En la trama de nuestras vidas, a menudo nos encontramos atados a patrones de comportamiento que, aunque aparentemente inofensivos, se convierten en limitantes que dificultan nuestra transformación personal, impidiendo un avance positivo . Estos hábitos, moldeados a lo largo del tiempo, se integran tan profundamente en nuestro ser que su influencia se extiende a través de cada faceta de nuestra experiencia; desde las decisiones más triviales hasta las más ambiciosas. Este apego a patrones desgastados nos impide reconocer oportunidades, limita nuestra capacidad de adaptación y, con el tiempo, puede resultar en insatisfacción.
Un ejemplo particularmente latente de estos patrones limitantes es la resistencia al cambio, especialmente cuando ese cambio es positivo. Esta resistencia surge porque los hábitos, una vez establecidos, se anidan profundamente en nuestro ser, persistiendo a lo largo de nuestra vida. Podemos vislumbrar las mejoras posibles, la renovación positiva de nosotros mismos, pero nos falta la voluntad de modificar la conducta inútil que nos paraliza, impidiendo que avancemos como un río que encuentra un nuevo cauce. La indecisión nos domina y sin que lo notemos, ese comportamiento sigue operando a pleno rendimiento, aunque solo se requieran pequeños ajustes.

Un ejemplo ilustrativo de esta resistencia al cambio es una experiencia personal compartida con un amigo. Me pidió que, como usuario experimentado del mundo virtual, le realizara una compra en Amazon. Inicialmente, mostró entusiasmo y me contactó para que le explicara el proceso de compra y la gestión del casillero internacional para cancelar los costes de envío. Le di instrucciones por teléfono, pero luego prefirió una reunión personal porque el proceso le parecía complejo. Cuando nos reunimos, repetí la explicación y aunque aparentemente comprendió, insistió en que yo hiciera la compra, era su primera vez y temía cometer errores. Así que realicé la compra sin problemas; el producto llegó en perfecto estado y mi amigo, muy contento con el resultado, manifestó su intención de realizar más compras online. Sin embargo, en las ocasiones posteriores, mi amigo nunca realizó una compra por sí mismo, ni contactó con el casillero internacional. Prefirió depender en absoluto de mí, amparándose en nuestra amistad y en mi conocimiento del proceso.
Esta pequeña anécdota pone de manifiesto la resistencia al cambio y la dependencia como comportamientos inútiles. Una tarea tan sencilla como una compra online, que representa un pequeño cambio hacia la autonomía en un entorno digital, se convirtió en una tarea demasiada complicada para él. La consecuencia fue su perpetuación en un estado de inacción y dependencia, delegando una tarea simple y evitando el esfuerzo de aprender y adaptarse a una nueva tecnología. La comodidad que sintió, justificada por los lazos de amistad, resultó en una limitación duradera para gestionar sus propias necesidades. Aunque solo fueran unos pocos clics, era como si le diera miedo el propio proceso de aprender. Y es que, a veces, esa resistencia al cambio no es solo pereza, sino una forma de evitar otras sensaciones; quizá miedo al fracaso, inseguridad o incluso un temor a la autonomía que no admite tan fácilmente.

Otro comportamiento inútil que también se cuela en nuestras vidas, y que aparece cuando menos lo esperamos, es la impulsividad. Esa reacción exagerada, esa explosión emocional que te roba la calma y te deja con la sensación de haber perdido algo valioso, tiene la capacidad de arruinar momentos especiales y de evidenciar una falta de control emocional y mental. A veces, se desencadena incluso por situaciones triviales, pero es manejable.
Una vez fui a casa de una amiga para intercambiar anécdotas. Lo estábamos pasando bien hasta que vimos, dentro de su casa, un charco de agua formándose en una superficie con revestimiento de cemento. Inocentemente le pregunté si era normal, teniendo en cuenta la molestia para quienes transitaran por el lugar. Noté en ella cierta inquietud; me aseguró que le avisaría a su madre y enseguida lo hizo. Mientras permanecía sentado, escuché fuertes gritos provenientes del interior de su casa. Reconocí que se trataba de la voz de su padre. Sentí una punzada de incomodidad, de esa que te encoge el estómago, sin saber con exactitud qué pasaba.
Mi amiga salió pálida: "¿Escuchaste a mi papá?", pregunto. Le respondí que sí, era innegable. Me explicó que su padre había explotado de rabia al enterarse del charco .En su furia, rompió la válvula del agua; irritada por la negligencia de quienes la dejaban abierta y olvidaban cerrarla. Improvisó una reparación rudimentaria con un trozo de madera y goma. Sentenció que nadie más la tocaría. Días después, mi amiga me contó que su padre tuvo que comprar una nueva válvula, pues en su enojo había olvidado que la usaba para lavar el auto. El gasto innecesario y la desagradable experiencia familiar se hubieran evitado si él hubiera sido consciente de su forma de expresarse (aunque le resulte difícil) y hubiera buscado una reacción más adecuada.

Los comportamientos inútiles, aunque puedan causar daños no intencionales, a menudo pasan desapercibidos, robando pequeños fragmentos de nuestra energía y tiempo. No se trata de grandes errores, sino de un flujo incesante de ineficacia que, con el tiempo, puede desgastarnos. Si carecemos de autocontrol emocional, es más probable que caigamos en estos comportamientos inútiles como una forma de evadirnos y auto-sabotearnos. Las circunstancias nos mostrarán la verdadera fortaleza de nuestro carácter y sabiduría; es decir, nuestra capacidad de identificar y modificar estos pequeños hábitos que, al acumularse, nos impiden visualizar nuestro potencial. Debemos ser capaces de aprovechar las circunstancias para construir la disciplina que nos permita mantener el equilibrio y abrirnos a nuevas oportunidades, sin perder nuestra serenidad interior, liberándonos de patrones negativos.
