Listening to a friend who almost had a tear in his eye when speaking of his dismay and guilt about when upon finding that his wife had acquired some inheritance money it had crossed his mind to murder her, well I just had to laugh.

He was subject to an intrusive thought which represented the last thing he would ever wish to do to his wife and in his attempt to push the thought away he actually made it more prominent in his mind, psychology calls this "ironic process theory"
**Ironic Process Theory**
Ironic processing is when the attempt to suppress a thought actually brings it more intensely into the conscious, in fact the harder we try to suppress a thought the more powerfully it will haunt us.
The classic example is the "white bear experiment" by the social psychologist Daniel Wegner who developed ironic process theory and the experiment off of the back of a quote he read in Fyodor Dostoevsky's book "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions" in which he wrote ***"Try to pose for yourself this task: not to think of a polar bear, and you will see that the cursed thing will come to mind every minute."***

The observation a can pretty much be summed up with the old adage of "what we resist, persists" and ironic processing can show up in various situations, but let us use the example of nervousness, the harder we try not to be nervous the more intensely nerves manifest.
Now we also have another phenomena noted by a physician named Dr Viktor Frankl which is called paradoxical intention,and this can seemingly be the cure for the ironic process.
**Paradoxical Intention**
Paradoxical intention is generally associated more with the automatic nerve response and how if instead of suppressing what appears to be an involuntary nervous response to a situation such as blushing or nervousness we actually attempt to increase its symptoms and in doing so they subside.
This also fits the bill for the adage of "what we resist, persists"

**What We Resist Persists**
what we resist persists does not mean we should not refrain from acting on impulse, you can't just slap your best friend in the face in the name of non-resistance (I had to learn this the hard way)
Acting on such an urge would actually be a resistance to the emotional drive behind it by projecting it out into the "material world" in an attempt to escape the underlying emotion and satiate the compulsion and thus suppressing things further.

It's fair to say that the ironic thought process in and of itself is not at all problematic. If you see the image of a white bear in your mind when trying hard not to see the image of a white bear then that "is what it is" but as soon as an emotional response appears perhaps in frustration at continuing to see a white bear, then we have a "problem"
**What's The Problem?**
We are most likely experiencing two elements in conjunction to the image in the mind, there will certainly be the addition of a sensation arising in the body and probably some mental dialogue such as "I cant stop seeing this stupid bear" "this bear is really starting to do my head in now, why can't it just leave my mind alone" or something along those lines, and while these sentences in and of themselves again have no intrinsic value they fuel the bodily sensation and thus keep the "feeling" of frustration alive.

The fact is that any thought that is not charged by a felt sensation in the body has no power over us at all, and the emotional charge of the energy in the body is also void of any "meaning" when it has no overlay in the form of thought, it appears as a pure non-conceptual energy.
Our entire emotional state at any one time can be broken down into three elements, mental dialogue, mental imagery, and bodily sensation. It is the sensation of energy in the body that gives power to the thought making the thought appear to be a reality.

**Imagine If You Will**
Imagine if you will, with your eyes closed, that you are holding one of your hands out in front of you, actually hold one of your hands out in front of you if it helps, and as you are looking at this image of your hand bring your awareness into the space of your body, and without any thoughts about it just be aware of your feelings and how it feels to be you, you may notice the image of your hand fades and that is fine, just spend a few moments or as long as you like, resting awareness fully and gently into the pure feeling of your body.
Looking at the image of your hand may have had a fairly neutral bodily energy attached to it, if the hand faded and you were left with the pure awareness of your body then that felt how ever it felt for you.

Now you can repeat this in exactly the same way except this time imagine as you hold out your hand in front of you that somebody you know is standing facing you and holding your hand, allow the image to be there as you bring awareness fully into the energy felt in the body and allow the pure felt emotion to be there without thought, the image may fade and that is ok, lower your hand if you wish and just rest awareness fully and gently into the energy of the body.
Notice any changes to the energies of the body, notice that without thought or imagination no one is resposible for them, this is your emotional body, these energies are a product of you.

You can repeat this as many times as you like imagining whoever you choose.
If you imagine someone you have had a disagreement with then that is great, allow the image to be there and bring your awareness fully and gently into your own body fully allowing the pure emotion without trying to do anything about it, only allowing it fully, if a thought arises then allow it but keep awareness fully and gently in the space of your body, whatever you feel don't try to change it, but do feel it, feel right into it, for as long as it lasts, welcome the raw energy, allow it to stay, and notice as it gently dissolves in the light of awareness.

