Today I want to take you on a virtual tour of an incredibly beautiful and interesting museum, namely the Museum of Troy, which is located in the city of Canakkale in Turkey. With the opening of the new museum, right next to Troy, visitors now have the opportunity to get much more information about this archaeological site and to see its history in a much wider range. Let's get started.*** ***This is what Troy represented in the first period after its creation.***   ---------------------------------------- ***The building has four floors plus a terrace and the artifacts are arranged chronologically by period, as the layers were revealed during the excavation of the site. There are also exhibits on display outside, despite the large exhibition space of 2,000 square meters.***   ------------------------- ***The entrance to the Troy museum is reached by a large ramp, with concrete walls with niches in which small exhibits are located. The ramp takes visitors to the underground floor. This level also houses exhibition spaces and a museum shop.***    ------------------------- ***We are now on floor minus 1. The tour of the museum starts from this level, where the geography of the Troad region is explained. This floor offers information about the ancient cities of the Troad area: Assos, Bozcaada (Tenedos), Parion, Alexandria Troad, Apollo Smyntaion, Lampsakos, Timbria, Tavolia and Gokceada (Imbros).***  ------------------ ***Amphorae from the Byzantine period.***  ------------------ ***Many finds on display in the museum come from two Turkish islands in the Aegean Sea. Tenedos (Bozkaada) is an island in the Aegean Sea mentioned in the Iliad. The biggest attraction on the island of Bozjaada (ancient Tenedos) is the exhibits found in the local necropolis during rescue excavations.***  ----------------------------- ***This red-figure pottery from the 5th and 4th centuries BC was also discovered on the island. and figurines of the goddess Cybele from the 5th century BC. Additionally, artifacts from the necropolis include stone tombs, sarcophagi, and urns. Burial gifts from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period shed light on the cultural interactions between the inhabitants of Tenedos and other regions, including mainland Greece and Asia Minor.***  ------------------- ***One of the most impressive and exquisite exhibits displayed on the lowest level of the museum is the so-called Altıkulaç sarcophagus. It was found in the Chingenetepe tomb in a round vaulted tomb in the village of Altkulak. The village is located near the city of Chan in the eastern Troad, in the valley of the river Granicus. The sarcophagus most likely dates from the first quarter of the 4th century BC, when the region was under Persian control.When Persia dominated the Troad, rich landowners were given lavish funerals. The more and higher mounds there were in the estate, it meant a higher status of the family. The mounds were raised so that they could be seen from afar and were filled with gifts that were later looted by treasure hunters. You can see how the lid of the sarcophagus has been broken off, but the most important thing remains - the superb work of the sculptor of this sarcophagus***   ------------------ ***Ceramic sculpture from the Hellenistic period/Late Greek/, style called Tanagra. Such sculptures are also found throughout the territory of Dobrudja.***  ---------------------- ***This fine amphora is from Parion. Parion is a Greek city located on the border of the historical lands of Troad and Mysia. In ancient times, Parion functioned as an important port for the surrounding settlements. The origin of the city's name has not yet been scientifically explained, but there is a legend that it comes from Paris, the son of the Trojan king Priam.The city was founded probably about 3000 years ago as a colony of settlers from Eretria (a Greek polis on the island of Euboea), Miletus and the island of Paros in the Aegean Sea. Parion was a member of the Delian League. The city had defense towers and at least four temples. During the Hellenistic period, it fell under the control of Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's diadoches. After his death, the city was taken by the Attalids of Pergamon. As part of the Kingdom of Pergamon, Parion was handed over to the Romans by the will of Attalos III in 133 BC***    ----------------------- ***The ancient coins of Parion testify to its great importance and modern minting facilities. The most interesting image seen on coins from the Hellenistic era is the coat of arms. It depicts the so-called gorgoneion, i.e. the head of the Gorgon.***  ----------------------------------- ***Another ancient city from the region, with a representation in the museum, is Pegeia. In May 334 BC, at the Battle of the Granic River, very close to modern Biga (Pegea), the army of Alexander the Great defeated the Persian forces, opening the way for the Macedonians to conquer Asia Minor.***    ------------- ***The first settlements in the Troad area dating from the Neolithic period, i.e. 8000 BC, are also represented in the Troy Museum. The first of these is known as Koshkuntepe (Bademli), located in the southwest corner of the Troad. This significant Neolithic settlement was located on a natural hill above the coast. Excavations show that the earliest inhabitants of the site lived around 6000 BC and made a living by fishing and animal husbandry.***  ------------------------- ***The historic site of Alacaligöl is located about four kilometers west of Troy. Some researchers speculate that this low-lying area was a convenient site for a port of Troy. Excavations carried out since 2000 have revealed the presence of a prehistoric settlement dating from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods.***  ---------------------------- ***And this is how amphorae, pitchers and barduches were made. Perhaps the presence of a woman with glasses on the first floor of the museum wants to show that the craft is not forgotten.***  ----------------------------- ***The Besik-Sivritepe Mound is among the most famous of the Troad region. It was long believed to be the monumental tomb of one of the heroes of the Trojan War, possibly Achilles himself, and was therefore named Achilleion. It was studied in a rather barbaric way by Schliemann and some of the exhibits were destroyed. Many pottery vessels were found.***   -------------------------- ***Let's go up to the second floor now. He is extremely interesting! The exhibits from the Troy layers are grouped into six categories representing Troy I, II, III, IV-V, VI, and VII. These layers and stages of the city's development are described in chronological order, with Troy II, VI and VII being particularly important as the most prominent stages of the ancient city.***  -------------------- ***The exhibition on this level also offers a glimpse into the realities of other cities of the Troad during the Roman period. The artifacts come from Alexandria Troad, a port city that controlled sea traffic in the area. A marble pedestal with an inscription mentioning the emperor Hadrian comes from Parion, a city declared privileged by Octavian Augustus. The most famous artifacts from the Roman Ilion period are the sculptures documenting the city's importance to the Roman emperors. Here is the head of the emperor Augustus, discovered in the excavations of Troy. The most beautiful exhibit is the larger than life statues of Emperor Hadrian in cuirass found in the Odeon of Troy.***   ---------------------------- ***Here is the exquisitely crafted sarcophagus of Polyxena. It was Polyxena who revealed the secret of Achilles' vulnerable heel to her brothers Paris and Deiphobus. They stalked Achilles and shot him right there with an arrow. At the end of the Trojan War, the ghost of Achilles appeared to the Greeks to demand the human sacrifice of Polyxena to calm the wind needed to sail back to Greece. Polyxena was to be killed at the foot of Achilles' tomb. She wished to die as a sacrifice to Achilles rather than live as a slave. She refused to beg for mercy and died bravely when Achilles' son Neoptolemus cut her throat.***     --------------------- ***Explore more interesting, exquisitely crafted finds from Troy and the surrounding area while I decide how to complete the presentation of the vast museum collection.***     Well, that was my account of Troy.
