+%0A%0Ahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project%0A%0ARetrieved: 12 September 2017%0AArchive: https://archive.is/qhOef%0A%09%0AManhattan Project%0A%09%0A%3EThis article is about the atomic bomb project. For other uses, see%C2%A0Manhattan Project (disambiguation).%0A%3E%09%0A%3EThe%C2%A0Manhattan Project%C2%A0was a research and development undertaking during%C2%A0World War II%C2%A0that produced the first%C2%A0nuclear weapons. It was led by the%C2%A0United States%C2%A0with the support of the%C2%A0United Kingdom%C2%A0and%C2%A0Canada. From 1942 to 1946, the project was under the direction of%C2%A0Major General%C2%A0Leslie Groves%C2%A0of the%C2%A0U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Nuclear physicist%C2%A0Robert Oppenheimer%C2%A0was the director of the%C2%A0Los Alamos Laboratory%C2%A0that designed the actual bombs. The Army component of the project was designated the%C2%A0Manhattan District; %22Manhattan%22 gradually superseded the official codename,%C2%A0Development of Substitute Materials, for the entire project. Along the way, the project absorbed its earlier British counterpart,%C2%A0Tube Alloys. The Manhattan Project began modestly in 1939, but grew to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly US $2%C2%A0billion (about $27%C2%A0billion in 2016%5B1%5D%C2%A0dollars). Over 90%25 of the cost was for building factories and to produce%C2%A0fissile material, with less than 10%25 for development and production of the weapons. Research and production took place at more than 30 sites across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.%0A%3E%09%0A%3ETwo types of atomic bombs were developed concurrently during the war: a relatively simple%C2%A0gun-type fission weapon%C2%A0and a more complex%C2%A0implosion-type nuclear weapon. The%C2%A0Thin Man%C2%A0gun-type design proved impractical to use with%C2%A0plutonium%C2%A0so a simpler gun-type called%C2%A0Little Boy%C2%A0was developed that used%C2%A0uranium-235, an%C2%A0isotope%C2%A0that makes up only 0.7 percent of natural uranium. Chemically identical to the most common isotope,%C2%A0uranium-238, and with almost the same mass, it proved difficult to separate the two. Three methods were employed for%C2%A0uranium enrichment:%C2%A0electromagnetic,%C2%A0gaseous%C2%A0and%C2%A0thermal. Most of this work was performed at the%C2%A0Clinton Engineer Works%C2%A0at%C2%A0Oak Ridge, Tennessee.%0A%3E%09%0A%3EIn parallel with the work on uranium was an effort to produce plutonium. After the feasibility of the world's%C2%A0first artificial nuclear reactor%C2%A0was demonstrated in Chicago at the%C2%A0Metallurgical Laboratory, it designed the%C2%A0X-10 Graphite Reactor%C2%A0at Oak Ridge and the production reactors in%C2%A0Hanford, Washington, in which uranium was irradiated and%C2%A0transmuted%C2%A0into plutonium. The plutonium was then chemically separated from the uranium. The%C2%A0Fat Man%C2%A0implosion-type weapon was developed in a concerted design and development effort by the Los Alamos Laboratory.%0A%3E%09%0A%3EThe project was also charged with gathering intelligence on the%C2%A0German nuclear weapon project. Through%C2%A0Operation Alsos, Manhattan Project personnel served in Europe, sometimes behind enemy lines, where they gathered nuclear materials and documents, and rounded up German scientists. Despite the Manhattan Project's tight security, Soviet%C2%A0atomic spies%C2%A0successfully penetrated the program.%0A%3E%09%0A%3EThe first nuclear device ever detonated was an implosion-type bomb at the%C2%A0Trinity test, conducted at New Mexico's%C2%A0Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range%C2%A0on 16 July 1945. Little Boy and Fat Man bombs were used a month later in the%C2%A0atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. In the immediate postwar years, the Manhattan Project conducted weapons testing at%C2%A0Bikini Atoll%C2%A0as part of%C2%A0Operation Crossroads, developed new weapons, promoted the development of the network of%C2%A0national laboratories, supported medical research into%C2%A0radiology%C2%A0and laid the foundations for the%C2%A0nuclear navy. It maintained control over American atomic weapons research and production until the formation of the%C2%A0United States Atomic Energy Commission%C2%A0in January 1947.%0A%3E%09%0A%3E!%5B%5D(https://steemitimages.com/DQmeyXyrAFUBNndBtWSoVih3jcLRuktsS2agq24GyLWBQgx/image.png)%09%0A%3EThe%C2%A0Trinity test%C2%A0of the Manhattan Project was the first detonation of a%C2%A0nuclear weapon.%0A%3E%09%0A%3E!%5B%5D(https://steemitimages.com/DQmVzy9dco9pLFTEY9gKAGa5pwYmpoCe6iHHV66bmnCd7b8/image.png)%09%0A%3E%09%0A%3EOrigins%0A%3E%09%0A%3EThe discovery of%C2%A0nuclear fission%C2%A0by German chemists%C2%A0Otto Hahn%C2%A0and%C2%A0Fritz Strassmann%C2%A0in 1938, and its theoretical explanation by%C2%A0Lise Meitner%C2%A0and%C2%A0Otto Frisch, made the development of an%C2%A0atomic bomb%C2%A0a theoretical possibility. There were fears that a%C2%A0German atomic bomb project%C2%A0would develop one first, especially among scientists who were refugees from%C2%A0Nazi Germany%C2%A0and other%C2%A0fascist%C2%A0countries.