This week, after two medical appointments, I very quickly realised two situations that I thought would still be somewhat far from my reality. Clearly, as my fifth decade approaches, the changes, both physical and intellectual, are also accumulating and becoming more and more noticeable and less possible to ignore or relativise.

And where am I in my life? No-one can really say, except the person who makes the decision to end it. Not that I want to live forever, but being aware of my ageing process, and insofar as I haven't established a family (I'm not married, nor do I have children (adopted or biological)), the inevitable awareness, and in a way, the fear of an end is approaching. 

Society doesn't prepare us for this. It's a process that each person has to go through, and you may even have some help, or even guidance, but what really changes is within our being. The way we look at ourselves in the mirror, the way we set our goals and our actions. 

What if something happens that makes it impossible for us to communicate with the outside world? One of the nightmares that terrified me the most when I was younger was being trapped in a body, unable to move a muscle. My face, washed of any expression, would just stare at what was placed in front of it, without even being able to sketch a reaction to what was going on inside. A bit like Metallica's ‘One’ music video. 

In this music video, inspired by the film ‘Johnny Got His Gun’, the American rock band portrays the desperation of a soldier who was seriously injured when he was hit by a landmine. In the same film, the dismembered soldier, unable to communicate with the outside world, attempts the impossible... to communicate.

Without going to that extreme, my fear comes not from such an extreme situation, but from old age preventing me from doing what I now consider to be normal. Will I be able to face the coming decades? Will medicine be able to provide comfort and minimise the physical or mental limitations that I will inevitably accumulate in the coming years? 

And will there really be a line, beyond the inevitable line at the end of life? I don't want to change it. I won't be happy about having to decide when nothing more needs to be done to maintain a shell that is nothing more than an accumulation of matter that the earth will return as ‘clay’ so that it can generate new forms.

I apologise for the somewhat sombre tone of my reflection today. I know the topic isn't to many of your liking, but I think it was important for me to make this reflection.

Esta semana depois de duas consultas médicas, apercebi-me muito rapidamente de duas situações que eu pensava que ainda estariam algo longe da minha realidade. De uma forma clara, e à medida que a minha quinta década se aproxima, a alterações quer físicas quer intelectuais também se vão acumulando e se vão tornando cada vez mais notórias e menos possíveis de ignorar ou de relativizar.

E em que ponto da minha vida estou? Ninguém o consegue dizer, na verdade, excepto quem toma a decisão de terminar com a mesma. Não que deseje que eu viva para sempre, mas tomando consciência do meu processo de envelhecimento, e na medida em que eu não tenha estabelecido uma família (não sou casado, nem tenho filhos (adoptivos ou biológicos), a inevitável consciência, e de certa forma, o receio de um fim aproxima-se. 

A sociedade não nos preparar para tal. É um processo que cada um tem  que o fazer, e poderá até ter alguma ajuda, ou mesmo orientação, mas o que facto muda é no seio do nosso ser. Da nossa forma como nos encaramos ao espelho, da forma como estabelecemos os nossos objectivos e as nossas acções.

E se algo acontece que nos impossibilita de poder comunicar com o exterior? Um dos pesadelos que mais me aterrou quando eu era mais jovem, era o de ficar aprisionado num corpo, incapaz de mover qualquer músculo. A meu rosto lavado de qualquer expressão, apenas olhava para o que lhe era colocado à frente, sem sequer poder esboçar uma reacção ao que se passava no meu interior. Um pouco à semelhança do que do videoclip "One" dos Metallica. 

Nesse videoclipe, inspirado no filme "Johnny Got His Gun", o grupo Rock americano retrata o desespero de um soldado que ficou gravemente ferido quando atingido por uma mina terrestre. Nesse mesmo filme, o soldado que ficou desmembrado, sem possibilidade de comunicar com o exterior, tenta o impossível... conseguir comunicar.

Não levando a esse extremo, o meu receio advém não de uma situação tão extremada, mas em que a velhice me impeça de fazer o que eu hoje considero como normal. Terei eu capacidade de enfrentar as próximas décadas? Será que a medicina conseguirá proporcionar conforto e minimizar as limitações físicas ou mentais que acumularei inevitavelmente nos próximos tempos?  

E será que existirá de facto uma linha, para além da linha inevitável do fim da vida? Não a quererei mudar. Não terei qualquer gosto em ter que decidir quando já não deve ser feito mais nada para manter um invólucro que nada mais é do que um acumular de matéria que a terra devolverá o "barro" para que possa gerar novas formas.

Desculpem o tom um pouco sombrio desta minha reflexão de hoje. Sei que o tema não é do agrado de muito de vós, mas acho que foi importante para mim fazer esta reflexão.
