruderschaft der schwarzen Büßer), die erstmals im 12. Jahrhundert erwähnt wurde, war ein französischer religiöser Orden, der sich einer Reihe von frommen Aufgaben widmete, u.a. der Hilfe für Gefangene (insbesondere für zum Tode Verurteilte), Kranke und Geisteskranke. Vor allem kümmerten sie sich um die ordnungsgemäße christliche Bestattung der Toten. Die Mitglieder der Schwarzen Büßer hielten monatliche Prozessionen durch das Dorf ab, wobei sie in eine Art schwarze Ponchos gekleidet und mit schwarzen Kapuzen verhüllt waren._

_Diese Kapelle der Schwarzen Büßer stammt aus dem 15. Jahrhundert und ist eine der markantesten Sehenswürdigkeiten von Collonges-la-Rouge, dem reizvollen Dorf in der Region Limousin in Frankreich. Die Kapelle diente vor allem der Bestattung der Toten durch die Bruderschaft, daher ihr Name. Dementsprechend ist die Dekoration des Gebäudes eher spärlich._
