Je suis né dans les algorithme, j'en développe même depuis l'âge de 11 ans sur l'ordinateur familial grâce au livre "le C++ pour les nuls". J'aime les algorithmes, ils ont une place particulièrement importante dans ma vie. Dans la vôtre aussi. D'ailleurs, les algorithme existent depuis bien avant l'arrivée de l'informatique.

Sur les réseaux sociaux, les algorithmes fonctionnent de la même manière. A la différence près qu'ils ne sont pas là pour nous aider à avancer dans nos vies, mais pour enrichir les créateurs de ces algorithmes.
Un réseau social ne gagne pas de l'argent en vous proposant du contenu. Un réseau social gagne de l'argent en récupérant vos données personnelles, notamment les comportements que vous avez en ligne (Big Data) pour les vendre à d'autres sociétés et s'en servent également comme moyen de négociation pour vendre de l'espace publicitaire.

Pour y parvenir, leur principal objectif et de vous faire rester le plus longtemps possible sur leur plateforme. Car plus vous resterez, plus vous aurez de chances des publicités, plus les entreprises qui paient pour mettre ces pubs seront contentes, plus elles continueront de payer et plus le réseau social gagnera et développera de nouveaux algorithme toujours plus puissant pour faire vous rester longtemps.
Un contenu qui vous retient sur une plateforme ne représente pas nécessairement un contenu de grande valeur ajoutée; il est souvent conçu pour divertir. Par exemple, publier cet article sur Facebook serait inefficace, car il n'obtiendrait probablement pas la visibilité souhaitée. Les algorithmes de Facebook privilégient les contenus légers et interactifs qui favorisent un engagement rapide, tels que les vidéos virales ou les memes, plutôt que les articles de fond qui nécessitent une lecture attentive et réfléchie.

Pour qu'un réseau social gagne de l'argent, il faut qu'il distribue gratuitement et à forte dose de la dopamine.
Le problème, c'est que pour générer de la dopamine, il faut normalement du temps :
- On en génère en mangeant (temps estimé à environ 30 minutes le temps de préparer à manger).
- Après une activité physique moyenne à intense (temps estimé à environ 1h30).
- Après l'atteinte d'un gros objectif (cela dépend de l'objectif, mais ça peut aller d'1h à plusieurs mois).
- Durant une session de médiation (temps estimé à environ 30 minutes).
- Etc.
Tout ça représentent des activités longues. Mais les réseaux sociaux n'ont pas le temps. Ils doivent nous happer et nous piéger le plus longtemps sur leurs plateformes. Pour ça, ils développent des usines à dopamines pour nous en injecter à grosses doses :
- Like, notification, commentaire : chaque interaction positive déclenche une bouffée de dopamine, nous poussant à scroller encore et encore, à la recherche de la prochaine dose de satisfaction.
- Le suspens : les algorithmes distillent les contenus au compte-gouttes, nous laissant impatients de découvrir la suite.
- La nouveauté permanente : les notifications incessantes et les contenus toujours plus originaux maintiennent notre attention en éveil, à l'affût de la prochaine surprise.
Notre corps est toujours à la recherche de dopamine. Nous sommes accros à cette hormone et c'est normal. Nous en avons besoin pour atteindre des buts (manger, dormir, atteindre des objectifs, nous reproduire etc.). Mais notre cerveau cherche à en obtenir toujours plus et toujours plus rapidement. C'est humain.
- Il est plus facile de scroller que d'aller faire une séance de sport.
- Il est plus facile et rapide de regarder un porno que de trouver une personne avec qui partager un moment intime.
- Il est plus facile d'aller dans un fast food que de prendre du temps de préparer un bon repas.
Nous privilégions la satisfaction instantanée et avons de plus en plus de mal à nous fixer des objectifs sur le long terme car justement, les buts sont longs à atteindre et nous n'avons plus l'habitude.
Mais à forte dose, la dopamine est néfaste :
- Dépendance et comportements compulsifs : On vient de le voir, la dopamine joue un rôle clé dans les mécanismes de récompense et de plaisir du cerveau. Une exposition répétée à des activités qui augmentent significativement les niveaux de dopamine, comme l'utilisation de drogues, le jeu, et également, l'engagement excessif sur les réseaux sociaux, peut conduire à des comportements de dépendance. On peut donc développer un besoin compulsif de rechercher des stimulations qui augmentent la dopamine. Je fais partie de ces personnes, bien que je me "soigne", rien qu'en écrivant ces lignes, je suis allé deux fois sur des réseaux sociaux suite à une notification et je me suis fait happer par quelques vidéos.
- Altération de la régulation des humeurs : Des niveaux anormalement élevés de dopamine sur de longues périodes contribuent à des troubles de l'humeur. Par exemple, dans les troubles bipolaires, il a été prouvé que des niveaux élevés de dopamine peuvent être associés à des épisodes maniaques.
- Problèmes de décision : Une surstimulation des circuits dopaminergiques peut altérer le jugement et rendre les décisions plus impulsives. Cela peut réduire la capacité à évaluer les conséquences à long terme, favorisant des choix à gratification immédiate au détriment des bénéfices à long terme.
- Effets neurologiques : À long terme, des niveaux élevés de dopamine peuvent aussi contribuer à l'épuisement des cellules productrices de dopamine et influencer le développement de conditions neurodégénératives comme la maladie de Parkinson. Dans un article que j'ai lu récemment, on parle même d'une perte de matière grise.
