body | "

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcM6izgfuY7H4QiQQDnFA98gdLtM1zxNKTcTmvpj64ENc/image.png

First, we’ll consider some of the factors that make a ‘good’ cryptocurrency, then we’ll consider the forces that drive prices, and finally we’ll examine whether cryptocurrencies are the future. By the time we’ve finished, would-be crypto investors should at least know what to look out for.

What makes a good cryptocurrency?

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQbsWTmqzDionwmPYez8Pyw7NfMf4VTvXMQFf2cNGvmHv/image.png
This is a tricky question to answer for two reasons. First, nobody can predict the future, so even the most encouraging looking cryptocurrency might end up failing. Second, what makes a cryptocurrency good depends on what you want to do with it.

If you are looking to invest in a currency, then you will want a coin that will hold – and increase – its value. On the other hand, if you want to use the cryptocurrency, then you will need one that is widely accepted, or is at least accepted by the retailers you want to use.

That usability is an important factor. The more uses a currency has, the wider its potential base of users, and the wider its user base, the greater demand. Demand, as in all economics, is crucial for driving price.

You will also want to look for a currency that is easy to acquire, whether through mining or buying. For some established currencies, mining is now restricted to those with access to expensive equipment, but buying them is still straightforward. For other, newer, cryptocurrencies, mining is easy but there are fewer in circulation for buyers.

It is important to investigate the community around a cryptocurrency as well. The code that underlies cryptocurrencies sometimes needs to be updated to take account of new developments and close gaps in security. The larger and more active the community, the more likely it is that these changes will be dealt with promptly and effectively.

The size of the community will also affect how widely it is supported by vendors and how easy it will be to find information and get help if you need it.

You need to look for a combination of all these things to help determine a good cryptocurrency. It’s worth considering the example of investors who advocate a ‘portfolio’ approach, which means spreading your risk by investing in different assets, with a mix of risk profiles. For cryptocurrency investors, a portfolio makes sense. Other users might want to consider a portfolio approach in the sense of adopting different currencies for diverse needs.

Are cryptocurrencies the future?
There are plenty of people who believe that cryptocurrencies are the future and will replace traditional currencies, shifting power away from central banks and governments. If this is the future it’s still some way away, with no cryptocurrency having established itself as a clear favourite even among those who are experts in the field. Also regulators are taking a very cautious approach to determining how cryptocurrencies can be used. The decentralised nature of the internet is one of its strengths.

The network was designed so that the removal of one, or even several, nodes would not cripple the remainder. Cryptocurrency is designed to work in a comparable way. As the financial crash of 2008 revealed, significant financial disruption in one country, for example, the United States, can have a knock-on effect that harms economies around the world. As a decentralised, peer-to-peer tool, cryptocurrencies are intended to avoid that.

However, their ability to do so in practice is debatable. The volatility of Bitcoin prices and allegations that the price increases were the result of market manipulation show that without a central bank in charge, catastrophic events can still affect the entire network.

Even so, there is little doubt that a technological currency is a natural fit for the modern world. Most of our money exists virtually in any case, so the idea that a virtual currency could replace traditional money and allow us to spend the same currency anywhere in the world, doesn’t seem that far-fetched.

Cryptocurrencies are also always-on, so that trading doesn’t cease when, for example, Wall Street closes for the night. This, too, seems like a more natural fit for our internet-enabled world.

If cryptocurrencies are the future then it is possible that we have not yet seen the winner. Indeed, one possible scenario is that governments will simply launch their own cryptocurrencies and convert their citizens to those. Certain countries might choose to get together and share currencies, while others might settle for making it easy to trade between currencies. It’s possible that it won’t be governments that do this but retailers. We could see an Amazon Coin or an Apple Coin that becomes a currency used by customers of those businesses.

There will be obstacles, however. Scientists have warned that the power demands of blockchain-based technology are unsustainable, so an alternative verification method might be needed if cryptocurrencies are to become truly global. Secondly, we’ve seen recently that networks can be compromised by attackers gaining control of more than 50 per cent of the network – something that was once thought unlikely. A currency with this kind of vulnerability clearly poses greater risks than traditional currencies, so this is a hole that will need to be closed before mass adoption is possible.