« Komm nach Budapest!“, sagte meine ungarische Freundin Éva, die ich in einem Zug vor drei Jahren kennen gelernt hatte, als wir im Café Szamos in der Landstraßer Hauptraße zusammen Kaffee tranken. Drei Wochen später saß ich im Zug in Richtung Pannonische Tiefebene. Strahlend schön war der Tag. Éva empfing mich am Bahnsteig in Keleti und begleitete mich zu meiner Unterkunft im Hotel Benczúr. Ich kannte das Hotel von meiner letzten Reise und wurde begrüßt, als wäre ich längst Teil der Belegschaft. Ich erkannte viele Gesichter wieder und brauchte auch keine Daten mitzuteilen. Alles war schon da. Ich bezog ein großzügiges Zimmer mit Blick auf die wenig befahrene Straße, in der sich die hübschen Fassaden zahlreicher Botschaften verschiedener Nationen und mächtige Bäume im frischen Frühlingsgrün präsentierten. War es Lukács oder Zoltán, der mir das Gepäck ins Zimmer brachte? Ich werde die Zwillinge nie unterscheiden können. Im Kühlschrank würde sich eine bunte Obstplatte verstecken, meinte der Zwilling. Ein Geschenk des Hauses. Ich war wirklich verwöhnt.
Éva und ich erhielten eine Einladung zum Mittagessen auf der Terrasse, die die mittägliche Sonne freundlichst willkommen hieß. Der humorvolle Kellner nahm die Bestellung auf und beantwortete bereitwillig meine Frage. Der schmackhafte Zander, den ich wählte, war aus dem Plattensee gefischt worden, dem Balaton, wie ihn die Ungarn nennen. Er mundete vorzüglich. Gespräche über die Liebe und das Leben begleiteten die Mahlzeit und wurden erst unterbrochen, als der Blick erneut in die Speisekarte fiel. Ein Nachtisch durfte nicht fehlen. Zart und schlank erschien die überbackene Palatschinke vor mir auf dem Teller. Gefüllt mit feinstem Topfen. Ein lukullisches Vergnügen.
Nach dem Essen bat Gergely Muskovics, der Chef-Rezeptionist, um ein Foto vor dem Hotel. Koch und Kellner wurden gerufen, um die Gruppe zu komplettieren. Eva bemühte sich, um eine gelungene Aufnahme. Wir hatten unseren Spaß. Mir war das Hotel zu meinem Budapester Zuhause geworden. Wohin das Auge blickt, es begegnet einem in erster Linie Freundlichkeit. Wie immer hatte sich Éva um ein kulturelles Programm für das Wochenende bemüht. Das Tourismus-Magazin SERVUS, www.servus.hu/ , das sie monatlich veröffentlicht, gibt Auskunft über viele gute Adressen und Veranstaltungen in der Stadt. Für Freitagabend wählte sie einen Besuch im Béla Bartók-Haus, im Stadtteil Pasaret im zweiten der dreiundzwanzig Bezirke Budapests. Der grüne, hügelige Randbezirk ist geprägt von vornehmen Villen und blumenbewachsenen Gärten. Das Haus in der Csalán Straße 29 bewohnte Ungarns berühmtester Komponist und Musiker, Béla Bartók, von 1932 bis 1940. Heute ist es ein Gedenkhaus, das von dem preisgekrönten Klavier- und Orgelkünstler Csaba Király geleitet wird. Bei seiner Gestaltung im Jahr 1981 half Béla Bartók, der ältere Sohn von Bartók, mit. Sein Wille war es, das ganze Erbe seines Vaters an einem Ort auszustellen.
Ágnes gab mir eine private Führung durch die drei Geschosse, in dem ich das Leben eines Genies nachempfinden durfte. Ich staunte über die Sammlungen des Künstlers und noch viel mehr über dessen Leidenschaft, das Volksliedgut des Landes zusammenzutragen. Der Musikethnologe Bartók unternahm dafür weitläufige Reisen durch Ungarn, Rumänien, die Slowakei und die Türkei und sammelte über 10.000 Lieder, die er mittels Phonograf registrierte oder niederschrieb. So mancher liedkundige Bürger, der eine Melodie zum Besten gab, glaubte gewiss, einem Teufelsgerät gegenüberzustehen. Die eigene Stimme durch den Phonografen - einer damals bahnbrechenden technischen Errungenschaft - wie ein Echo zu vernehmen, versetzte so manchen Laien in Angst und Schrecken. Heute ist das kaum noch vorstellbar. Nur bei genauerem Hinsehen könnte einem bange werden ...