%5B2%5D%C2%A0In August 1939, Hungarian-born physicists%C2%A0Le%C3%B3 Szil%C3%A1rd%C2%A0and%C2%A0Eugene Wigner%C2%A0drafted the%C2%A0Einstein%E2%80%93Szil%C3%A1rd letter, which warned of the potential development of %22extremely powerful bombs of a new type%22. It urged the United States to take steps to acquire stockpiles of%C2%A0uranium ore%C2%A0and accelerate the research of%C2%A0Enrico Fermi%C2%A0and others into%C2%A0nuclear chain reactions. They had it signed by%C2%A0Albert Einstein%C2%A0and delivered to%C2%A0President%C2%A0Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt called on%C2%A0Lyman Briggs%C2%A0of the%C2%A0National Bureau of Standards%C2%A0to head the%C2%A0Advisory Committee on Uranium%C2%A0to investigate the issues raised by the letter. Briggs held a meeting on 21 October 1939, which was attended by Szil%C3%A1rd, Wigner and%C2%A0Edward Teller. The committee reported back to Roosevelt in November that uranium %22would provide a possible source of bombs with a destructiveness vastly greater than anything now known.%22%5B3%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3E%E2%80%A6%0A%3E%09%0A%3E!%5B%5D(https://steemitimages.com/DQmep9jRoQQb7GmkE8emu5MxHA43GQKnt8zbenYeh5DQVUv/image.png)%0A%3EA 1940 meeting at Berkeley:%C2%A0Ernest O. Groves approved the test, subject to the active material being recovered. Consideration was therefore given to a controlled fizzle, but Oppenheimer opted instead for a full-scale%C2%A0nuclear test, codenamed %22Trinity%22.%5B215%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3E%E2%80%A6%0A%3E%0A%3EFor the actual test, the weapon, nicknamed %22the gadget%22, was hoisted to the top of a 100-foot (30%C2%A0m) steel tower, as detonation at that height would give a better indication of how the weapon would behave when dropped from a bomber. Detonation in the air maximized the energy applied directly to the target, and generated less%C2%A0nuclear fallout. The gadget was assembled under the supervision of%C2%A0Norris Bradbury%C2%A0at the nearby%C2%A0McDonald Ranch House%C2%A0on 13 July, and precariously winched up the tower the following day.%5B222%5D%C2%A0Observers included Bush, Chadwick, Conant, Farrell, Fermi, Groves, Lawrence, Oppenheimer and Tolman. At 05:30 on 16 July 1945 the gadget exploded with an%C2%A0energy equivalent%C2%A0of around 20 kilotons of TNT, leaving a crater of%C2%A0Trinitite (radioactive glass) in the desert 250 feet (76%C2%A0m) wide. The shock wave was felt over 100 miles (160%C2%A0km) away, and the%C2%A0mushroom cloud%C2%A0reached 7.5 miles (12.1%C2%A0km) in height. It was heard as far away as%C2%A0El Paso, Texas, so Groves issued a cover story about an ammunition magazine explosion at Alamogordo Field.%5B223%5D%5B224%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3E%E2%80%A6%0A%3E%09%0A%3E!%5B%5D(https://steemitimages.com/DQmbnuQXfJtdenneEb1RQUuozSuALmJdWzhm16sA9FGdGeQ/image.png)%0A%3EThe explosives of %22the gadget%22 were raised to the top of the tower for the final assembly.%0A%3E%09%0A%3E%E2%80%A6%0A%3E%09%0A%3EPersonnel%0A%3E%09%0A%3EIn June 1944, the Manhattan Project employed some 129,000 workers, of whom 84,500 were construction workers, 40,500 were plant operators and 1,800 were military personnel. As construction activity fell off, the workforce declined to 100,000 a year later, but the number of military personnel increased to 5,600. Procuring the required numbers of workers, especially highly skilled workers, in competition with other vital wartime programs proved very difficult.%5B225%5D%C2%A0In 1943, Groves obtained a special temporary priority for labor from the%C2%A0War Manpower Commission. In March 1944, both the War Production Board and the War Manpower Commission gave the project their highest priority.%5B226%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3E%E2%80%A6%0A%3E%09%0A%3ESecrecy%0A%3E%0A%3EA 1945%C2%A0Life%C2%A0article estimated that before the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings %22probably no more than a few dozen men in the entire country knew the full meaning of the Manhattan Project, and perhaps only a thousand others even were aware that work on atoms was involved.%22 The magazine wrote that the more than 100,000 others employed with the project %22worked like moles in the dark%22. Warned that disclosing the project's secrets was punishable by 10 years in prison or a $10,000 ($133,000 today%5B1%5D) fine, they saw enormous quantities of raw materials enter factories with nothing coming out, and monitored %22dials and switches while behind thick concrete walls mysterious reactions took place%22 without knowing the purpose of their jobs.