Finally, cryptocurrencies are still not trusted by many technology experts, so getting them beyond the tech world and persuading the average person to use them in place of traditional currency is clearly a long way from happening. There’s a very significant education exercise to be done before cryptocurrencies become mainstream.
https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdovGfNTEkWg8cq1jAzRbRe5vke8dU4xHoz9yRagAd3Kb/image.png
" |

body | "

Ethereum’s value rose by around 3,600 per cent in 2017 and is expected to keep growing. However, like all cryptocurrencies it has been highly volatile and there are occasional sharp drops in value. It makes sense to keep an eye on the value for a while before buying your first Ether (ETH). The value of a single Ether was several hundred dollars in early 2018 but you do not have to buy a whole coin. It is possible to buy fractions of a cryptocurrency token.

Ethereum Classic v Ethereum
https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmUkvzVvn4f5KCtiBH87gaNztHEYjbHDabSmWSTaN16YxQ/image.png
The split between Ethereum Classic and Ethereum is one that goes to the very heart of the philosophy underpinning the blockchain. The idea behind the blockchain is that transactions, once made, cannot be undone by anyone. The split between two factions of Ethereum users hinged on a disagreement with that concept.

Ethereum was designed as a platform for decentralised applications (DApps), something that was not supported by Bitcoin. DApps can be anything from games to identity management systems – the key is that they are decentralised.

In 2016, as part of a plan to support DApps, the Distributed Autonomous Organisation (DAO) was created. This was a set of smart contracts intended to create a kind of venture capital fund to support DApps. Four weeks after the launch, the DAO had accumulated $150M in ETH. However, the plan went wrong when someone exploited a loophole to withdraw $50M in ETH from the fund.

What happened next is crucial. The community voted for a ‘hard fork’ of the Ethereum platform, that would effectively devalue the $50M ETH taken by the hacker to the point of worthlessness. The community would move to the new chain, be given the equivalent amount of ETH to match what they had lost and the hacker would be left on the old chain with their funds now worthless. The fork went ahead in July 2016.

The problem is that those who see the blockchain as inviolable felt that this measure was wrong. Even though the fork was the result of the vote, those who oppose it argue that the community should not be able to alter the blockchain just because they disagree with something that has happened. On the other side, those supporting the fork argue that the community should have the right to make these decisions democratically.

Those who objected to the fork remained behind and retitled their blockchain ‘Ethereum Classic’, while the new fork continues to be known as ‘Ethereum’.

In terms of choosing between the two currencies, Ethereum has outperformed Classic since the split. This makes sense, given that Classic will not be compatible with any future upgrades and Classic has not developed at the same pace as Ethereum. That said, those who subscribe to the ethics that led to the creation of Classic might well prefer to stay with that currency.

Ethereum Metropolis

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmSmf27ZAmtB1A7KKXi9oUvkGAxGKcTno7p7dPwGNBHLYo/image.png

The first prototype of Ethereum, Olympic, was released in May 2015 and followed two months later by Version 1 – Frontier. In March 2016, Version 2, Homestead, followed, which was the final version before the split between Ethereum and Classic. Metropolis was the first version after the split. Metropolis Part 1: Byzantium, was released in October 2017 and is Version 3. Version 3.5 is known as Metropolis Part 2: Constantinople but has not yet been released.

At the time of writing, Metropolis Part 1 is the current version of Ethereum. It introduced several measures to increase flexibility for smart contract developers, most notably by introducing something called ‘zk-SNARKS’, an acronym for Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge. Before we get to what that means, let’s briefly consider smart contracts.

A smart contract is like any other contract in which two or more parties agree to do something under certain terms. For example, Alice will paint Bob’s house and Bob will pay Alice once the job is complete. A smart contract is a kind of escrow system – Bob would put Alice’s money into the contract and Alice would automatically be paid when the terms of the contract are satisfied. At scale – imagine Bob has lots of contractors working on lots of houses – this means payments are managed automatically, without Bob needing to handle the admin.

