A uniformed maid entered, almost running. They often got temporary maids when Betty had time off. Bara smiled and said hello. The maid remained expressionless and nodded a greeting in return. Beth handed over her coat.
“Bara, give Sonya your things.”
Sonya said nothing but stepped in her direction. Bara clutched at her bag.
“I can do that myself.”
“Nonsense!” Beth insisted.
“I need the bag. It has my homework.”
Beth instructed Sonya without actually looking at her.
“Hang up the coat and take the bag up to her room.”
Her word was final. Sonya took the bag and helped Bara ease out of her coat. She hung the coat on a stainless-steel rack that had replaced an antique wooden coat tree. It would have been silly to argue over such a small thing. The bag would end up in her room. And the coat? I’ll get it back first chance I get, Bara silently promised.
She waited for Sonya to leave and then asked, “Mom, what have you done to the house?”

Beth said nothing but went into the sitting room. Bara looked past a set of open French doors. Shocked, she followed her mother in. The sitting room like the foyer had been transformed. Gone was the overstuffed ease she’d grown up with, replaced with modern furniture, all sleek lines and shiny surfaces.
“Mom,” she asked again, “what have you done to the house?”
Beth continued to ignore her. She tossed aside a pile of mail, picked up a little silver bell, and rang it. In answer to the summons, silent Sonya—as Bara was coming to think of her—entered the room and stood beside her.
“Yes, madam?”
Sonya could talk after all.
“I’ll have tea in the conservatory in twenty minutes.”
Bara waited for Sonya to leave and then in that judgmental tone only a teenage girl will take when speaking to her mother demanded, “Conservatory? Since when do we have a conservatory? Really? Seriously Mom, what—have—you—done to the house?”

Beth let out a bothered sigh.
“Your father certainly doesn’t need an office here anymore, now does he? Really Bara, you’re making too much of this. The house was looking tired. It will be nice to live in something more modern. Your school friends will be very impressed. You should have them over more often. We don’t see enough of them. The house will match their youthful energy.”
“I liked the house the way it was.”
“You’ll get used to it.” Beth crossed to the bar. She brought her hand to her brow and, as though her diamond rings were ice to soothe an aching head, held her fingers there. Then she lowered her hand and took the lid off a silver ice bucket and dropped actual ice into a martini shaker. She poured a generous portion of gin from a blue glass bottle and waved the shaker in the air with vigor.

“You said you were thinking of changing a few things,” Bara complained. “Not the whole house. You should have asked my opinion?”
“I don’t need to run my decisions by my teenage daughter.”
“It’s my house too!”
Bara had to step suddenly aside. Something whizzed by her head, inches from contact. There was the sound of breaking glass. A martini glass had smashed against one of the French doors and now lay in shatters on the marble floor. It was amazing the door hadn’t broken too. Ice slid down its lead pane.
“I will do what I want to my own house!” Beth hollered. “You silly, stupid girl! Get out! Now! Leave me alone!”
Despite her real desire to do exactly that, Bara stood rooted, gripped by shock but also a sudden realization. She stared at the ruined martini glass and wondered at how she’d missed the obvious? Her mother had been drinking even before she’d come to get her. That was what her parents had been arguing about at the door, and that was why her mother wore so much perfume—to hide the smell of gin. She was drunk.
Bara looked now at Beth’s beautiful face bent in an ugly rage. Good sense took over. Her legs came to life. She fled the room, making it to the foot of the stairs before a pleading voice stopped her again.
“I’m so sorry,” Beth called. “Please, don’t go.”
What else could she do? It was her mother after all. Bara returned to the sitting room.

Teetering on her knees, Beth attempted to clean up the broken crystal. She looked up with her tear-filled eyes and held out a glass shard as though it were a peace-offering. There seemed a real danger of her passing out among the sharp edges. Bara went to her side, placed a hand on her arm, and helped her to stand. She guided her to the sofa and they both sat. Beth buried her face in her hands.
“I promised myself I’d never be this way with you,” she cried. “Never. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”
The answer to that question was obvious. Bara took a deep breath and ran full on in where angels feared to tread
“Maybe if you hadn’t been drinking you …”
Beth stiffened and looked up with an expression that stopped Bara in mid-sentence. She’d stopped crying very suddenly. When she spoke her tone was harsh and mocking. “No, I didn’t get your permission to redecorate. That doesn’t mean I’m an alcoholic. How dare you? You’re just like your father. You little …” She trailed off with a queer laugh, rose from the sofa, and was back at the bar. “Run along, dear. Let Mommy have some peace. I’ve a headache and it has your name all over it.”
With a crystal glass to her lips, Beth swallowed gin like a thirsty desert dweller. Bara watched her down the martini and felt as though sand was filling her own stomach, creating a heaviness that threatened to drop through to her feet, but there was nothing she could do for her mother, at least not now. She left the sitting room and headed upstairs.