Wenig später saß ich mit Eva im kleinen Konzertsaal und erwartete, den Klängen zweier viel gepriesener Künstler des Landes zu lauschen. Der berühmteste Cellist Ungarns erwies uns die Ehre, Miklós Perényi, am Klavier war es Csaba Király, der Direktor des Hauses persönlich. Ich lenkte meine Aufmerksamkeit in erster Linie auf das Cello, war ich doch auf diesem Instrument Expertin im Anfangsstadium. So würde es später Zsuzsanna resümieren. Und sie hat Recht. Es ist nicht einfach, Herr über Bogen und Saiten zu werden. Aber die Aussicht dem Cello irgendwann den sauber gespielten, und so unvergleichlichen Klang zu entlocken, wird mich hinreichend motivieren, nicht aufzugeben. Virtuos und in beeindruckender Leichtigkeit strich der Maestro über die Saiten. Ich neidete ihm sein Können. Werke von Liszt, Bartók, Brahms und Bach wurden geboten. Das Publikum war verzaubert und dankte den musikalischen Genuss mit viel Applaus. Ganz zufrieden traten wir die Heimreise an.
Samstagfrüh lachte erneut die Sonne. Budapests Metrolinie 1, die älteste Europas, brachte mich ins Zentrum, wo mich ein fröhlicher Kunsthandwerksmarkt zum Frühlingsbeginn überraschte. Handgebasteltes aller Art wurde ausgestellt. Tönerne Ware, Originale aus Holz, Glas und Metall und genähte Stücke gefüllt mit frischem Lavendel. Menschen drängten um die Mittagszeit zu den Grill-und Gulaschbuden und löschten ihren Durst mit den prall gefüllten Krügeln Bier. Ich erwarb das eine oder andere gefällige Mitbringsel und traf Éva um 13 Uhr vor dem Café Gerbeaud. Über den Budapester „Graben“, der kleineren Schwester der beliebten Einkaufsstraße in Wien, der Váci utca, flanierten wir bis zum Restaurant Kárpátia, wo wir aufs Neue zum Mittagessen geladen waren.
Die historischen Mauern der Gaststätte, www.karpatia.hu/en, zählen 130 Jahre und waren Teil der angrenzenden Franziskaner-Kirche. Heute versammeln sich unter den kunstvoll gestalteten Kreuzgewölben Familien, um traditionelle Feste zu feiern. Wir zogen die Terrasse vor und profitierten von den warmen Frühlingstemperaturen. Der Kellner empfahl frischen Spargel und einen Wels aus der Theiß, dem zweitwichtigsten Fluss des Landes. Dieser fließt im Osten Ungarns von Nord nach Süd parallel zur Donau und trifft als längster Nebenfluss derselben in Serbien auf seine große Mutter.
Éva lobte ihre Wahl der Speisen so sehr wie ich die meine. Dass zum Fisch auch Weißkraut passen würde, erlebte ich zum Ersten Mal in Budapest. Es war eine wirklich gelungene Kombination. Zum Abschluss liebäugelten wir mit einer Variation an Strudeln, die auch prompt erprobt wurde. Wir waren begeistert und satt wie schon lange nicht. Ein Erinnerungsbild wurde festgehalten und ich versprach, den Restaurant-Tipp mit einer treuen Leserschaft zu teilen.
Wir hätten gut daran getan, eines der Fahrräder zu schnappen und bei Budapests Manifestation „I bike Budapest“ mitzumachen. Hunderte orangefarbene Radler kamen uns auf der bestbefahrenen Rákóczi út entgegen, gefolgt von Abertausenden sportlichen Ungarn jeden Alters. Es war fürwahr ein Spektakel. Ich verfolgte es lange vom Balkon des Urania Kinos aus, während Eva ungehalten auf ihre Freundinnen wartete. Diese steckten wohl dank Demo im überforderten Großstadtverkehr fest.