What zk-SNARKS brings to the system is the ability to verify a contract in a ‘zero-knowledge’ environment. Imagine that Bob hires Alice to perform confidential work. Zk-Snarks could verify that the work has been carried out without revealing the confidential steps that might be useful to Bob’s competitors.

Ethereum Casper

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcGw6E65BHADv4eVTFtQX6y3bsaZVjcnc1KfioyoBKmfC/image.png

Blockchain systems are designed to be decentralised, which means that there is no central authority to verify that a transaction has been made, or that the same coins have not been spent more than once. That verification still needs to happen, so blockchain technology gives the task to the network.

In a proof of work system, nodes on the network compete to be the first to provide a cryptographic hash – a kind of digital fingerprint – that verifies all the transactions in a block. The winner is rewarded with new coins – a process known as ‘mining’. The downside of this is that it wastes a lot of energy – every miner is working to solve the same problem and all but one have wasted the computing power used to do so.

Also, the verification process gets harder over time, requiring more computing power and effectively putting mining in the hands of a small number of groups, or pools of groups, that can afford the hardware. The risk is that this recreates the centralisation that blockchains are designed to avoid

Under a ‘proof of stake’ system, miners are replaced by ‘validators’. Each validator gives up some of their ETH as a stake and then effectively places a bet on a group of transactions that can be added to the blockchain. If that block is added to the chain, then you get a reward proportional to your stake. Validators that try to submit false chains will lose their stake.

This should be cheaper for everyone and remove the need to have the fastest computing equipment. It should also make Ethereum faster and more scalable.

Ethereum Solidity

Unlike the other two terms, ‘Solidity’ does not refer to a version of the blockchain or an algorithm used within it. Solidity is the computer programming language used for writing smart contracts. Though it isn’t the only language used on Ethereum, it is currently the most common one. It was proposed for Ethereum by Gavin Wood, Ethereum’s former chief technology officer, in August 2014.

Solidity was designed with a syntax similar to that of JavaScript, which is widely used by web developers, and C. The intention was that this familiarity would make it easier to take up. That doesn’t mean Solidity is easy for novices – some experience in programming and some knowledge of Ethereum and how it works would be useful for anyone getting started.

How to buy Ethereum

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXPnmxGAuTYbHzpiGakFz7aA4ex4SLutsk7HLdzUMyY2k/image.png

To buy ETH you will need an account with an exchange or cryptocurrency broker, such as Coinbase or Kraken. These vary in the service they offer, but most will require you to submit your personal details and then connect your traditional bank account. Some will require you to verify your identity with appropriate documentation, just as a stockbroker or bank would.

Once you have an account you will be able to buy ETH. Digital currency, being virtual, must be stored somewhere and your wallet is the place to do this. Some exchanges will offer a wallet as part of their service. Others will require you to use a third party. Your wallet holds the private key that allows you to access your ETH and which you will use to ‘sign’ your transactions. It will also make it possible for you to move between marketplaces or other wallets.

Cryptocurrency transactions are not reversible. If you accidentally transfer coins to the wrong place or if your coins are stolen, then you will not be able to get them back. Security is vital.

There are software and hardware wallets for storing cryptocurrencies. The former are apps that store your information or that connect you to virtual services where your ETH are stored. These are easy to use but less secure. Some online services have been targeted by hackers and people have lost their coins.

Hardware wallets are usually memory stick-like devices that store your private key information. They are more secure than software wallets because they can be disconnected from the internet.

Wallets can also be encrypted with password protection and backed-up, protecting you from a computer failure or human error. Both steps are important measures to take to protect your ETH.

ETH can be spent on a range of online goods and services, but it is worth keeping in mind that if you want to change it back into local currency at any point, this can be difficult in some parts of the world. If this is likely to be an issue for you then you should check local regulations before you buy.

" |

body | "
https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQtbAGNyPGeecC8K2D3hemFHLEfK1SxtSqS9FATis4EXG/image.png
A virtual world based on blockchain technology and financed by an ICO is selling ‘plots of land’ for up to $200,000.