%5B235%5D%5B236%5D%5B237%5D%5B238%5D%5B239%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3EOak Ridge security personnel considered any private party with more than seven people as suspicious, and residents%E2%80%94who believed that US government agents were secretly among them%E2%80%94avoided repeatedly inviting the same guests. Although original residents of the area could be buried in existing cemeteries, every coffin was reportedly opened for inspection.%5B239%5D%C2%A0Everyone, including top military officials, and their automobiles were searched when entering and exiting project facilities. One Oak Ridge worker stated that %22if you got inquisitive, you were called on the carpet within two hours by government secret agents. Usually those summoned to explain were then escorted bag and baggage to the gate and ordered to keep going.%22 Nonetheless, despite being told that their work would help end the war and perhaps all future wars,%5B240%5D%C2%A0not seeing or understanding the results of their often tedious duties%E2%80%94or even typical side effects of factory work such as smoke from smokestacks%E2%80%94and the war in Europe ending without the use of their work, caused serious morale problems among workers and caused many rumors to spread. One manager stated after the war:%0A%3E%09%0A%3E%3EWell it wasn't that the job was tough%C2%A0... it was confusing. You see, no one knew what was being made in Oak Ridge, not even me, and a lot of the people thought they were wasting their time here. It was up to me to explain to the dissatisfied workers that they were doing a very important job. When they asked me what, I'd have to tell them it was a secret. But I almost went crazy myself trying to figure out what was going on.%5B238%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3EAnother worker told of how, working in a laundry, she every day held %22a special instrument%22 to uniforms and listened for %22a clicking noise%22. She learned only after the war that she had been performing the important task of checking for radiation with a%C2%A0geiger counter. To improve morale among such workers Oak Ridge created an extensive system of intramural sports leagues, including 10 baseball teams, 81 softball teams, and 26 football teams.%5B238%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3E!%5B%5D(https://steemitimages.com/DQmcMzWXWoWpjvAbatbMFHdJZzDrTk9mhiDUoyrR9njZVJu/image.png)%09%0A%3EA billboard encouraging secrecy among Oak Ridge workers%0A%3E%09%0A%3ECensorship%0A%3E%09%0A%3EVoluntary censorship of atomic information began before the Manhattan Project. After the start of the European war in 1939 American scientists began avoiding publishing military-related research, and in 1940 scientific journals began asking the%C2%A0National Academy of Sciences%C2%A0to clear articles.%C2%A0William L. Laurence%C2%A0of%C2%A0The New York Times, who wrote an article for%C2%A0The Saturday Evening Post%C2%A0in September 1940 on atomic fission, later learned that government officials asked librarians nationwide in 1943 to withdraw the issue.%5B241%5D%C2%A0The Soviets noticed the silence, however. In April 1942 nuclear physicist%C2%A0Georgy Flyorov%C2%A0wrote to%C2%A0Josef Stalin%C2%A0on the absence of articles on nuclear fission in American journals; this resulted in the Soviet Union establishing its own atomic bomb project.%5B242%5D%0A%3E%09%0A%3EThe Manhattan Project operated under tight security lest its discovery induce Axis powers, especially Germany, to accelerate their own nuclear projects or undertake covert operations against the project.%5B243%5D%C2%A0The government's%C2%A0Office of Censorship, by contrast, relied on the press to comply with a voluntary code of conduct it published, and the project at first avoided notifying the office. By early 1943 newspapers began publishing reports of large construction in Tennessee and Washington based on public records, and the office began discussing with the project how to maintain secrecy. Nuclear reactors are used at%C2%A0nuclear power plants%C2%A0for%C2%A0electricity generation%C2%A0and in%C2%A0propulsion of ships. Heat from%C2%A0nuclear fission%C2%A0is passed to a working fluid (water or gas), which runs through%C2%A0steam turbines. These either drive a ship's%C2%A0propellers%C2%A0or turn%C2%A0electrical generators. Nuclear generated steam in principle can be used for industrial process heat or for%C2%A0district heating. Some reactors are used to produce%C2%A0isotopes%C2%A0for%C2%A0medical%C2%A0and%C2%A0industrial%C2%A0use, or for production of%C2%A0weapons-grade%C2%A0plutonium. Some%C2%A0are run only for research. title | "Perhatian orang tua terhadap anak" |
---|
body | "

Wallahu a'lam bissawab
