<p style="text-align: justify;">Prima ho citato anche la corteccia frontale, oggi sappiamo che quest'area del cervello regola le emozioni come l'aggressivita' e l'impulsivita'. Come facciamo a saperlo?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Grazie ad un altro incidente, questa volta avvenuto nel 1848. Phineas Gage stava lavorando alla costruzione di una ferrovia, ed e' stato vittima di un'incidente di cantiere in cui una barra di ferro gli ha perforato il cranio. Per fortuna sua (e nostra) Phineas e' sopravvissuto all'incidente perche' la barra di ferro aveva distrutto solamente la sua corteccia frontale. Purtroppo, come persona era irriconoscibile. Phineas era diventato molto piu' aggressivo e irascibile. Tuttavia, e' grazie a lui che abbiamo capito che la corteccia frontale e' fondamentale nel determinare comportamenti e tenere a bada l'aggressivita'. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Questo comunque non e' stato l'unico caso. Studi condotti su individui che hanno commesso crimini violenti, rivelano che una grossa percentuale di queste persone hanno subito concussioni della corteccia frontale. Se invece volessimo fare un altro esempio possiamo parlare degli psicopatici, una cosa che hanno in comune e' una minore attivita' nella corteccia frontale. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Fin qui abbiamo accennato i fattori fisiologici che influenzano il nostro comportamento. Proviamo a cambiare punto di vista e guardiamo a come gli stimoli che riceviamo possono influenzare le nostre azioni.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">I nostri 5 sensi sono una fonte inesauribile di stimoli per il nostro cervello, studi recenti hanno dimostrato come ad esempio stimoli visivi possano cambiare i nostri stati d'animo.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Stranamente, i volti delle persone e soprattutto il colore della loro pelle sembra avere un effetto significativo. In un esperimento, dei soggetti sono stati messi davanti ad uno schermo che proiettava immagini per un decimo di secondo. Quando gli veniva mostrato il volto di una persona etnicamente diversa da loro, c'era un'immediata attivazione dell'amigdala, il che indica uno stato d'animo di allerta/paura. Tuttavia, se l'immagine veniva lasciata sullo schermo piu' a lungo i soggetti di solito riuscivano a razionalizzare e a ridurre l'attivita' nell'amigdala. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Volete un'altro esempio? E' stato dimostrato che quando gli uomini si trovano in presenza di donne sono meno avversi al rischio ed hanno anche la tendenza a comprare oggetti piu' costosi se si trovano in un negozio alla presenza di una bella commessa. Questi sono segnali di corteggiamento che il cervello dell'uomo inconsciamente manda all'altro sesso.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Tuttavia le nostre azioni non sono sempre bianco o nero, infatti a volte le circostanze vanno in contrasto con i segnali chimici nel nostro cervello e questo puo' creare situazioni interessanti. Vi faccio l'esempio di un altro esperimento. Questa volta si trattava di un gioco economico. Ad alcuni partecipanti e' stato chiesto di barare mentre ad altri e' stato richiesto di rispondere ad un quiz per misurare il livello di fiducia che questi avevano nei riguardi degli altri utenti. Successivamente, i ricercatori hanno misurato il livello di ossitocina nel plasma dei soggetti. Il livello di fiducia negli altri giocatori dipendeva chiaramente dalla concentrazione di ossitocina nel plasma a prescindere se gli altri giocatori barassero o meno. Concorrenti che nello studio hanno ricevuto somministrazioni di ossitocina, avevano la tendenza a fidarsi degli altri concorrenti. Si fidavano persino di concorrenti che si comportavano in modo palesemente scorretto. Tuttavia, maggiore fiducia veniva data solo a concorrenti che erano presenti nella stessa stanza.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Un altro fattore importantissimo, che influenza i nostri comportamenti, e' l'ambiente in cui cresciamo. Infatti, nonostante il nostro cervello sia sviluppato per l'85% durante i primi 2 anni della nostra vita. E' il restante 15% che determinera' che tipo di persone saremo. La corteccia frontale continua a svilupparsi finche' arriviamo al ventesimo anno di vita. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Comportamenti violenti in eta' adulta potrebbero essere la conseguenza di traumi infantili, e' stato calcolato che il 33% di adulti che sono stati abusati da bambini abusano i propri figli a loro volta. Di nuovo, tutto dipende dallo sviluppo dell'amigdala e della corteccia frontale. Una conseguenza di traumi infantili e' che la corteccia frontale non si sviluppi correttamente in eta' adulta, mentre l'amigdala potrebbe svilupparsi troppo. Cosi i soggetti faranno fatica a controllare le loro emozioni e probabilmente avranno comportamenti violenti in eta' adulta.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Se dipendesse solo da questi fattori, avremmo uniformita' di comportamenti per tutto il globo, eppure il numero di omicidi procapite e' molto piu' alto in Guatemala che in Svizzera, perche'?</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Ovviamente ci sono anche forti influenze culturali in gioco. Prendiamo ad esempio una cultura individualista come quella occidentale ed una collettivista come quella orientale. Una cultura individualista mettera' al centro i diritti dei singoli e valorizzera' la crescita personale. Una cultura collettivista invece, mettera' al centro il bene comune, spesso a discapito dei diritti del singolo. Da un punto di vista biologico ogni situazione attivera' in modo diverso la corteccia frontale a seconda del background dell'individuo. Ad esempio, se metti un americano davanti ad uno specchio, ci sara' una forte attivazione della sua corteccia frontale, invece se ci metti un cinese, non mostrera' lo stesso grado di attivita'. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Questa differenza di attivazione cerebrale influenzera' anche la nostra percezione dell'ambiente. Infatti, se prendi una foto di una persona al centro di una scena complessa e la mostri ad un americano e ad un cinese, l'americano tendera' a ricordare i dettagli della persona nella foto, mentre il cinese si ricordera' i dettagli della scena. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Facciamo un esempio concreto di come l'organizzazione neuronale puo' modificate i nostri comportamenti quotidiani. Uno studio in america ha messo a confronto il cervello di elettori liberali con quello di elettori conservatori. Hanno scoperto che i liberali hanno piu' materia grigia nella loro corteccia cingolata (questa e' l'area associata con l'empatia). Mentre i conservatori hanno l'amigdala piu' grossa (area associata con la paura). </p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">C'e' un'influenza reciproca fra organizzazione neuronale e l'ambiente che ci circonda. I primi anni della nostra esistenza sono fondamentali per forgiare la nostra personalita' ed il nostro carattere ma e' interessante anche vedere come le nostre societa' abbiano effetti cosi profondi sui vari membri che le compongono. </p>
