In 1947, the British Empire partitioned India into India & Pakistan. Pakistan's East was separated by India from its West. It was not only India that divided the East & West Pakistan. The East was Bengali, the West was Punjabi & Urdu. The glue of a common religion was not adhesive enough to keep the two wings of Pakistan together. Mid-wifed by India, the east wing of Pakistan became the nation of Bangladesh in 1971.

Yahya descended from Nāder Shah, the 18th century Persian conqueror of Delhi, graduated first in his class from the Indian Military Academy at Dehra Dun.