Der Abend war einem besonderen Ereignis gewidmet. In besagtem Kino www.urania-nf.hu/en/mission werden nicht nur Filme geboten und wöchentliche Milongas veranstaltet. Einmal monatlich wird auch eine Vorstellung aus der MET in New York übertragen. Éva ist leidenschaftliche Opernliebhaberin und hatte oft von dem Angebot geschwärmt. Diesmal war ich mit dabei. Mit einiger Verspätung stießen Zsuzsanna, Veronika, Annemarie und Ildikó zu uns. Es blieb dennoch Zeit für ein Kennenlernen. Mit großem Interesse lauschte ich den Geschichten dieser Frauen. Nicht auf Ungarisch. Diesen Ehrgeiz habe ich noch nicht entwickelt. Mein Wortschatz umfasst ein Dutzend Vokabel und es bleibt zu hoffen, dass zumindest diese nicht verloren gehen. Aber Gott sei Dank sind fast alle Ungarn des Deutschen kundig, und wenn nicht, dann schafft die englische Sprache Abhilfe.
Der Kinosaal war prall gefüllt. Gespannt warteten wir auf die Darbietungen der Cavalleria Rusticana von Pietro Mascagni und Leoncavallos Pagliacci. Beide Dramen waren mir unbekannt, nicht aber das berühmte Intermezzo der Sizilianischen Bauernehre. Es ist die Art von Musik, die Gänsehaut auslöst. Ihr gebührte ein Sonderapplaus. Tragisch fürwahr sind die beiden Geschichten. Erschütternd die Dramen, in der die Liebe so gerne siegen würde, der Triumph aber dennoch den menschlichen Begrenzungen vorbehalten bleibt. In einer unaufhaltsamen Tragik eilen der verletzte Stolz und die mangelnde Selbstliebe dem Tod entgegen. Machtlos bleiben alle anderen zurück, während sich das zugetragene Leid über eine ganze Gemeinschaft ergießt. Ein Unglück fürwahr. Und in einer Echtheit gespielt, die erschaudern lässt. Gebührende Anerkennung wurde den Darstellern gezollt. Sie hatten eine Glanzleistung geboten. Vielleicht hätte ich den Applaus dennoch lieber ausgespart. Manchmal meine ich, dass wahre Anerkennung im Stillen passiert. Vor allem, wenn Kunst betroffen macht. Sehr bewegt verließen wir das Kino. Es war ein gelungener Abend.
Selten hatte ich in einem Hotel so gut geruht wie in diesem und bestens ausgeschlafen erwachte ich am Sonntagmorgen. Nur die Sonne hatte Mühe aus ihren Federn zu kriechen. Eingebettet in dicke Wolken bevorzugte sie ihr Schläfchen auszudehnen. Nach einem reichhaltigen Frühstück mit großer Auswahl am Büffet packte ich meinen Trolley. Bevor es zurück nach Wien ging, besuchte ich Éva und ihre Familie im 14. Bezirk. Die Söhne Martin und Balázs waren da und ihre Freundinnen Lucie und Agi. Nur Peter, seine Frau und die kleine Bogi fehlten. Sie war erst zarte fünf Monate alt. Éva war in die Rolle der Gastgeberin geschlüpft und hatte einen Vormittag lang gekocht. Im großen Eisentopf brutzelte der Truthahn mit Zucchinigemüse. Im Rohr standen die in Folie gewickelten Erdäpfel. Ein Aperitif eröffnete den Schmaus. Sehr herzlich war das Beisammensein, anregend die Gespräche und schmackhaft die Gerichte. Ein mit Maroni und Himbeeren gefülltes Plundergebäck bot einen krönenden Abschluss.
Gegen 15 Uhr trat ich die Heimreise an. Dankend nahm ich Abschied. Ein Taxi fuhr mich zum Bahnhof Keleti, wo mich ein gut gefüllter Waggon der ÖBB verschluckte und drei Stunden später in Wien Meidling wieder preisgab. Körper, Geist und Seele hatten über das Wochenende wunderbare Nahrung bekommen. Sie hatten allesamt gelebt wie Gott in Frankreich. Auch die Waage sollte ihnen Recht geben …
