| body | "In the highlands of Scotland the famous Harry Potter scene where the train that takes the students to Hogwarts crosses over a big viaduct. This is the Glenfinnan viaduct north of Fort William and across the street from Loch Shiel.

You can ride that train and a few years ago I took my GF on it. It runs from 24th April to 27th October annually. There are two services every day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The day before we took the train we drove up to the viaduct and had a wander about so I could take some photos of it.. the weather was extremely poor and raining heavily so the picture taking was a bit lack lustre.

The next morning we headed to the train station. The train was already on the platform and all the train geeks were already swarming it to get photos, so I joined them :)
<center>
</center>
As you can see the actual train is not called the 'Hogwarts Express’ but rather it is called the Jacobite Train. Why? Because it runs along the Jacobite line.. who are the Jacobites? Well, Jacobitism was a political movement in Great Britain and Ireland that aimed to restore the Roman Catholic Stuart King James II of England and Ireland (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and his heirs to the thrones of England, Scotland, France and Ireland.

In 1745 he started the Jacobite rebellion where he sailed from France with his army to Scotland to gain a foothold in the western highlands.. from there he’d march south and meet with french allies in London to usurp George II. He landed on the shores of loch Shiel opposite the viaduct (it hadn’t been built yet) and so this is why the train is called the jacobite train (this is jacobite country)..

..and why this state is on the beach of the loch.
So enough with the history lesson, this is a proper steam train, so we got on and headed down the line. The train travels from Fort William to a small fishing village called mallaig.

I didn’t photograph the interior of the train, but I can tell you that only a few of the carriages have cabins like the ones you see in the movie (those seats cost extra!). We were in the regular section where each car is filled with benches with tables that face each other.. the seats are very old and you can feel the springs poking your but while you sit.

If you have back problems like me you will find yourself standing up often, which isn’t a bad thing because you take your camera and go stick your head out the window to take photos.

The real highlight for everyone of course was crossing the viaduct, everyone was poking their heads out of the windows to take pictures.. yours truly included!

At times it was difficult to know what to take a picture of as everywhere you looked was a beautiful view.

Once we got across the viaduct the glenfinnan train station pops up. The train stops there so everyone can get out and stretch their legs, and poke around the place like the tourists we all are.

Its a quaint little station, classic old style british.. I thought the witches broomsticks up against the wall were a nice touch.
After a short stay we got back on the train and continued on to Mallaig taking in the views along the way.

The end of the line takes you into mallaig which is a very small fishing village on the coast of western scotland. The harbour is quite busy.

You have about 2 hours to look around and get some lunch so most of the passengers (us included) filled up the local pubs for a typical pub lunch and a pint. I had fish and chips.
<center>
</center>
Then when the appointed departure time arrives we all got back on the train to head back.
<center>
</center>
I saw this church in the middle of nowhere as we returned that I didn’t notice on the way out… I don’t know anything about it and it looks deserted.. I always wondered if its an actively in use church or not.

When we arrived at Glenfinnan station on the return we encountered the other train on the afternoon service just heading out (there are only two jacobite trains that run the line).

We returned to Fort William in the early afternoon and we were due to leave the following morning so we decided to hop back in the car an head back to the viaduct for some more photos while the afternoon light lasted.

There’s a hill you can climb near the visitor centre for the viaduct which offers you a view of not just the Loch but also of the viaduct.
<center>

Even though it was a few years ago now that I went on this trip I have always wanted to return with my drone to get some sweet aerial shots.
<br>
Since I’ve been on this trip it has become a bit more popular as more and more people learn about it, so buying tickets has started to become tricky. If you ever want to go on this train ride you need to make sure to buy your tickets well in advance. I would recommend booking them at least 3 months in advance or you might find them to be sold out.. you may even after to book further in advance than that!
