http://mo.bi/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Why-Havent-We-Found-Aliens-_v1_home-900x600.jpg
The outer space is "huge, huge, brainless big," as the author Douglas Adams formulates it, and the huge dimensions make up a huge obstacle in the search for space in space. Even if our own galaxy was packed with spacecraft right now, their worlds could be scattered with thousands of light years and blindly pass each other as cosmic ships in the night.
But what if the biggest challenge in tracing our potential alien penpals is not about distance - but about time? It is one of the key issues in an upcoming dissertation in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics.
The dissertation is written by Avi Loeb, an astrophysician, professor and chairman of the astronomical faculty at Harvard University. Here the professor maps the probability of the emergence of life from the emergence of the first stars 30 million years after the Big Bang until the death of the last stars several billion years in the future. Loeb's team focused on "life as we know it," that is, soil organisms on a rocky planet with floating water within the habitable range of its star.
The results indicated that the red dwarf, a smaller type of star, had the best conditions for hosting habitable planets due to their incredibly long life. Although yellow dwarfs like our sun are about ten times as large, the slow-burning red dwarfs live many thousand times longer.
There may be several significant disadvantages of the red dwarf stars, including a tendency to be wild in their "youth". The sunbreaks sprained by "young" red dwarfs can swim and sterilize the atmosphere on nearby planets so they are no longer able to support life. Although a recent survey revealed that some planets that are within the habitable range of red dwarf stars have compact atmospheres resembling Earth, Mars or Venus, it is not yet clear whether there exists life here.
But if red dwarf stars can support life, it's quite logical to assume that their long, stable lifespan would increase the chance of blooming new ecosystems. "Our conclusion is that there is much greater likelihood of life in the future if smaller stars can support it," Loeb tells me. "The page (smaller stars) lives so much longer, it means a longer period of time when they supply surrounding planets with heat."
By calculating the probability of the formation of habitable planets through billions of years of living conditions resembling the Earth, Loeb's team of researchers found that the chance of the rise of life was about a thousand times larger.

In this scenario, we portray farmers as a fast-flowering race born prematurely, long before the most fertile year of the universe. This could be a possible explanation of the classic Fermi paradox: Have we failed in our attempt to find life in the outer space because we are the first ones who have appeared for the cosmic feast?
"It may be that it's tomorrow in the universe to quote Reagan," says Seth Shostak, senior astronomer and director of SETI, or Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute. "There's a lot more life going on."
"But there's nothing that means there's no other way to find today," he adds.
And yes, we can be one of several early mature civilizations in the universe. But Loeb's team is not alone in their assumptions that the golden age of life in the universe is billions or billions of years in the future.
Another study, recently conducted by a group of researchers with Pratika Dayal at the head of astrophysics at the University of Groningen, reached a similar conclusion by going deeper with the role of radioactivity from supernovae and gamma ray outbreaks has played in relation to the maintenance of life over the last 13 billion years.
Her team models illustrate how a decrease in radioactivity may have resulted in a universe that is 20 times more habitable today than it was four billion years ago when it appeared for the first time on earth. The survey also calculated that our cosmic environment will continue to develop in a direction that will only make living conditions even more favorable in the future.
"People's approaches are so different," Dayal tells me. "The report, written by Avi (Loeb), has a completely different approach to what we are doing, yet we find more or less all the same results. It is very promising because it shows that we are on correct track. "
By nature, all of this research will, of course, remain speculative until we have collected more tangible data about the universe's support of life for a long time and interpreted that data through more robust simulations.
"Even the best simulations are just not good enough to investigate the universe's habitation on an extremely large scale," says Dayal. "We're just trying to find ways to get rid of the problem."
"We should remain agnostic until we've been out and lead," says Loeb.
Nevertheless, it is interesting to pervert the implications of people being the first, or among the first, examples of intelligent life in the universe. Let's say we are - just for fun. Does it change our view of ourselves and our place in the universe? Are we big brothers and sisters of society that will arise in the circles of stars that have not even been born yet? Should we, in addition to our attempts to communicate across the infinite giant space, also try to communicate over time, to the wealth of space workers that are expected to appear several billion years after our sun dies?
We are looking for life in the outer space because we want to learn from other intelligent civilizations, but in reality, it may be that we learn from us. Even if these speculative future lifestyles are more advanced than humans, it may be that they would benefit from information about our view of the universe. Just imagine how much it would be for us farmers if we got this kind of bottle of cheese from an extinct civilization in a remote galaxy, whether they were technologically superior to us or not.
https://www.sciencenews.org/sites/default/files/2016/04/main/articles/043016_et-tom_feat.jpg
It is of course possible that we already receive posthume shipments from aliens, but are not able to identify them. "It is one of the very big unanswered questions: When you say looking for life in the outer space, what do you mean?" says Dayal.
"In the area of astrophysics, life is generally reminiscent of what we know from the Earth. But what if it's different? Would we at all be able to recognize it? How can we be sure there is not one or another way of life trying to communicate with us without knowing it? "
"It is clearly possible that there are other forms of life and that nature has a better imagination than we have," Loeb tells me. "We have only one example to work from."
It is an important limitation to keep in mind. The only thing that is more unbearable than the idea of the vain attempts of Romans to contact us is the inverse scenario where human attempts at contact reach foreign civilizations that are unable to interpret them. If there is ever to be a mere link between cognitive sophisticated life across time and space, it is essential to find a solution to this issue.
"It is very possible that this kind of life forms scattered around the galaxy, and there are places where we would not expect to find them."
"There are probably many who have an attitude to how to communicate with creatures that could potentially emerge about five, ten, or 100 billion years," says Shostak. "It's a huge challenge."
There are some simple suggestions on how it could be solved, even though they all rely on groundbreaking technological breakthroughs. For example, we could focus much more on getting farther into space. It's significantly easier said than done, but in theory it would increase people's chances of being hanged long enough to interact directly with life on other planets.
"If you are an intelligent form of life we are - a technological civilization - it's all about everything because it means you should not limit yourself to living close to a star," says Loeb. "In principle, such a civilization, if very advanced, could move away from the star that hosted it for the first time."
"It is very possible that such forms of life live scattered around the galaxy, and there are places where we would not expect to find them," he continues. "There can be a lot of spacecraft moving through the galaxy, but not particularly visible to us because they are small. If you imagine a civilization that has existed and developed technologically for hundreds of millions of years, then there's No limits to how far it may have spread. "
People can one day develop the skills needed to become this form of star-jumping civilization. Projects like Breakthrough Starshot, aiming to send a tiny spacecraft fleet to the nearest star system, Alfa Centauri, hope to pave the way for this kind of development.
"Our civilization will have to move somewhere (to survive in the long run)," says Loeb. "The nearest example is Proxima Centauri, so it might be we should consider traveling there."
It is difficult to predict whether and when these efforts will yield fruit and ultimately we have to end up with our primitive planetary existence and its star-exploding expiration date. In that case, our plan B in order to contact future forms of life could be to launch some sort of memory boards in the form of robotic spaces or radio signals for civilizations that do not yet exist. It would be a shot in the fog and we would never know if it succeeded or not. But it would be a small first step on the way to the contact we clearly see from other living beings in our cosmos.
Right now, it's a fun thought experiment. But if we continue to find data that supports us living in a lonely universe that can only eventually develop into a galactic abundance of different civilizations, it can help redefine our own role in the universe - and thus our approach to other beings - past, present and future - as we share it with.
