I realize that almost nothing Trump says is very clever, but is there a way this bravado could be the right tactic?
A lot of commentators say it isn't a good idea. Especially the more belligerent comments.
For one, if the comment leads to no actual military action- as it shouldn't - the USA is just seen by NK as being all bark and no bite.
The flip side of this is that NK can't know for sure if it is all bark and no bite before the bite happens or doesn't happen. What this means is these comments risk raising the military tensions and paranoia of the regime.
Now most of us all agree KJU isn't actually irrational, wants to live, and so would never attack the USA or SK first. This is correct I think. But there comes a point in tension-raising where this calculus changes. An article posted in this sub a few weeks ago discusses this. Basically, if NK believes it is actually going to be subject to a USA firs strike, it would be rational for them to preemptively lash out with overwhelming force first. That's because the balance of power is so much against NK, that the USA could more or less crush it in a short period of time and cripple their ability to respond to USA military targets (though not bombard civilians in Seoul).
Point being that if tensions are raised high enough that NK starts to believe an attack is imminent, it would start to become rational for them to strike first with overwhelming force, and try to force a truce based on the threat of nuking another city or base.
That's why it's not a smart strategy. It either makes the USA look like all bark and no bite, or it works to change the NK calculus of a first attack. That's why you see photos of Kelly having an existential crisis at the UN, while Trump says a bunch of batshit insane things in front of the entire world, and at a organization that was designed to prevent global conflict, and not provide a space for the president f one country to excitedly explains how it is going to wipe another one off the map.
Now before you say 'NK says crazy shit all the time!', I'm saying the USA is better than that, and should act like it. It's the richest and most powerful country in the world, and its citizens enjoy some of the highest standards of living, and the USA should be using those advantages to lead and make the world better and not be contributing to creating the biggest military crisis since the end of Cold War." |
