Also, understand please, that I think enabling/encouraging young minds to think for themselves is MOST important, so do not waste time here that could be better spent elsewhere. Please.
Murder is not (solely) based on morals, depending upon your definition of "morals" (and murder) and your belief system/worldview, there is (can be) reason involved.
Morals we can agree on? For me, what is TRULY moral is that which is consistent with how the Universe truly works regardless of what anyone thinks/feels. And while TRUE morality MUST be, what we call (think of as) "morality" is not (necessarily) equivalent. Given this definition of (true)morality, then morality and reason are, essentially, equivalent.
In the interim (until/unless) we unveil (more of) how the Universe operates:
That which limits the freedom of the individual to the benefit of the (freedom of the) whole is moral. AND what is moral/immoral (at least in the human sense) is not cutanddried it will ever be dependent upon circumstances (requiring judgment).
Please expound upon (at about 11:40+ of video) what "sounds brilliant" to you? Was it that those who look out for their own health (no smoke, no fat, etc) deserve healthcare paid for by society on a descending scale ending in those folks that DON'T "take care of themselves"?
Re: "the rich" - there is no rich if you force the rich to pay for the poor (robinhood redistribution ends only (logically) in economic equality), so I don't think it is fair to say "this doesn't affect the rich".
Let my TRY to be clear - I do not believe in (I don't think it will work in the long term) holding a club over (forcing) people to be "moral" whether it is via law or threat of hell (religion, morality, etc) IN PRINCIPLE.
I personally think that government (system of societal rules) will always reflect (deserve) the society which inflicts it. AND until/unless folks are . . . "good" in and of themselves, we will always need at least some laws limiting societal/community interaction.
I think the best interim (interim, because I am a pinkeristic positivist) solution is the minimum rules to restrict individual behavior when/where it imposes upon/limits the freedoms of the whole (murder, rape, theft, etc).
Lastly, I do not need to understand (all there is to know about) philosophy (reason) in order to use it (perhaps only in degree). That is like saying I need to have all the unequivocal evidence before I can make a decision/judgement - ain't never gonna happen. At some point, you just do the best you can.
I think the "path of safety" is in the judgment of the great unwashed masses. If we, as a society, agree to be bound by the . . . judgment of the whole - as flawed as it may presently be, while you and I and she and he continue to have a voice (and use it where we can to REASONABLY influence - as opposed to FORCE), then EVENTUALLY we CAN have . . . something great((er) than we have now).
Also, never doubt, that regardless of whether you and I ever reach understanding (or especially agreement), I GREATLY value your service and our interaction - should you ever find yourself in the land of oz (god forbid :-) I would be honored to buy the first round.