Genesis City, which was launched by Decantraland following an ICO last year, uses distributed ledger technology (DLT) to record the transactions in virtual land. In a recent report, Bloomberg said that Ripio.com, the credit network, paid almost $150,000 for prime ‘real estate’ in the virtual world, next to the main square where visitors first enter

Decantraland plans to expand Genesis City to give visitors the option to “go to a casino, watch live music, attend a workshop, shop with friends, start a business” and more. The company, started by two coders from Argentina, was funded through an ICO that made $26 million in around 30 seconds last year.

The new ‘Second Life’

An auction of plots raised another $28 million for the virtual city, which runs on the Ethereum blockchain. The founders say that the plan is to build a platform that consumers can access once virtual reality achieves mass adoption.

The project is reminiscent of ‘Second Life’, the virtual world that received lots of media attention in the mid-2000s. Though the service has less mainstream attention these days, it was claimed in 2017 that it still has 600,000 active users. Plots of virtual space in ‘Second Life’ currently sell for around $600.

A Washington DC-sized city

Genesis City has some way to go before it is as busy even as Second Life. The developers plan to build the city out over the next few months to be roughly the size of Washington DC – there are a fixed number of plots: 90,000. Meanwhile, the early adopters can be expected to begin experimenting with what the service is capable of. The economy of Genesis City and Decantraland is based on its cryptocurrency, Mana tokens. These were worth two cents each at launch and currently are at around 12 cents each.

" |

body | "

Getting started in cryptocurrency trading can be a complicated process and there’s a lot to learn. We can’t teach you everything in one article, but we can at least point out five of the most common newbie mistakes that trade.io’s experts come across. Avoid these and you’re already on your way to success.

https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWoYdVqba4sG9hTwbVnFJdV4rrXBwD6SjQnGPWEnCQjdT/image.png

Mistake 1: Having no clue what cryptos are. There’s no shortage of stories about people who became overnight millionaires with a Bitcoin investment, and that’s attracted plenty of people who think they can do the same. Some of them can but only if they know what they’re doing. If you don’t have any cryptocurrency trading experience then you’ve come to the right place. Do your research before you get started and you’ll make better decisions.

Mistake 2: Not having a trading or investment plan. You’ve spotted a coin that’s increased its price by 20 per cent in a day, so do you buy? Of course you do, right? Well, probably not. You’ve missed the initial upward move in price and there’s a good chance that the coin has already run out of momentum. Seeing a coin surge in price is not a good enough reason to buy. Instead, make a plan for when to buy or sell, how much to spend and when to stop. Sticking with your plan will eliminate silly mistakes and help you improve your trading skills.

Mistake 3: Investing more than you can afford to lose. There is no guarantee that investments of any kind will increase in value, but cryptocurrencies are especially volatile. You can win big but you can lose big too. It’s easy to lose money and then spend more to make that back, only to lose that too. This is the mistake that gambler’s end up making. The smart way to invest – or, indeed, to gamble – is to decide how much you can afford to lose and not spend any more than that. If the worst happens and your investment is wiped out, then at least you’ll still be able to pay your bills. Of course, being wiped out is easier to avoid if you have a plan (see above).

Mistake 4: Thinking every coin is the next Bitcoin. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who invested in Bitcoin years ago and made a load of cash. Everyone wishes they could have had that foresight, but the ones who really profited are those who thought long-term. The short-termists who bought Bitcoin will have cashed out too early. You need to think longterm too. Don’t expect every new coin to be the next Bitcoin. Instead, do your research, diversify your portfolio, don’t put everything into one coin and then be patient.

Mistake 5: Being distracted by low prices. Some things are cheap for a reason. Some are cheap because people have missed out on the value. Do you know the difference? Probably not – especially if you’re just starting out. Lots of novice investors buy cheap coins expecting them to increase and thinking that owning lots of coins is intrinsically a good thing. Needless to say, it isn’t. If the investment is doomed then there is no benefit to having more coins. The most important thing to look for when evaluating a coin is market cap rather than price. Start from there and do your research.

" |
